My first reaction to the thought of a long period of time on a cruise ship...especially as I have never even spent a short time on one...was no thank you.
But on thinking about it, well maybe. At the moment home circumstances would prevent it, but in the future I wonder.
A whole year? Would I fall out with other passengers? Would I feel completely claustrophobic? Or would once I was used to it enjoy a year of being kept warm, fed and watered? I could switch off from the world by not reading papers or watching the news. Exercised by walking the decks and swimming. Could read. Learn to paint. Learn a language. Make a new friend or 2. I would need a balcony and light.

Could you?

My cousin is CEO of one of the biggest and most exclusive travel businesses. About 10 years ago I asked him what their largest booking was.

A couple booked cruises which lasted a year and they had the best suite, their own butler, they were helicoptered on and off the ships and they had the best of everything. I can’t remember now what it cost but it was many hundreds of thousands.

Apparently they were both top surgeons and very wealthy. The husband suddenly became very ill, had life saving surgery and they vowed that when he was well enough they would take a whole year off together for him to recuperate fully. His wife knew that if they were at home he would not rest properly so she booked it all to guarantee they spent time together and didn’t have to lift a finger. I thought what a great idea if money is no object.

I've been using vessel finder to see where the Odyssey is going. Not very fast anyway! We left Dublin yesterday afternoon to sail to Cherbourg - arrived around midday today. Odyssey is still pottering along - not in Brest yet. I suppose cruise ships don't go as fast as ferries, but they're obviously not in a hurry!

The longer they stay out if ports the less it costs.

It's left Brest and now on it's way to Bilbao.

I expect the ship will go ashore at times, isn't that what cruises do? I don't know, but could be a way to see different places, Belfast seems to have been good to them. I think cats often lived on ships in the past, as mousers and they probably adapted fine. I think it seemed like they were all being positive, which is something I'd like in my future, but I'd rather be going home at some point too. It amazes me how people from the US are either avid travellers or have never had a passport. This lot would rather be anywhere else but the USA it seems.....
