Just been to see the Tina Turner musical. It was very good, dancing in the aisles, cheers, claps and the person playing Tina had a great voice, too. Plus the nut bush dance ( I think only in Australia ?) in the aisles, too. Best musical I have seen in years. Any other good ones?

The first musical I ever saw was My Fair Lady, almost 60 years ago, absolutely amazing. More recently, I loved Blood Brothers ( my DiL sobbed!) and Jersey Boys.
I enjoyed Six but dozed off during Wicked...

Dozed off? I spent most of it wondering how much longer there was going to be a deafening assault on my eardrums... 😮😂

I love all musicals and have been lucky enough to see a lot. My top five are Les Mis, We Will Rock You, Cabaret, Carousel , Joseph and his amazing technicour dreamcoat. There are some recent ones which I haven't seen but would love to.

I have never seen a professional musical, only local amateur productions. However, I do love them! In December the local students are doing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. I'll be sure to get tickets.
Last year they did Something Rotten, and they did a great job.

I prefer the older musicals-I don't know why .
I think that they had more style or maybe I'm just nostalgic .

Casdon Thu 31-Oct-24 19:13:10

The Lion King is probably my favourite, but I also enjoyed
Billy Elliot
We Will Rock You
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
I’m not so keen on the Lloyd Webber musicals, and I don’t like anything too deep when I’m out for the night, although I did enjoy Phantom of the Opera.

Grandyma Thu 31-Oct-24 19:41:57

Fiddler on the Roof - many years ago - the original with Topol as Tevye the milkman. Wonderful!!

BlueBelle Thu 31-Oct-24 19:59:47

Rosie I hated Starlight express and my very worst is Cats loathed it …. funny how different we all are

I loved Blood brothers my favourite and the LionKing, Phantom of the opera and Les Mis and Joseph I haven’t seen many others but realise I seem to like the dark sad deep ones more than the lighthearted ones and the older ones too I d like to see MissSaigon and War Horse ( I saw the film )

So many good ones but I tend to like Juke Box musicals whether or not it's music I'd normally listen to. Beautiful (Carol King), Sunny Afternoon (The Kinks), Jersey Boys. Tina Turner, Dream Girls, Mowtown, Drifter Girl (Great music, weak story), Hairspray, pure joy. Book of Mormon, hilarious. Lion King, the costumes were stunning. I'm sure there's more I can't remember. There's been some that have been a waste of money, Wicked, Les Miserables, all the Lloyd -Webbers are the ones that stick in my mind, I didn't care for them at all.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 31-Oct-24 20:58:41

The only ones I’ve enjoyed have been: Cabaret, Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Book of Mormon.

My aunt took me to see My Fair Lady about 65 years ago and I loved it. Hair in 1970 was a highlight. We used to go to a Greek restaurant in Charlotte Street and a lot of the Hair cast would come in after the show - it always made for a good evening.

I saw Cats when it was first on tour and loved it. The King And I and Guys And Dolls are always worth seeing. Musicals I haven't enjoyed include Wicked which just seemed pointless and boring, and And Juliette which seemed very well put together, but I didn't recognise or enjoy any of the music.

Oh how could I have forgotten Dirty Dancing, has to go to the top of the list. Went to see it in the west end with a dear friend of mine since departed, they played 'I've had the time of my life' at her funeral. We watched it first at the cinema.

gentleshores Thu 31-Oct-24 22:07:34

I'm not one for musicals. The only one I've seen live was "Return to the Forbidden Planet" years ago - a sort of space age rock version of "The Tempest". Although if the Rocky Horror Show counts as a musical then I've seen that too :-)

However I do love Brigadoon (film) - especially the songs. Yes it's a bit cheesy but it mesmerized me as a child and have loved it ever since. I'd watch it every Christmas if someone would watch it with me!

Allira Thu 31-Oct-24 22:21:43

I remember going on a trip with Youth Club to see South Pacific in Todd-AO and thinking it was the best film I'd ever seen! My friends and I learnt the words to all the songs!

I've seen it since in the theatre and I've seen many films and productions since then but that will always bring back memories.

Miss Saigon was good on stage but the actor playing the main part didn't quite ring quite true for me.
Les Miserables on stage was different but it's one that grows on you when seen more than once, theatre and cinema.

Allira Thu 31-Oct-24 22:24:12

and my very worst is Cats loathed it …. funny how different we all are
I've never seen it, Bluebelle, all those humans dressed up as cats with all that makeup? No thanks.

Kate1949 Thu 31-Oct-24 22:34:27

I hated Cats and Les Miserables.

Maggiemaybe Thu 31-Oct-24 22:43:14

I always reckon I’m not keen on musicals, but I’m obviously fibbing as I’ve enjoyed many mentioned on here - West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, Seven Brides, Blood Brothers, Jersey Boys, Cabaret, Oklahoma, Evita, Joseph, Miss Saigon, Les Mis, Billy Elliot and others.

I was surprised at how little I liked Phantom, and how much I detested Wicked.

Not many very modern ones appeal. We sometimes catch some of Elaine Paige’s show on Sundays (not for long before we beg Alexa to make it stop) and I can’t imagine paying to sit through some of her choices.

MiniMoon Thu 31-Oct-24 22:51:49

I went to see Wicked at the Sunderland Empire a couple of weeks ago.
I went with no preconceptions and loved every minute of it.
I enjoyed Mama Mia the musical and of course Les Miserables.

nanna8 Fri 01-Nov-24 06:39:47

The Rocky Horror Show was a good one, a few years ago now.

Greyduster Fri 01-Nov-24 07:00:01

I’ve seen a lot of live opera, but have never seen a live musical. I do, however, love all things Rogers and Hammerstein and the music from My Fair Lady.

Allsorts Fri 01-Nov-24 07:08:19

Cannot abide Les Miserables, Cats or Fidler on the Rood, loved Paint your Wagon, Singing in The Rain, West Side Story, South Pacific, Rocky Horror Show. Seven Brides, one if the best was seeing Michael Crawford in Phantom of the Opera. The list is endless

loopyloo Fri 01-Nov-24 07:14:03

It's some of the songs that are so amazing.
"He had it coming " from Chicago.
Bring him home,from les Mis.
And, the life I could have lived, from Sister Act.

Kate1949

I hated Cats and Les Miserables.

Me too, Kate. My brother will go to see LesMis at the drop of hat - I avoid like the plague.

I have mentioned that our PE teacher told us that our homework was to watch West Side Story at the cinema and then we had a few modern dance sessions. I loved it.

nanna8 Fri 01-Nov-24 07:30:22

I actually liked Cats, bit of a TS Eliot fan ,but my husband thought it was dire and actually fell asleep. Mind you he also did that in Phantom of the Opera until the chandelier dropped down with a crash !

BlueBelle Fri 01-Nov-24 08:05:30

Nanna8 I went with my daughter, granddaughter and her friend, I was willing myself to go to sleep, I was bored out of my head My friend (not a real animal cat fan) loved the musical
I don’t remember the granddaughter and friend saying much when we came out of the theatre
The difference when we went to see Lion King, the grandkids were absolutely buzzing.

I ve come to the conclusion I m not much of the more modern musical fan.

Visgir1 Fri 01-Nov-24 08:27:54

Have always loved Oliver, saw as a child and this was my introduction to Theatre and musicals.
I'm fortunate I have seen many at least 3 this year.
Recently saw Hello Dolly, Oliver (again) both I'm sure will be up for awards.

Can't stand anything by Lloyd - Webber, it's a No from me on overrated Wicked and Hamilton, and Barnum probably the worst ever.
