On the back of the new Jaguar controversial adverts...

What commercial advertising have you loved over the years?

I was always excited to see the new very arty Benson & Hedges ones in particular. I was interested in how they used the surreal to get round the "new" advertising regulations.

I also liked the "worth waiting for" Guiness advert much more recently;

The smash potato advert with the aliens, the episodic Gold Blend coffee advert where they eventually got together. The Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins adverts for Cinzano

NotSpaghetti Sun 24-Nov-24 10:59:38

Oh yes. I loved the Smash advert in its day.

It is the most horrible advert I have seen at Christmas.

NotSpaghetti Sun 24-Nov-24 11:05:35

I don't find it horrible or anything to do with Christmas. I think it's just the start of rebranding as Jaguar hasn't made any money for years - it's all come from the Land Rover side apparently.

The Country Store advert with Maddy Prior

Clarks shoes 'Mummy says when I grow up I'm going to be a proper little madam.'
Also the Martini ones with Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter.

Jaguar advert, just weird.

Witzend Sun 24-Nov-24 11:55:49

The old Campari ones, very beautiful girl in romantic setting saying in a very Estuary voice that she’d come from ‘Luton airport.’

Ditto Boddington’s beer - some of those were hilarious.
And the admittedly un PC Carling Black Label one concerning sunbeds, accompanied by the Dambusters theme!

I liked the comment from one of the YT viewers...

you're selling cars to rich people, not the TellyTubbies.

I hadn't seen the Jaguar ad until now. It certainly did nothing to make me want to rush off and book a test drive.

MissAdventure Sun 24-Nov-24 13:34:02

I quite like it.
It's short, non offensive, and unusual.

NotSpaghetti Sun 24-Nov-24 16:38:12

It put me in mind of the rather tasteful, clean and surreal B&H ones.
I don't mind it but feel it's a bit "samey" for celebrating "difference "

Aveline Sun 24-Nov-24 16:46:02

Just daft way to try to sell cars

Skydancer Sun 24-Nov-24 16:54:18

I too loved the Smash adverts. I wish they were still shown. Most adverts now are complete drivel and make me NOT want to purchase the item. One thing I want to know is why, when perfume is advertised, does the person have to talk SO fast? Virtually all the perfume ads are like that. And I hate the way ads now show close-ups of people's underarms and worse. I keep a book or magazine to hand so I can read during the ad breaks.

Best ad ever smile

I loved the BT adverts with Maureen Lip and. The one where Malcolm got an ology in his exams was brilliant.

Not seen the jag one until the link came in here
Just plain weird wouldn’t make me rush out and buy anything

granfromafar Sun 24-Nov-24 17:26:28

What a strange advert, and not a car in sight!

Grannmarie Sun 24-Nov-24 17:58:24

The Cointreau Christmas advert,
" The ice melts..."

David49 Sun 24-Nov-24 18:07:57

It weird for sure but because you are all commenting on it means it gets noticed, the tactic is well known. I doubt anyone on GN is a likely buyer for the Jag, it’s being introduced in the US in December and prices begin at £100k EV only.

Aveline Sun 24-Nov-24 18:48:59

There's pretty widespread condemnation for the Jaguar advertisment. It's not just Grans.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 24-Nov-24 18:54:45

Go woke go broke Jaguar.
Generating discussion about the brand is good but only if it translates into sales!

We have looked at the e-pace, but not overly impressed.
