Opinions needed about first date

Quite a mix of views, I think it's a little odd for a younger couple to do

Obviously the young man has to have his dog's approval of the new girlfriend.

Is this canine a service dog ?!
Much as I love dogs and have had many rescue ones -I do find this request a bit strange !
Maybe he's had dog hating past girlfriends .
I do recall trying to suppress my amusement when a friend , who can't stand any animals told me that the first time she went to bed with a guy-his dog climbed in a licked her face throughout the entire romantic encounter .
The dog in question was a huge hairy mountain dog of Bernese origin !
I still laugh about it .
The guy was history .

Perhaps he is nervous and needs an ice breaker if conversation dries up, I do find it strange though. Dd should be cautious about this person or perhaps the dog is a trained helper dog

Just a meet up or drink but not a pub or restaurant meal with a dog in tow. Sounds like a man who has a dog and it’s the centre of his life. I’m sitting on the fence about this one glad it’s not up to me to decide.

Depends what sort of ‘somewhere’ has been chosen for the meeting. If a walk, no problem. If a meal out, yes very odd.

Wouldn't do for me but just as well we're all different. If your daughter has reservations she should heed her vibes.

Things have changed. When I was a teenager, people would be so excited about a first date with someone they fancied the last thing on their minds would be whether or not they could bring the dog!

It seems relatively harmless to me. Hopefully it will go well.

We can worry but the only thing you can say is to advise her to get you or a friend to phone partway through so she has an excuse to leave if she wants to.

It's a cliché but it should work!

I wouldn't be happy if it was a dangerous breed however.

I’m not surprised at this at all.
Dog owners these days seem to think they are entitled to take them everywhere.
There have been several discussions on here about how difficult it is to find a cafe or even a restaurant which is dog free for those of us who would prefer that.

We were in a large out of town John Lewis recently, trying to listen to an assistant in the electrical department, and were struggling to do so as there was a blasted dog near us barking away with the owner seemingly oblivious as usual.

In the case here my guess is the chap wants to see what his dog ‘thinks’ of the potential girlfriend.

I think the breed might be an indication of what type of man he is.

Well if it was a test to see if the dog liked the date that would be a massive red flag to me. The first date would be the last.

I don't think it is odd at all, the dog is part of his life and it is a deal breaker if dog and new potential partner do not get along, better to find out right from the start
