Getting body into fine hair

Just wondering what you are all using to get some body into fine hair apart from mousse? I don't want a perm and I am fed-up with using my heated curler each day and then using hairspray to keep the body in. Your suggestions would be most welcome!

I have had fine hair all my life- though it came back thicker for a while after the chemo, it didn't last long.

I don't use any products any more because none of them work. I just have a regular good cut.

It looks worse if I try products that just clump in patches.

I've learned to accept it is part of who I am!

Products can make the situation worse, unless used lightly. Have you tried drying it with your head upside down and then styling? Mine has got finer, I dry it naturally and then style with a barrel hot brush.

I use much less conditioner now as it makes my hair limp. I just use it sparingly and rinse off quickly. It is fuller without conditioner weighing it down.

I use Bedhead 'Queen for a Day' before blow drying. It's nice and light spray and smells nice, one can lasts for ages. If I don't use that and don't blow dry, then my hair always seems a bit wispy and flat. If I want it to stay put and I'm going somewhere 'nice' I also floof it up and then drown it in Elnett hairspray.

Plantur 39 Phyto Caffeine Tonic 200ml
This has been advertised on TV. It's not a shampoo. I think you just massage it into your hair daily. I haven't tried it yet.

I haven’t tried it myself, but the Color Wow range gets good reports - fairly expensive though.

I shall be following this one with interest. My hair was fine and flyaway anyway - and I swear it's got even worse in the last couple of years or so. Don't think that's particularly a colour issue. For 2-3 years 2020 onwards I was having it noticeably coloured - but the last year or so I've let it go back to it's own natural colour (as I don't like using chemicals if I can help it) and found it's now totally white.

So - looking for non-chemical ideas to help out - and haven't used hairspray for years (as I've never been able to figure out how not to breath it in as I sprayed it around).

Moroccan oil texture spray is good for fine hair. Spray on nearly dry hair, makes hair look and feel thicker. It’s quite expensive but a little goes a long way.

When I had a restyle my hairdresser told me to avoid any type of hair mousse as they just weigh the hair down. Instead, I use Wella styling spray lightly spritzed onto towel - dried hair, dry with the hairdryer with my head down for a few minutes and then brush into chosen style whilst finishing the drying process - it works for me. She also recommended to only condition part way up the hair and to avoid the scalp area - easily achieved in the shower by bending your head forward and working on the hair, not the head. Hope all that makes sense GNetters. smile

Thanks Astitchintime. I may give the Wella spray a go!

Years ago I was told to apply a very small amount of conditioner- just one stroke of the hand lightly on the ends.

I was also told to wash my hair backwards- with my face uppermost as they do in the hair dresser. Just stroke the shampoo in and rinse, don't agitate the scalp. This prevents tangles.

Other things I learned is that shampoos are washed away-they leave no residue on the hair so can't make it thicker. Better to use cheap shampoo but expensive conditioner (just not much of it!) on the ends.

The other thing I'll say again that a good cut is worth more than all these products. I pay far more for a good hair cutter than most people. My hair is just a classic bob with a light fringe- the only thing that works for me.

Bedhead products are all good.
Also Avon Advance Technique refresher (dry shampoo) I use this on the next day after shampooing spray under the hair near the roots, wait a few mins then massage in and brush it gives instantly thicker hair.

I use John Freida Profiller shampoo and conditioner. It is fairly expensive but there are often 3 for 2 deals on it. I also use Bedhead Small Talk before I dry it

What I have found makes a big difference is having highlights put in which seem to make my hair thicker.

I like Neil's yard geranium shampoo. It makes my hair look really good.

I have fine hair, always had a short style, but the last few years I am finding not washing daily and no products and leaving it dry naturally has made it behave and stay in the the style I have brushed it into.. I just damp it in the shower and comb it into my style then a quick brush when it is dry . I know it is hard to stop using products I kept buying different one's to try and get it to stay in a style and actually I didn't need anything. Also stopped colouring during lockdown and at 66 I can only see the odd grey hair.

My hair is so fine, mousse etc doesn’t do much to hold a style, it soon falls limp. Also if I grow my hair theirs no body in it and looks like rat tails! For me I do get my hair highlighted, best a full head it helps.

I find Hair Fix (QVC or Bay) is good. It is a lightweight gel that you can apply to your scalp after drying, while ruffling your hair, using your fingertips. It gives some lift and volume.

I have found the Color Wow Xtra large Bombshell has transformed my hair. Just a small amount applied to the roots makes a difference. Then blow dry, lifting the roots with a brush. It's not sticky and although it's quite expensive, a little goes a long way and it lasts ages. You can buy a small 50ml bottle to test it out before investing in a larger one.

The wow range whilst expensive is brilliant for fine hair

Changing shampoo and conditioner are a game changer.

Never purchase shampoo and conditioner at a supermarket.

Go to the hair salons and get:

1) Kérastase for your type of hair

2) Blokera Salerm Bio Kera Organic

Their shampoos and conditioners as stated are a game changer for the condiiton of one´s hair ..

DO NOT USE HAIR SPRAY. It is highly toxic ..

Use a "serum" after finish by the above named producers.

I use much less conditioner now as it makes my hair limp. I just use it sparingly and rinse off quickly. It is fuller without conditioner weighing it down.

My hair used to be lovely and thick, though fine. Sadly I have a lot less hair now and find it has more body if I don't use conditioner, just a fairly rich shampoo. If it is difficult to get a comb though my hair I use a very little of one of the "leave in" conditioners, keeping it well away from my fringe.
I think that colouring your hair can give it more body, as it effectively "roughs up" the outside of the hair shaft to let the colour in, making it less silky and flat.

If you have very ultra fine hair, take "BIOTIN Vitamin H" Daily by Solgar or El Granero.

It is available worldwide at Health food shops ..

Have tried so many different products over the years recommended by hairdressers, friends. websites but none of them has made much improvement. Have recently started using Champo shampoo and conditioner and it's as good as any I've come across but pricey.

For occasional use this it’s ASP Wonder Dust, It gives loads of volume and you only need a tiny amount so lasts for ages.

I hope that nobody listens to what you claim Re not washing the scalp.
I went to see this woman, probably the leading Trichologist in the country.
What you’re claiming is rubbish. The scalp has to be kept clean to allow the follicle to grow. The scalp produces oil and sweat and let’s not forget dirt
Your advice to use cheap shampoo is also misleading. Cheap shampoos can contain nasty chemicals which can break fragile hair.
