Ultraprocessed foods in boxes with sell by dates weeks ahead. Weird desserts - Do we need, in fact, any of the mad options now available to us on supermarket shelves? Waitrose has spent a lot of money this year on an advert featuring Matthew Macfadyen and comedian Joe Wilkinson, starring a pudding called the No 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert, which looks a bit like a Viennetta. At Sainsbury’s, you can buy a “Christmas Carol-Mel and Brownie Cheesecake”, which is apparently a cheesecake with brownie cubes, salted caramel sauce, chocolate mousse and “bronze lustred” chocolate curls. Tesco has a “Showstopper Macaron Tower”.

Probably all a bit yuk?
I’m hoping for a ‘less UPF Christmas’. Food my grandmother would recognise.

What about you?

MissAdventure I didn't read it as a criticism at all. No problem.

Having said that, I've currently got a pheasant hanging in the shed waiting to be plucked...
Luckily for me, I'm not the resident pheasant plucker in the family (try saying that in a hurry!) gringringrin

MissAdventure Tue 17-Dec-24 13:10:39

Are you the pheasant pluckers mate, then? wink

Larsonsmum Tue 17-Dec-24 13:11:56

I cook/make everything myself, but despite that I think all the supermarkets make fabulous festive options. Not everyone can or wants to do all the cooking/preparation themselves - let people buy prepared items if they wish. Each to their own.

Haha, I guess I am! blush

I don't buy it. Would rather make my own. As long as I can get hold of basic ingredients and fresh fruit and veg, I don't mind what else they sell. I assume those that buy it like it.

What are these canapés or canaps as my husband calls them - and do they only come out at Christmas 🥳🫣

MissAdventure Tue 17-Dec-24 13:29:11

No idea, I've never had one. smile

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 17-Dec-24 13:32:35

I’m not a snob. Eat those supermarket desserts and enjoy them. Your choice and I’m no Grinch. Just don’t kid yourself these industrially produced festive boxes are food. Well “Not as we know it Jim”.

MissAdventure Tue 17-Dec-24 13:44:43

Have you checked out your highly processed drink consumption, though, fgt??smile

Supermarket chains produce this sort of "food"at this time of year because they know their customers are morons, who will buy anything called party food.

How rude is that!
You have no idea what anyone else has going on in their lives and if eating something like that brings them a little joy, so what. It doesn't make them a moron.

poppysmum Tue 17-Dec-24 13:57:56

just done an online shop at Asda and for some reason all the deserts seem to be smothered or are salted caramel and all the savoury foods are very spicy my one pet hate

MissAdventure Tue 17-Dec-24 14:02:37

Asda ice-cream is delicious.
I think they do just vanilla flavour, too. smile

Grunty

I wait all year for the frozen prawn party ring with the lurid pink dipping sauce!

Yay!

"They're all yuk" - is that right Sago? How many have you tried? As the saying goes, don't knock it til you've tried it! I'm not impressed with many of the superior attitudes expressed on this thread. 😤

Hahaha

My DIL loves a Daim bar cake regardless of how many home made puds are available we have to keep one in the freezer for her.
I don’t eat sweet stuff but her body her choice

Can you buy those anywhere now?
They used to be only in IKEA.

Off to investigate 😀

Allira Tue 17-Dec-24 14:15:51

Ooh, lots of outlets.
Lovely but I couldn't eat a whole one and no-one else likes hazelnuts.

Cossy Tue 17-Dec-24 14:19:50

MissAdventure

I'm surprised some people can bear to eat at all, frankly.

wink

😂😂😂😂😂

We love picky bits, we call it English Tapa or British Tali! Love that you can have a little bit of lots of stuff!

Yesterday I watched Jamie Oliver slow roast about 6 carrots in the oven for over one and a half hours, doused with orange juice. Time well spent. Yum.

This made me howl with laughter when I read the article in The Times yesterday entitled “The supermarkets’ worst festive food offences”

The prices of most of these 'special xmas treats' puts me off, plus so many are spicy asian type foods which we don't like anyway. Just traditional Christmas fare for this family suits us fine.

I like the look of the Lemoncello Stollen bites. Might have to get some.
Oh BTW unless you make your own I’d avoid a bought Christmas Pudding, it’s processed and brown! 😂

Casdon Tue 17-Dec-24 14:30:29

That writer is spot on, they all sound horrible - the sticky toffee cheddar is particularly gruesome I think.

LadyGaGa Tue 17-Dec-24 14:32:19

That’s hilarious Glammagran 🤣🤣 I’ve actually got the Aldi golden bauble in my freezer. I’ve saved the description to share on Christmas Day 🥳😂
