Ultraprocessed foods in boxes with sell by dates weeks ahead. Weird desserts - Do we need, in fact, any of the mad options now available to us on supermarket shelves? Waitrose has spent a lot of money this year on an advert featuring Matthew Macfadyen and comedian Joe Wilkinson, starring a pudding called the No 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert, which looks a bit like a Viennetta. At Sainsbury’s, you can buy a “Christmas Carol-Mel and Brownie Cheesecake”, which is apparently a cheesecake with brownie cubes, salted caramel sauce, chocolate mousse and “bronze lustred” chocolate curls. Tesco has a “Showstopper Macaron Tower”.

Probably all a bit yuk?
I’m hoping for a ‘less UPF Christmas’. Food my grandmother would recognise.

What about you?

You can try but you will not put me off😉

These are not eaten as a meal by us but as a nibble to be enjoyed with a drink , especially with a few of us together.
Like someone up thread, I can’t scroll back, I freeze any we don’t use immediately and when my H was alive we would have a couple with our G&T before our meal at the weekend.
Very happy memories for me.

It reminds me of my girl, because she first ever cooked halloumi for me.
I'd never heard of it.
She loved the squeak, too. smile

I’ve just fried some slices of halloumi in olive oil 2 minutes each side and eaten them with a pink lady apple cut into wedges Babs03 for my lunch! Delicious.

I often have that for lunch. Half a pack of halloumi, sliced and fried in just a film of oil, a cut up apple plus maybe a few slices of a pepper and a small chunk of white cabbage.

You tell 'em!
I mean, at 104 years old, how can anyone argue with this woman?

Look at her muscles, as they flex, ready to bash me one. grin

I'm loving this ridiculous thread!

Here’s one ad.
If you picked up a paper plate and a plastic fork would this array of party food really tempt you?

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 20:33:04

Me too.
Honestly, it's the season to be jolly, afterall.

Scribbles Mon 16-Dec-24 20:33:08

YEUK ALERT!!
I didn't want to turn anyone's stomach, J52, so I deliberately didn't say that. But, yes. Noses and old scabs, too.
Sorry, everyone. I've lowered the tone. I'll get my coat.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 20:34:28

I'd prefer it on a shovel, really, fgt.

It’s what I call ‘brown food’?

What’s wrong with what we have had for years cheese and pineapple on a stick. Mini sausage rolls or pies with pickle cheese fondue with dippy delights, meaty fishy or veggie kebabs that take your fancy.
Coleslaws and salads homemade or shop bought rice salad. As mentioned vol au vents with tasty fillings easy to prepare as is garlic bread. There is so much more normal savoury foods and desserts that are not saturated with rubbish.

kittylester Tue 17-Dec-24 06:55:59

I have never seen them labelled 'pickybits'!

Redhead, the point about bought party food is that it is there when you fancy it during a very busy period - your list would need to be prepared.

I think Iceland is just advertising that they have "branded" foods with this photo.
I don't think that anyone would be presented with only this spread at a buffet

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 17-Dec-24 08:47:05

Fair comment NotSpaghetti.

I remember serving vol au vents, (frozen?) filled with tinned prawns and tinned potato salad at a neighbourhood gathering after Christmas, must be about 1980.

They seemed delicious and the height of sophistication to me back then. đŸ„č

My guests enjoyed them, as I recall.

My FIL called vol au vents ‘mystery pies’.

Granmarderby10 Tue 17-Dec-24 10:08:37

đŸ€”whatever happened to tinned shrimps/prawns I wonder? And creamed mushrooms also

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 17-Dec-24 10:13:39

‘Mystery pies’ I like it!

'I don't think anyone would be presented with only this food at a buffet'. They might in this house!

I'd pop round for that!

As for desserts at a buffet table (I don’t bake but I know a woman who does đŸ€Ł) and I’d just order a Victoria sponge and a chocolate log. Full of ‘what you know’. Butter, eggs, flour.
Delicious and proper food - no list of additives.

MissAdventure Tue 17-Dec-24 10:20:00

All together now!

Picky bits, picky bits, pickies all the way!
Oh what fun, to stuff ourselves, with beige food off a tray, hey!

MissAdventure Tue 17-Dec-24 10:22:30

What would you have to drink, fgt?
Most spirits and wines are processed or ultra processed, you know.

Babs03 Tue 17-Dec-24 10:22:48

I remember when quiches first came out, every buffet table was replete with them. I went one better, I made mini quiches 😂

Astitchintime Tue 17-Dec-24 10:25:13

There isn't much by way of commercially produced party food that actually appeals to me. Reading the ingredients can be very alarming - 5 or more ingredients is a sound indication that the food is ultra-processed and something to avoid as far as I am concerned.
