Ultraprocessed foods in boxes with sell by dates weeks ahead. Weird desserts - Do we need, in fact, any of the mad options now available to us on supermarket shelves? Waitrose has spent a lot of money this year on an advert featuring Matthew Macfadyen and comedian Joe Wilkinson, starring a pudding called the No 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert, which looks a bit like a Viennetta. At Sainsbury’s, you can buy a “Christmas Carol-Mel and Brownie Cheesecake”, which is apparently a cheesecake with brownie cubes, salted caramel sauce, chocolate mousse and “bronze lustred” chocolate curls. Tesco has a “Showstopper Macaron Tower”.

Probably all a bit yuk?
I’m hoping for a ‘less UPF Christmas’. Food my grandmother would recognise.

What about you?

I’ve just fried some slices of halloumi in olive oil 2 minutes each side and eaten them with a pink lady apple cut into wedges Babs03 for my lunch! Delicious.

Oh that sounds delicious!
👍

No I don’t buy or eat picky bits including canapes or sickly weird puds either.
Give me a slice of cheese on toast any day.

We also enjoy the rubbish stuff at Christmas. In the midst of everything else, I don't have the time or energy to make them.

I love eating rubbishy processed food at Christmas. It's the only time I do really.

😂

I have to take a plate of nibbles with me when I go to U3A this week.

I was going to buy small readymade savoury snacks but daren't now 😯
Perhaps moked trout on a blini or brown bread ( salmon is now too heavily farmed) with a little cream cheese might ge ok? If I have time.

Allira Mon 16-Dec-24 15:41:43

I can always resort to these 😁 as retro is in.
People still seem to like them!

Allira Mon 16-Dec-24 15:42:24

Actually, not with onions - pineapple!

henetha Mon 16-Dec-24 15:47:53

The taste can be disappointing I find.
But some are ok. Much prefer home made nibbles though. But, it's Christmas, so who needs endless standing in the kitchen doing fiddly bits.

Simply ghastly!!
Honestly?
I don't care.

Thank you escaped they look delicious. Living in France I do sometimes miss Waitrose & M & S for goodies like that.

I have some "Picard" and "Cook" frozen deserts in my food delivery.
There are 26 of us so far for afternoon/evening celebrations on ChristmasEve - so as I'm doing real cooking for the "mains" I feel no shame!

It's not as though we are doing this every day!
And I'm not roasting my own nuts and frying my own crisps either (it's actually years since I made my own crisps).

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 16:05:14

Never roast your own nuts is good advice.

Other nuts are available!

ginny Mon 16-Dec-24 16:10:04

Not keen on any of them myself, but then I enjoy making my own.
Most of the desserts have very little taste even though they look delicious.

TillyTrotter Mon 16-Dec-24 16:21:19

Whatever happened to vol au vents? You could fill with pretty much anything.
Out of the “picky bits” my favourite are M&S mini prawn toasts.
It is a costly way to cater but at Christmas we all push the boat out a bit.

I don’t need any of it, not even your canapés Sago 🤣

A mince pie and a glass of baileys is about as exotic as I need 🤣

Absolutely agree. Although a scoop of ice cream, Baileys and a warm mince pie,is my favourite indulgence once a year.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 16:24:13

Me too.
I don't even like fancy mince pies.
Tee total, so a nice cup of instant coffee does me, with squirty cream on top if I'm feeling posh.

I totally agree with you. UPF is everywhere and is proven to be bad for us.
I shall not be buying any of it.
Everyone to their own preferences of course but it's not for me.

Yumm, still partial to cheese and pineapple, cocktail sausages and vol-au-vents😋

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 16:29:12

My girl and me had a real hankering for cheese and pineapple one year.
We mentioned it in about September, and the yearning got stronger and stronger, so we had them at Christmas, and they were absolutely delicious. smile

Rosie51 Mon 16-Dec-24 16:36:17

smoked trout on a blini or brown bread ( salmon is now too heavily farmed) I buy the wild smoked salmon, I don't buy any farmed salmon at all. I'm told that wild smoked salmon has a totally different taste and colour to the farmed stuff. Wouldn't know about the taste I can't stand the stuff, can't cope with the texture.

Kate1949 Mon 16-Dec-24 16:43:29

I love a sardine and tomato paste sandwich on white bread and butter. How's that for rubbish? grin

Nuts!!
Must add nuts to the list 😁
Thank you
And crisps I suppose.

Someone had made a lot for an afternoon gathering I went to a couple of weeks ago. Pineapple chunks and good strong Cheddar.
They were very popular.
