This scares me about Putin.

Russia is prepared to launch a wave of cyber attacks on Britain that could “turn out the lights for millions”, a Cabinet minister will warn at a Nato conference on Monday.

Vladimir Putin is willing and capable of triggering a “destabilising and debilitating” electronic strike on the UK, Pat McFadden will say.

Russia is “exceptionally aggressive and reckless in the cyber realm” and wants to gain a “strategic advantage and degrade the states that support Ukraine”, Mr McFadden, who oversees policy on national security and state threats, will warn.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster will say there is an imminent risk of a Russian cyber attack on British infrastructure and businesses that could “shut down the power grids” and deal a hammer blow to the economy.

Is that all that scares you about Putin? I can think of much more.

But I would point out that both the US, UK and other countries are aware of this cyber threat and have their own cyber experts working on the subject.

I agreed course MOnica but the idea of systems being hacked - just think if coordinated malware against banking apps, ATMs, the NHS with its linked IT, airport chaos. We rely on technology so much. Targeting computers by rogue states used to seem the stuff of James Bond movies.

A cyber attack is the least of our worries, a submarine attack on our North Sea gas installations would do much more lasting damage they are very vulnerable. However, that is not on the agenda for now, Putin will wait until he can get a deal with Trump to end the conflict.

If there is no deal that is serious and infrastructure across Europe will be at risk

FGT
Russia ( and other states) have been doing this since the inception of the internet.
The only thing that’s changed is the sophistication from both sides.

Everything about Putin scares me. Evil man.

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 08:58:57

Pat McFadden- say no more.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 24-Nov-24 09:00:00

I’m not sure that Milliband won’t beat Putin to fuel outages anyway. Cyber attacks remain my main worry.

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 09:09:38

Cyber security is well established in this country FGT don’t believe the hype. Government is my main worry. There’s a petition asking for an election with well over required signatures for a debate in Parliament!! Fat chance!!

Putin is just getting desperate. His ridiculous gamble to invade Ukraine just didn't go to plan and he now has to deal with failure, just like Napoleon and all those other 'strong men.'

Yes there may be some cyber attacks (maybe have been) but he's clever enough to not push it too far because he knows the consequences for his people and himself with be very serious.

He plays a shrewd game but he knows he can't 'win' this. I gnore the media hype which feeds his ego.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 24-Nov-24 09:17:50

“ Cripple Britain? We have the Labour party for that surely” said Himself earlier.
🤣

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 09:18:48

keepingquiet I think Putin is the only world leader with a clear aim to protect Russia against NATO aggression. NATO has poked the bear long enough and we may now pay the price.
Have you heard of deranged girl friend theory? It fits the bill perfectly.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 24-Nov-24 09:19:13

Do NHS still use fax machines? I read they are unhackable. Maybe we need to rely more on them!

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 09:20:04

This debate has to be bigger than the NHS surely?

Fleurpepper Sun 24-Nov-24 09:37:31

When I mentionned a few days ago that the UK is in a very vulnerable position- no-one believed me. If Putin wants to 'make' and example in Europe- he will pick a country which is more isolated from the rest- geographically and politically.

Fleurpepper Sun 24-Nov-24 09:39:01

keepingquiet, yes, desperate indeed, getting older and in poor health- and clearly with mental issues. The more desperate, the more dangerous.

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 09:39:12

Fleurpepper I believed you.

Fleurpepper Putin is not mentally deranged. He has clear goals to protect Russia from NATO aggression and expansion. The west has failed to understand the consequences of its actions.

Fleurpepper Sun 24-Nov-24 09:41:36

The very last thing the UK needs ! And you talk about Democracy !

Both, I'd say. The combination is just diabolically frightening.

ronib Sun 24-Nov-24 09:42:44

Fleurpepper Putin might sort out this government for us!!

I didn’t say it was ‘needed’.
I haven’t signed the petition FP! I just looked up the gov.uk figure out of curiosity.
I do believe strongly in democracy. (Even the Brexit vote).
