Heard ‘Stop The Cavalry’ this morning, I really like this and not sure whyđŸ€
What songs do you like?

I love so many Christmas songs. A favourite CD is the "Ally McBeal" Christmas songs album which DH & I both love. On this album, Robert Downey Jnr. sings what is (IMO) a brilliant version of Joni Mitchell's "River". It always get me!

There’s only one for me. I believe in Father Christmas, Greg Lake. Just wonderful. You can keep the rest along with Christmas!

Ah yes that one too! I love that. Also has a nice 70s feel - reminds me of my teen years.

"Let It Snow" Dean Martin.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas does it for me, especially when sung by Nat King Cole.

I loathe Fairytale of New York and Little Drummer Boy.

My favourite carols are In The Bleak Midwinter (the Holst version) and Carol of the Bells.

A Winters Tale
Last Christmas (has to be with the video! )

I know this is not a traditional song but I love Elvis Presley's song. It's Christmas time pretty baby.

I Love a bit of rock n roll.

It's not strictly a Christmas song, but I love David Essex singing " A Winter's Tale".
Oh David Essex - be still my beating heart..

Personally I think my favourite Christmas-themed song is .............
"'Father Christmas do not touch me" by the Goodies. Not for everyone but as a family with 4 daft boy's
they used sing along with innocent silly joy. It's probably been censored & cancelled now!!!! đŸ€«

Ilovedogs22 Mon 02-Dec-24 17:23:45

Ohh I hope I haven't upset anyone with my comment but the Goodies song was very much of a different time.
In someways better, sometimes worse.
Opinions now often swing much too far on the pendulum between what is now acceptable & what is not , Its all becoming very 1984 Orwellian. Moderation in everything or I think. people will be too scared to voice any opinion at all & then life will not be worth living. đŸ€”

Ohh gulligranny, yes! Have yourself a very merry Christmas always makes me cry, it's so poignant & somehow sadly-beautiful too. 🙂

Oh Holy Night
Little Drummer Boy
Oh come, oh come Emmanuel
Hark the Herald Angels Sing

One I first heard only last year, at a major concert of assorted choirs, both adult and children’s, inc. Gdd1’s school choir, was ‘Christmas on the beach at Waikiki’ - TBH I wasn’t keen on the idea of it, but it was great fun, with a very catchy tune.

There’s a v nice version on YouTube by the Halle choirs.

Fleurpepper Mon 02-Dec-24 18:00:22

So many, as long as they are sung by natural voices. Americanised synthetic versions drive me round the bend (the ones they play on loop in shopping centres).

The one I hate the most ‘Stay another Day’ ..East17. Always on Christmas playlists
 no idea why.

Tim Minchin's White wine in the sun, how did I miss that? First released in 2009, a quirky, different song about his family gathering for Christmas in Australia.
Not everyone's cup of tea 'but I really like it'.

FrankandEarnest Mon 02-Dec-24 19:13:50

well the weather outside is frightful,
but the fire is so delightful,
so as we’ve no place to go
let it snow let it snow let it snow - Dean Martin I think

what I don’t want is the relentless earworm of the
“Christmas Time, mistletoe and wine” dirge

or Noddy Holder croaking “It’s Christmas!!!”
which should be banned from all public places

apart from that I’m fine -

“Mary’s boy child” is being hummed in this house atm

TillyTrotter Mon 02-Dec-24 19:29:37

“When a Child is Born” Johnnie Mathis is a strong favourite of mine.
That deep, rich voice ..

I see nobody has yet mentioned ‘ Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer’ 😂 I can’t think why.

East 17 are fab East End boy's. Good for them, they have beautiful voices & I think the Song was written by Tony Mortimer the talented lead singer & keyboard player. It's a classic, lovely welcome tune each Christmas time .😊

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 03-Dec-24 17:56:42

Oreo, I'm going to confess to having a dancing fabric reindeer that sings "Grandma got run over by a reindeer "
We're classy, here...

Ilovedogs22 Tue 03-Dec-24 19:22:56

I need a dancing & singing reindeer immediately!!!!!

Just remembered another favourite Christmas Carol :-) It brings back visions of childhood where we would sing it rather, not raucously, but exaggeratedly. The Ooohhh would be sung robustly. We three Kings of Orient are...... apart from all the silly versions it was the bit that went

Oooh Star of Wonder Star of Light, Star of Royal beauty bright.

gentleshores Wed 04-Dec-24 00:42:47

Do children still learn all the carols any more?
