Getting body into fine hair

Just wondering what you are all using to get some body into fine hair apart from mousse? I don't want a perm and I am fed-up with using my heated curler each day and then using hairspray to keep the body in. Your suggestions would be most welcome!

If you have very ultra fine hair, take "BIOTIN Vitamin H" Daily by Solgar or El Granero.

It is available worldwide at Health food shops ..

I'll have to check that out - given I'm only looking at more "natural" products.

Has anyone tried a rice water shampoo bar? I've been tidying through cosmetic products and found one I bought months back and not tried it yet (courtesy of a recommendation from someone that whichever-nation-it-s do this on their hair and it stays really thick). Must get my act together and try it.

Another thing I've found in my stocks is liquid Castile soap - has anyone used that either?

I use VO5 thickening powder, just a little sprinkled in then rubbed through hair with fingers.

My hair used to be very thick. It’s now so thin my scalp is visible through it- not quite male pattern baldness but nearly! The only thing that helps is not washing it for ten days or so. I wet it in the shower, dry it then apply very very little Tressame cream lightly with my head upside down until all absorbed then comb into shape!

I never said don't wash your scalp. If you're in the shower or not, just washing your hair means your scalp gets washed. People with thick hair need to scour the scalp because there is more of a barrier, with fine hair the scalp is much more exposed.
I know that shampoos and conditioners have been put through lots of testing- this theory was confirmed in a recent study on the BBC Sliced Bread podcast.
Shampoo is washed away, those harsh chemicals will only linger if you don't rinse properly. They won't break the hair- bad washing technique will break the hair when it is wet and vulnerable.
Conditioners are designed to remain on the hair after rinsing, but you need only very small amounts.
It is not my intention to mislead anyone. I'm only sharing what I learned as OP asked for, as someone who has had fine hair all her life, and that's a long time.

I’m using rice water solid shampoo and conditioner. I can’t say that I’ve noticed any difference to my fine hair, but hope I’m doing my bit towards saving the planet!

My hair is short and very fine. I use a blow dry spray, not mousse when drying hair. Then the best for extra volume is dry shampoo. I use Batiste many others available. Spray it on clumps of roots then just ruffle my hair into shape. Light spray with hairspray to keep in shape.

I found volumiser shampoo worked quite well.

I had terribly thinned hair due to illness a few months ago I needed an operation for (to be clear, thankfully not cancer hair loss, just ill health). I had always had good thick hair and I was bereft about my hair issues on top of health problems. I even put off having haircut appointments due to embarrassment to the hairdresser I have been to for about 25 years. In the end, I just needed a haircut. My hairdresser was the person who helped me restore my hair. So if you have a good hairdresser, I'd encourage you to make an appointment and speak to them.

Does anyone remember Avon hair thickening after-shampoo lotion/conditioner? A friend of mine used to buy several bottles at once..I tried it and it did a good job. This was back in the 90s. Perhaps there's an Avon rep on here who could ask Avon?

Have tried so many different products over the years recommended by hairdressers, friends. websites but none of them has made much improvement. Have recently started using Champo shampoo and conditioner and it's as good as any I've come across but pricey.

My mum is also using Champo as her hair looks a lot thinner these days. She is using the one to help thicken her hair, plus the matching conditioner. It makes a noticeable difference to how her hair looks - definitely looks thicker. It is expensive, but like other premium products a little bit does go a long way. Also, I think it’s only available to buy online.

I use hair thickening shampoo with collagen and biotin. It comes in a large bright purple bottle. I then condition with Aussie volume conditioner. I buy both in either Superdrug or Tesco. They have made a huge difference to my hair.

The make of the purple bottle shampoo is OGX.

What is the make of the shampoo please? Re the ingredients too - I've just chucked out all the ones I had in that had sodium laurel sulphate as one of the ingredients (as I gather it physically damages hair) - so are the ingredients of it okay?

Lisaangel10 Thu 17-Oct-24 14:34:20

Here it is by OGX.

Sulphate free surfactants.

I use Urban Fudge Seasalt Spray (bright orange bottle, available in Sainsbury’s) on my fine, collar length, cut straight across bob, and I think it has made a noticeable improvement!
