Good point about defrosting the cottage pie, Allira, but the ones we buy cook from frozen.

It takes ages!
DH thought the one he "cooked" last night was defrosted (it wasn't, properly) so we waited another 20 minutes to eat.

I love a bought in meal. I cook most days from scratch and DH wakes up with the words what are we having for dinner tonight on his lips.i have very little freezer space two drawers in the house and a tiny one in the garage so only space for fresh ingredients and the dear man does not believe in leftovers, they all go down the gaping maw. I’m with kitty all the way.

It makes perfect sense to me..

But, whichever way you look at it, I have another in the freezer.

We're out on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, lucky us.
But I do having miss cold meats with bubble and squeak on Boxing Day.

I love M&S stuffing. I look lovingly at the trays of delicious stuff but it would be just too naughty to buy one and have it with eg baked potatoes and sprouts. No I'm not really thinking about it...

Ooh, that sounds good. I love Boxing Day sandwiches at the best of times. Not just the turkey/nutroast, but the stuffing, chestnuts, pigs in blankets etc.

M&S have the most delicious pigs in blankets sandwiches. There's some sort of tasty chutney in them. You could copy that idea?

Every time I’m in MnS I buy the single person Cottage pies and Shepard’s pies for my 91 year old mum. She loves them especially as she lives alone.

She has some in her freezer of course, for snowed in days. But will happily eat a fresh one or two while freezing the rest.

I'm the one with the PIBs, but my husband is vegetarian, so won't eat a casserole with pork in it . Our son and I will devour them, but son is only with us for Christmas Day, so even he won't get through lots of them, and daughter is also veggie, so won't help either. DIL is working on Christmas Day, and the plan is that my son will eat with us then drive home to be there for when she finishes her shift. I said he should take her a dinner home so he doesn't need to cook and she gets a Christmas dinner. Son will get one too, so that will see off a good few. He can have some for Christmas sandwiches as well. They won't be wasted.

It was a thoughtful act on my husband's part, just totally misplaced. They are in the freezer, and I'll find ways of using them up, I'm sure. They could be added to my portion of a bean casserole, for instance, or they'd be good with a cooked breakfast.

We love pigs in blankets casserole, although the recipe states “leftover pigs in blankets “ and we never have any of those, so have to make fresh ones

It also didn’t need defrosting so ready when you got home.

I always asked DH what he wants for dinner because sometimes it’s something he’s better a cooking so therefore he makes dinner. Quite simple really. He used to be really fussy, but once I started working at 5pm until 8pm, when the kids were small, he took over cooking duties and found he did like somethings that he’d previously didn’t eat. Now many years later we still share cooking duties.

Yes, eazybee, I did. I have made enough cottage pies in my time to feel no guilt in buying one. In case you are wondering, I am a good cook, my freezer is well stocked and I have no compunction in buying a Cottage Pie, a Chatlie Bigham, a takeaway curry or fish and chips. I've earned it.

It is so much easier when people don't try to be helpful without asking what would actually help! Absolutely this is the most wonderful quote ever, I shall definitely use that one in my volunteering world. No one wants to organise anything, only help, but then they want to do it all their way!!!!

Yup. I agree. Lways good to keep stuff back for when you need it . Men can’t forward plan.

Pigs in blankets. No problem. Cut into thick slices, gently fry, add onions, diced carrots, celery and herbs. Add a can of tomatoes and simmer gently. Serve with pasta. Very tasty. Looking forward to seeing more pig in blanket recipes.
