Ultraprocessed foods in boxes with sell by dates weeks ahead. Weird desserts - Do we need, in fact, any of the mad options now available to us on supermarket shelves? Waitrose has spent a lot of money this year on an advert featuring Matthew Macfadyen and comedian Joe Wilkinson, starring a pudding called the No 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert, which looks a bit like a Viennetta. At Sainsbury’s, you can buy a ā€œChristmas Carol-Mel and Brownie Cheesecakeā€, which is apparently a cheesecake with brownie cubes, salted caramel sauce, chocolate mousse and ā€œbronze lustredā€ chocolate curls. Tesco has a ā€œShowstopper Macaron Towerā€.

Probably all a bit yuk?
I’m hoping for a ā€˜less UPF Christmas’. Food my grandmother would recognise.

What about you?

Sounds great to me. (Except I don't eat fish)

I used to have the Shiphams beef paste with cress in it when I was little.
Mud 'n' grass.

Simply ghastly!!
Honestly?
I don't care.

Lol. Agree. I love cooking but get fed up by boxing day so bought a few bits in M&S last Friday, popped them in the freezer for days i just can't be bothered šŸ˜…

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 17:05:44

Oh, very nice.
What did you go for, just picky bits, or more substantial items?

Ziggy62 Mon 16-Dec-24 17:49:44

Picky bits lol
For the lazy days after boxing day, we don't have visitors this year so can just sit and pick (with wine of course šŸ˜€)

Allira Mon 16-Dec-24 17:50:10

Well, perhaps we should have a Gransnet taste test.

Best shop-bought nibbles, canapƩs, mince pies and puds.

Ziggy62 Mon 16-Dec-24 18:17:05

Oh I like that idea

Grunty Mon 16-Dec-24 18:22:00

Lidl are doing some very nice mince pies with Ameretti this year. Obviously they're not for sharing though.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 18:30:48

I really really like the asda mince pies, for people who dont like fancy ones.
Best I've had.

Jaxjacky Mon 16-Dec-24 18:31:52

I’ve never ā€˜done’ miniaturised food, it’s either ā€˜proper’ like curries, or just snacks like crisps.
However various flavours of Viennetta are in the freezer, grandchildren (and MrJ) love it.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 18:32:33

Theyre sold out though when I went to replace the 3 packs I've eaten already order some.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 18:33:13

I love the mint vienetta

Mud 'n' grass.

I have been known to have that on hot buttered toast (white bread) on the odd occasion!

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 18:38:44

I can remember how delicious it was, but I've not had it for about 50 odd years.
I must try it again.

kittylester Mon 16-Dec-24 18:49:18

We only gave the savoury rubbish not sweet.

Any we don't eat over Christmas come in for Sunday supper.

I’m sure you must think I’m a food snob now! I’m really not. But these UPF ā€˜concoctions’ that last for days on end (?weeks) in their coloured boxes aren’t real food are they? Sugary, false tasting, expensive and a marketeer’s dream to get us to spend money on stuff that really has no intrinsic nutritional value.

Why bother? šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Each to their own. I think we get the message.

But if you're going to a bring-a-plate buffet at eg WI, TWG, U3A or other groups, these finger foods are ideal.

RosiesMaw2 Mon 16-Dec-24 19:02:32

Hmm. I think I AM probably a bit of a food snob. When we lived in London I used to cater for cocktail parties, weddings and suchlike ā€œdo’sā€so I have had lots of experience of prepping canapĆ©s and ā€œnibbly bitsā€ , but every once in a while I crave junk food- a dirty burger, or KFC or a trip to Nando’s.
Ready made supermarket canapĆ©s rarely hit the spot but knowing how much work can go into a tray of little ā€œbonnes bouchesā€ well, sometimes life is too short to stuff a mushroom!
Room for all sorts?

Georgesgran Mon 16-Dec-24 19:05:38

I’ve always bought a selection (M&S) of savouries to freeze, then throughout the year, I can take one or two from each box and it makes for an interesting dinner, with a glass of wine.

NotSpaghetti Mon 16-Dec-24 19:05:47

FriedGreenTomatoes2 if they are frozen they don't need to be do "messed about".
You can find decent "ordinary" foods too - that don't have lots of extras in. Picard are good for emergencies and don't have things un that aren't in my cupboard or fridge.

Allira Mon 16-Dec-24 19:05:52

life is too short to stuff a mushroom!

I've done that for family but taking a token plate of savouries to a do?
No!

Blinko Mon 16-Dec-24 19:11:31

I’ve heard M&S are doing something called nutty clouds…or could be cloudy nuts? Anyone seen them?

CanadianGran Mon 16-Dec-24 19:16:44

Hmm, I've never heard of pineapple and cheddar together, but I think it's worthy of a try!

Just on Saturday I made some smoked salmon mini-tarts to bring to an event. The salmon was caught and smoked by my DH. He does a really good job. The tarts were a hit.

We don't have a lot of people around over the holidays. Just the immediate family for Christmas dinner. They all leave around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, still groaning from the turkey and fixings, so I don't bother with nibbly bits. Some baking, but no savouries.

Oooeee!
I love them already, just by the name.

Pineapple and cheese on cocktail sticks, stuck into a hedgehog
Very Abigail's Party! 😁
