We have done a lot of celebrating on New Year's Eve over the years but now we prefer to have a quiet evening in. We will enjoy a lovely meal and some nice wine and be in bed before Midnight. How about you do you still like to celebrate or is that now a thing of the past?

For the last few years I have organised a theatre matinee visit on NYEve to see the Pantomime .5 of us all over 60 have a great time. The special effects are meant to be superb this year so I'm extra excited!
I'm home for the evening and watch the celebrations on TV before heading for bed after midnight.

We are celebrating New Year in Madeira my DH and I. The fireworks are spectacular and some of the best in the world.

WhiteSwan63 aren't they just?
We've been in Madeira overnight on New Year's Eve on a Marella cruise, and had a panoramic view of the whole harbour.
Amazing fireworks!

These days we usually have DD plus DS and family with us, so we stay in watch television, play games, I serve plates of nibbles from 10.00pm, we raise glasses of fizz to see in the New year - then we all go to bed.

If we are home alone for any reason we are usually in bed by 10.00pm. In the past New Year has never been a really big deal - that was Christmas, but we have been to a variety of dinner dances at various times in the past.

I haven’t stayed up for many years, I’ll be in bed by 9 and fast asleep soon after!

We’ve always celebrated the New Year - even when our family was young we’d share the evening with friends with children of the same age, their house one year, ours the next. When the family were grown we always went out, and sometimes staggered home in our fancy dress at around 5 on New Year’s Day. I once drunkenly bought a violin from eBay before I fell into bed, because I decided on the way home that I’d learn to play a musical instrument as my NY resolution. grin

These days we celebrate with four of our best friends, taking turns to host at one of our three houses. Sometimes with a few extra friends invited. A lovely meal, great company, reminiscences and much laughter. A bit of music and sometimes dancing. Always a quiz and a couple of daft games, and the TV goes on for the fireworks and countdown. Walking back home for 2ish for DH to be our first foot. We take the NY bag with us with a piece of bread, twist of salt, newly minted pound coin and lump of coal, and the bottle of whiskey’s hidden by the front door. We just have to remember that he needs to pick it up and go in first. smile

Last time I actually saw any NY fireworks (except on TV) was when we were staying with friends in very rural Devon. Their house was at a high elevation, so from their front garden with glasses of 🥂we could see the fireworks in at least 3 different nearby towns. That did feel more NYE-ish than usual.

For the last 10 or so years we’ve gone to a hotel for 3 nights from Dec 30th with another couple. The food and atmosphere are good there. On NYE there’s a special dinner and a dance band. Plenty of quiet spaces for those who prefer that. This year, sadly, we can’t go. DH has been unwell since February and is still recovering from surgery and other treatments. We will meet our friends on NYD for coffee or lunch. We’ve decided just to spend an ordinary evening. No special food or drink and an early night. I don’t see the point unless you can go out.

Although I'm a sociable person and love a bit of fun, I've never actually been to a NYE party. It's something that's always eluded me for some reason. I've celebrated at home of course but never gone out to a "big bash". Now I'm approaching 70 I honestly couldn't be bothered so I guess I've missed my chance! My son, the cat and I will probably stay up until midnight. We live near the docks and I love to hear the ships hooters go off at midnight. There's always a big firework display at the local Rugby Club too. We live on a hill and can see all the action. A sip of champagne maybe and then bed for everyone.

My husband is a Hogmanay baby, if weather permits, we will meet the family for breakfast. I usually cook a meal at night, occasionally in past years we have went out for lunch. I have celebrated New Year when young and before that Hogmanay carry-on in Edinburgh where they now close half the city. I dont ever see that as anything remotely connected to Hogmanay but times change. To be honest I usually just read and we have a nice dinner on New Year's Day.

Floradora9 Sun 29-Dec-24 21:35:17

We used to have friends who had the most wonderful parties on Hogmanay sadly the husband has now died as have other friends we might have parties with. Being Scottish we have to have a New Year's Day celebration so I am hosting all the family . As a child we went to my aunts' celebration and a great aunt always sang " A Gud New Year " to us all . Always steak pie for a main course and trifle for pudding . One trifle had sherry in it the other did not to cater for the children and one tea total aunt.

prefer to be in bed by midnight, like to watch the fireworks on tv. Not a happy time as my dad passed away on new years day

mabon1 Mon 30-Dec-24 11:20:16

No, as it reminded me of a New Year's Eve when we were called to the hospital to find our middle son close to death wired up to machines as his drinks had been spiked, happily he recovered.

On m’y own - too many memories, nothing to celebrate. Glad to see the back of 2024!
Will just enjoy Jules Holland ❤️

SillyNanny321 Mon 30-Dec-24 11:21:56

Usually we do not bother too much just a quick message. After spending Christmas day & Boxing day with my family my Grandchildren wanted to do it all over again as they had enjoyed it all so much. So we are doing it all again on New Years Eve with food, games but no presents. Making the most of it as children grow so fast maybe next year they will not like the Christmas Holidays!

yrhengastan62 Mon 30-Dec-24 11:27:56

When I was younger it was just another excuse to go out and party in the pubs. Now I don't do that, I don't understand what I'm celebrating ( never have done really). Same old stuff, another day.

Missiseff Mon 30-Dec-24 11:40:27

No. My husband's anti-social.

Lizzie44 Mon 30-Dec-24 11:42:45

We lived in Scotland for 15 years and celebrated Hogmanay door to door first-footing with a bottle of whisky until the early hours. Nowadays (back inEngland and in our 80s) we just about manage to stay awake for "the bells" and after a quick chink of our glasses head off to bed.

surfingsal Mon 30-Dec-24 11:46:27

We live on the seafront and in the past just before midnight most of the village would appear on the top of the beach , if the tide was out we would be on the beach, there would be a lot of fireworks and a lot of champagne , it was a lovely tradition that went on for years but slowly the numbers decreased and we also had a few storms which prevented us going out so nowadays there is just a handful of people and it no longer feels the same. we will probably stay up have a glass or two of fizz then go to bed .

I am quite excited that for the first time in many years l am going out on New Year's Eve. One of my sons-in-law is doing a Disco/karaoke at the social club in a nearby village. All the family are going, my two daughters, my other son-in-law, two teenage grandsons and two little granddaughters. One of my granddaughters will be eight on New Year's Day so we will mark that as well after we've seen in the new year.

cc Mon 30-Dec-24 11:57:53

It isn't really a special day for me any longer, we don't stay up late though I might make a special meal.

cc Mon 30-Dec-24 11:58:53

(I'm not sure I'd be up for staying up until midnight any longer, I'd probably be dozing quietly in the corner if we went to a party).

Lettice Mon 30-Dec-24 12:06:29

I live in Edinburgh. The city celebrates so if you walk down the street you are included, citizens and tourists both. Two days plus to look forward to. Just going out for appropriate supplies .
