😮 ghastly 🎄 supermarket party food.

Ultraprocessed foods in boxes with sell by dates weeks ahead. Weird desserts - Do we need, in fact, any of the mad options now available to us on supermarket shelves? Waitrose has spent a lot of money this year on an advert featuring Matthew Macfadyen and comedian Joe Wilkinson, starring a pudding called the No 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert, which looks a bit like a Viennetta. At Sainsbury’s, you can buy a “Christmas Carol-Mel and Brownie Cheesecake”, which is apparently a cheesecake with brownie cubes, salted caramel sauce, chocolate mousse and “bronze lustred” chocolate curls. Tesco has a “Showstopper Macaron Tower”.

Probably all a bit yuk?
I’m hoping for a ‘less UPF Christmas’. Food my grandmother would recognise.

What about you?

I’ve heard M&S are doing something called nutty clouds…or could be cloudy nuts? Anyone seen them?

Oooeee!
I love them already, just by the name.

I think they might be something like Ferrero Rocher

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 19:25:45

Swoon.
I love those too.

I stopped buying it a couple of years ago.

I used to buy some bits and enjoy them.

Those sweet things described by OP do sound yuck, but I’m not made keen on a lot of sweet things anyway.

I’ll be buying some M&S fishy canapés for Christmas Day. We have dinner at around 5, no lunch after late breakfast, and no starter, so I serve plenty of those a couple of hours beforehand.
Thinking of making some angels and devils on horseback, too, but we shall see - need to find some smoked oysters for the angels.

I have a sudden fancy for a Tunnock's Tea Cake.

Witzend Mon 16-Dec-24 19:26:52

mad keen!!

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 19:27:36

Are they the ones with marshmallow in?

Allira Mon 16-Dec-24 19:31:07

Yes.
I don't normally like marshmallow 🤔

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 19:33:21

I tend to prefer savoury stuff, but if the teacakes were here, their turn would come to get eaten, no doubt.

^Hmm, I've never heard of pineapple and cheddar together, but I think it's worthy of a try!^
Pineapple and cheese on cocktail sticks, stuck into a hedgehog
Very Abigail's Party! 😁

And like a lot of party snacks our mothers put together - healthy.

Ditto vol au vents with their fillings.

What other party food would our mothers have served up? You know, stuff not enriched by emulsifiers often industrially formulated, using synthetic sweeteners, colourings and other chemical preservatives and emulsifiers.

They have to ‘taste’ yummy or we’d never buy them.

Tunnocks marshmallows are delish, would much prefer those to a box of chocs under the tree.

My GD and I are very partial to a few “picky bits “ we have tried some from M&S so far.
Prawn toasts and prawns in tempura batter lovely.
Halloumi in blankets, tiny Yorkshire puddings with a filling I can’t remember were good and others I will have to ask her about, my memory is not good now.
We never have the sweet ones, only savoury.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 19:56:25

I love halloumi.
The way it squeaks against your teeth is great. smile

Scribbles Mon 16-Dec-24 19:57:43

I don't think I could bear to eat anything labelled "picky bits". The phrase makes me shudder.

I love it!
Especially dry fried until crispy and served on a soft white bap with salad and whatever sauce you like.
Am hungry now and already had dinner!

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 19:59:35

I'm surprised some people can bear to eat at all, frankly.

wink

Babs03 Mon 16-Dec-24 20:00:55

Sometimes I find buffets a bit of a faff, and a big pan of curry or chili served with naan or tortillas and salads is easier.

Ziggy62 Mon 16-Dec-24 20:01:06

I nearly had a temper tantrum in M&S last week, Dawn French has been advertising mini pork pies topped with cranberries but I've tried 3 stores and can't get them
My Christmas is ruined 🤣🤣🤣

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 20:01:30

I've never had them like that, Babs but I'll definitely make a dinner out of them done that way now you've said it.

Usedtobeblonde Mon 16-Dec-24 20:08:40

Halloumi coated in very fine dry breadcrumbs, fried in butter and with a sweet chilli dip is wonderful

Oh yes 👍

FriedGreenTomatoes2 None of the offerings sound tempting. I love to cook, I'll just cook from my own list. Interesting TV adverts!

MissAdventure Mon 16-Dec-24 20:12:11

Yes,I love sweet chilli too.
Halloumi is something my boys actually like that isn't meat.
It means we eat the same, which is rare.

Usedtobeblonde Mon 16-Dec-24 20:13:34

These are not eaten as a meal by us but as a nibble to be enjoyed with a drink , especially with a few of us together.
Like someone up thread, I can’t scroll back, I freeze any we don’t use immediately and when my H was alive we would have a couple with our G&T before our meal at the weekend.
Very happy memories for me.

Reminds me of people picking their teeth! 😱
