Russia is prepared to launch a wave of cyber attacks on Britain that could “turn out the lights for millions”, a Cabinet minister will warn at a Nato conference on Monday.

Vladimir Putin is willing and capable of triggering a “destabilising and debilitating” electronic strike on the UK, Pat McFadden will say.

Russia is “exceptionally aggressive and reckless in the cyber realm” and wants to gain a “strategic advantage and degrade the states that support Ukraine”, Mr McFadden, who oversees policy on national security and state threats, will warn.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster will say there is an imminent risk of a Russian cyber attack on British infrastructure and businesses that could “shut down the power grids” and deal a hammer blow to the economy.

fgt2 what happens when more people sign the petition for a reelection than actually voted for this government? Where’s democracy then?

David49 Sun 24-Nov-24 09:50:37

Are there really nearly 400000 deluded people in the UK that believe a new GE is going to happen?

Tiley Sun 24-Nov-24 09:50:45

We are preparing. Larder full of dried/tinned goods, water etc. Torches, candles, matches etc. Stocked up on wood/coal.

David49 it’s supposed to be a wake up call and who thinks it will stop at 400000 signatures?

Blimey.
If nothing else it’s sending a message to Labour that many are restless.

Wyllow3 Sun 24-Nov-24 10:07:35

Seems to me this thread isn't about Putin at all, since its been deliberately segued into another opportunity for Labour/NATO bashing instead of a discussion on cyber warfare

NATO policy on Russia and the Ukraine was an all party supported move when it all started up - NATO on Tuesday

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 10:21:34

Keir Starmer has upped the stakes by allowing Ukraine to use Uk supplied weapons against Russia. This is the most recent miscalculation by a government which is clearly not up to the job.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 24-Nov-24 10:22:57

It is about Putin/cyber attacks for me Wyllow3. NHS malware attack could affect accessibility for treatment for my husband so it’s of paramount importance to me.

I was just accommodating the meandering of the thread, which often happens on threads as you must know.

Very fast moving.
Could the Russian bots be on it already? 🤣

Quite frankly cyber security is probably the only area which works well in the Uk. Stop scare mongering.

Nothing to do with title- huge numbers have been 'restless for 14 years before that, and since Brexit.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 24-Nov-24 10:29:01

Me ronib?
I’m just glad you’ve reassured me. Thank you.

Wyllow3 Sun 24-Nov-24 10:41:18

Putin is threatening all kinds of things including hints of nuclear as discussed at great length other thread!

NATO has supported recent moves by mainly by Biden and smaller from UK, France involved too

"The move was met with praise from European NATO leaders, who are some of the largest backers of Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron said the allowance was a "good decision", telling reporters at the G20 summit that Russia was responsible for the escalation."

Now I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing since I dont feel I know enough, but the moves were a response to increased aggression by Putin.

NATO has tough decisions ahead since us in the UK and NATO as a whole decided to stand up to Russia.

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 10:45:58

Wyllow3 NATO needs to rethink urgently. I don’t think Ukraine is worth World War 3. End of ….

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 24-Nov-24 10:47:55

It’s okay to have more than one thread on a topic Wyllow3. If posters aren’t keen to contribute it will wither on the vine.

Not disputing that, indeed I've just added to it.

This thread is a BOYOF. 🤣 2 threads in one!

keepingquiet I think Putin is the only world leader with a clear aim to protect Russia against NATO aggression. NATO has poked the bear long enough and we may now pay the price.
Have you heard of deranged girl friend theory? It fits the bill perfectly.

I think we gifted him with Brexit really. He saw it is the weakness it was and felt it was his chance to further weaken Europe. There had always been tension between Europe and Russia, and Russia and Ukraine.

Putin is yesterday's politician and Ukraine was supposed to be his swan song but he could never realistically have taken Kiev. It was posturing and making a legacy on his part.

He seriously underestimated the strength of the Ukraine people, and of NATO and the 'vulnerable' countries on the fringe of Russia.

I have never heard of the deranged girl friend thing, or the supposed NATO aggression against Russia. Ukraine got rid of its nuclear weapons, is that what you mean?

The only people to have paid a price have been the people of Ukraine, and a terrible price it has been. Meanwhile Putin sits in his palace clinging to a crown that has never really fitted him. His head was always too big.

True and would be devasting for many people. I know only to well as I have incurable cancet

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 11:14:44

The deranged girl friend term refers to a situation where one drunken girl will do exactly what they want and expect her sober boyfriend/partner to pick up the slack and save her from the consequences of her actions. Or so I understand it. First time I heard about it today. Seems to fit the Uk now?

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 11:15:22

Exactly what she wants….

Whitewavemark2 Sun 24-Nov-24 11:17:27

I can remember a petition topping over 3million that objected to the way Brexit was going - but they were told to shut up and ignored.

Reason?

Democracy apparently. Who’d have thought?
