Does anyone still play bingo? Must admit I haven’t played for many years. I was speaking to a lady only yesterday who has been participating for over 30 years! Has 6 books on the go at once, being in her late 80s I was well impressed I think I’d struggle with two, practise makes perfect she told me with a wink!

We have quite a lot of bingo players around here.
I used to see them on my way home from work, and thought it was like a social event as much as the playing. smile

I supported a lady through my work, who wanted to go, and found it hard to keep up!
Plus,we kept getting told off for talking.

I hate bingo and any game which depends purely on luck. I am a scrabble addict and play the computer every day.

When my mother was alive her description of bingo along with wearing white shoes was common.

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 14:54:58

My mum had all sorts of descriptions for all sorts of things.

I used to go with a friend just for a laugh. It was around the time Prince William was a student and he was spotted playing with other students. Our bingo club was in a Uni city and we had loads of students playing.

I am sure it is good for the brain because it is very fast. I could only play one book at a time but my friend who went regularly could play 2 books of 5 cards each, so 10 cards. She could also be replying to messages on her phone at the same time!

Once I won £1200, another time £1,000 and my friend won £1,000. One week a young lad next to us won a brand new car and cash. His excitement was infectious.

Lots go here, but I ve never been I wouldn’t mind though could be a laugh

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 15:13:04

I hope prince William was made aware that it's common

I did not realise one could win so much money. I went once and had problems coping with one card but I was not interested which did not help.

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 15:15:23

I found it very strange how certain phrases are used to get the players doing little gestures, and dances, and moves.

You can win a lot more than that! It could be £60,000+ in the National Games. That’s where all branches of the same club from all over the country compete and you just get close and the caller shouts “Bradford, we have a winner”. It gets very exciting

Yes, the bingo ladies used to tell me it was the national.
I used to look forward to seeing them and finding out if they had won anything on my way home from work. smile

Bingo is not for me but to each their own. I go to a large active retirement group and about every 3 months we play bingo. This brings out the moaners who hate bingo but the group needs to cater for all tastes. I have a sister-in-law addicted to it.

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 15:34:11

I think there are people who are addicted, in fact, I know someone.

I think it's the sense of community as much as anything.

Fleurpepper Sun 10-Nov-24 15:34:24

No. We are hosting the village elderly for lunch on Thursday, as we do once a month. And that will be bingo afternoon- so will be helping with those who have poor sight or struggling with memory, etc. A joy to help them, but otherwise, no- can't think of anything more boring. But each to their own.

I love a game locally of bingo. It’s massive around here, not the nationally known ones but locally arranged. Don’t be fooled by those who go and play, it may not necessarily be a game guile but a quick brain certainly required.

I used to go with my daughter years ago. The first week we won £800. My daughter still goes but with her friend. A surprising amount of young people go. It's not just old folk.

The person I took had a learning disability, but she kept stretching over with her "dobber" and catching my card up, as well as her five or six

My mother used to say that only a certain kind of person used the word common to mean low class.

She also thought white shoes and bingo were class indicators.

Indigo8 Sun 10-Nov-24 15:58:36

My mother was terrifically snobbish.

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 16:49:24

Really?
I'd never have realised 😙

NannyJan53 Sun 10-Nov-24 17:00:55

The young ones go to Bongo Bingo. Which is a Bingo night with rave dancing intervals.

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 17:02:57

grin
Oh gawd!!

Still, it's harmless enough.

🤣. It’s called a dabber. In the East Midlands a dobber is a condom. 🤣
