Why is everybody referred to as “lovely” ?
You know the sort of thing, I suspect I am guilty of it too.
“My lovely cleaner, my lovely hairdresser, my lovely gardener etc?”
This from a post by our local WI FB group (place names redacted))
What a fabulous day out with our lovely WI ladies to The Kings Gallery and the Royal Mews - plus we were joined from a couple of lovely ladies from xxxxxxxxxx WI too
A superb day out with lots of lovely chats over tea and coffee getting to know one another a little better 😍 and two fabulous exhibitions that we all really enjoyed 🎉
Huge thanks to lovely xxxxx from xxxxxx Coaches for getting us there safely and huge thanks to all the lovely ladies on the trip

AIBU to find this all a bit saccharine and 🤮🤮🤮🤮

Not just lovely as an adjective but as a personal pronoun - people in shops seem to call me ‘lovely’ all the time eg “Thank you lovely.”

Here in Gloucestershire, you get called "my lovely".

Particularly by medical staff.

I don't like being addressed as 'lovely', it sounds patronising, 'this won't hurt, lovely..' particularly medical people.

Long time since I was called alluring. A very long time 😀

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:22:00

Thank you.
That's very alluring of you. wink

Farmor15 Sat 05-Oct-24 20:21:28

In Ireland - "grand" is often a reply to a question. Eg "how was your trip?"

AGAA4 Sat 05-Oct-24 20:20:22

I do try not to use lovely too much and remember words my mum used. A pleasant woman. A beautiful morning. The food was delicious. Lovely could have been used.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:19:19

Seeing as nobody seems to be suggesting alternatives, I've just googled, where it suggests, alluring, and a couple of others, and quickly moves onto gorgeous, stunning, and words that to me, are far more effusive than I'd use.

Not that I'd say I met an alluring woman, anyway.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:10:27

What would you use instead?

AGAA4 Sat 05-Oct-24 20:09:50

I don't mind lovely as long as it's not used too much. Better than fabulous or fantastic used a lot by celebrities.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:09:16

It is. smile

henetha Sat 05-Oct-24 20:06:31

At least lovely is a lovely word 😊

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:06:16

So, alternatives to lovely or nice?

AGAA4 Sat 05-Oct-24 20:03:30

I remember when lots of things were super.

RosiesMaw2 Sat 05-Oct-24 19:55:14

I seem to remember being told to vary my adjectives in English lessons 60+ years ago.

What would you use instead of nice, though?

Lovely?

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 19:40:18

What would you use instead of nice, though?

sodapop Sat 05-Oct-24 19:38:29

A step up from the ubiquitous ' nice' though.

Tuaim Sat 05-Oct-24 19:31:12

It drives me nuts when people keep answering with perfect. My hairdresser refers to everything as perfect! Agghhh!

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 19:14:13

Smashing should make a comeback, I think

Babs03 Sat 05-Oct-24 19:08:31

I think there are worse words to use, ‘amazing’ for instance. Whenever I talk to an estate agent on the phone these days - I have to because we are moving house- they almost always respond to everything I say with amazing. But I am just talking about viewings fir our house which isn’t that amazing when you think about it.

Wagwan, Gs,

It was proper lit today at the Womens Institute, as we had the G.O.A.T giving us chat, innit?

grandtanteJE65 Sat 05-Oct-24 19:00:36

There is a fashion in language as in everything else.

Remember our school-days (late 1960s) when everything was "fab"? Then "fantastic", "groovy" and more recently "awesome".

"Lovely" instead of "nice" will go the way of all the others. It is harder to predict what the new term will be.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 18:56:04

I use lovely a lot.

I expect I have a limited vocabulary, because I can't think of many other words, which are true, anyway.

I'd sound like a simp.

Rekarie Sat 05-Oct-24 18:49:48

escaped

Everything I type "lovely" on my phone, my finger slips and hits the "i" key, so my messages read:
"I had a lively time with a lively group of ladies doing lots of lively things."
The mind boggles! 😃

I have that as well!
