Check the daisy wheel imprinted on its neck or body. The central number indicates the year (e.g., '22' for 2022). The 12 segments around this number represent months. The filled segments mark its manufacturing month. For instance, if eight segments have dots, it means the bottle was crafted in August.24 Jul 2024

Thinking back to my childhood we never binned a bottle until it leaked but will be more careful in future.

This is crazy it’s a krypton factor puzzle to date a piece of rubber.
Why in Gods name could the manufacturers not just put a date on it?

Oh dear. I haven't looked at out two - very rarely used now but kept for emergencies- cant imagine what they might be..

I have had my hwb for over twenty years. No problem with it, although I haven't used it yet this winter.

There is something called common sense in these matters:
ie
never over-fill
Always release excess air
Use a good quality cover

I had a look at mine the other day and it's about the same age! I did, however, treat myself to a new 'long' hot water bottle with a lovely soft furry cover - bargain price from Aldi!

I may sleep with my hot water bottle, but “date it? “

The vocabulary of love has clearly moved on. 💝

I suppose that would be the definition of a "hot date" well for the initial part of the evening possibly?. Unfortunately there's the inevitability that as the night wears on the hot water bottle will eventually cool on you, they are fickle in that respect. Anyway, whilst they can sometimes be good looking on the outside, imo they're just wet through and through. I'd rather go on a date with a throw I think you know where you are with them.

TerriBull Fri 13-Dec-24 10:26:05

Miss Adventure you got there first grin

I bought a new one yesterday.
It's honestly very easy to read.
I agree with it. There was a long article on TV South West News recently with a consultant from Bristol saying how many people were treated at A & E for scalding from exploding hot water bottles.

I think the problem is, the BS number for hot water bottles looks just like the date.

Agree, yesterday my daughter was filling hers and it split, I Don't know the date of our hot water bottles, this post is very useful to me, I remember a person bringing back a pair of Nike trainers bought in the charity shop I work in, they disintegrated as soon as she walked in them, they were donated brand new but left in a box in the attic for years,

And if it all goes belly up, you can presumably chuck them?

MissAdventure Fri 13-Dec-24 11:18:21

If it's a clandestine date, keep a lid on it, or you'll end up in hot water.

TerriBull Fri 13-Dec-24 11:21:31

Yes I've been known to chuck the odd throw or two, bearing in mind they're a pretty soft touch and don't care too much over who or where they drape themselves. Often viewed as all too easy I fearshock

TerriBull Fri 13-Dec-24 11:23:53

Sometimes I think one is better off with a cushion, they might be square in their appearance, but I think they offer the support we're sometimes looking for during an evening in.

... oh this thread is turning out to be a joy!

I am using a hot water bottle while my husband is in hospital. I feel the cold without him. My son checked it the other day and it is 6 years old but all the rubber and the stopper seem OK.

Useful thread.👏

surely what is relevant is how often it has been used.. if there's the slightest amount of perishing I would get rid of it.. I much prefer an electric blanket..

Shelflife Fri 13-Dec-24 12:12:11

I love a boy water bottle, fill it with great care . Lay it flat on the work surface and fill slowly lifting now and again to expel the air. Keepingquiet please be careful a HWB that is 20 years old is probably not safe!!
