Irrational dislikes of people you don’t know..

Perhaps I shouldn’t introduce this topic, as it could get nasty. I was thinking how I have irrational dislikes of people I see on television whom I don’t know at all. Helen Skelton, Sarah Moore (from Money for Nothing), Meghan used-to-be Markle, Luke Littler. I know nothing about any of these people, but I can’t stand them.

Of course the upside of this is that I have irrational likes as well.

Mollygo I was not a fan of Laura Kuenssberg on TV, but several years ago we met her in a pub near H of P. In real life she is very pleasant and personable, and I totally changed my mind.

That’s exactly the reason for the irrational dislikes. I always liked Victoria Coren Mitchell, but even better after meeting her.

I haven’t really got any irrational dislikes more not a fan

I tend to trust my own judgements, although I often bend over backwards to treat people fairly, when I know that I have an irrational dislike of them. sometimes later on I feel that I must have sensed something about them. I never liked Jimmy Saville. thought he was smarmy arrogant and thought he was the cats whiskers! Never met the man, and never wanted to , but then of course I was pleased to find out that my feelings were very well founded as far as he was concerned. I like Alan Titchmarsh and as a keen gardener myself tend to like most gardeners but not the irishman whose name just wont come to me but he ad curly hair, a pleasant smile and did some gardens for chelsea etc and I think was called diament or dermot something. Cannot stand most male politicians who think they have the right to tell women what they are supposed to be thinking etc. My role model is Stephanie Cole in Waiting for God! As an eldest, teacher, lecturer with several languages, and having lived abroad and travelled quite a bit, I dont take kindly to be talked down to by a man. For example we went to change the car. The garage we normally used hadnt got anything suitable so went to another garage. I asked 2 questions and the man looked directly at my husband and spoke to him. Basically ignored me, after the third question, I said to my husband "come on we will go elsewhere" The man then looked at me and said Oh he had several possible cars that might suit. I replied that I was not interested in dealing with such a chauvanist, and for his information by this time my husband did about 5000 a year for personal use as he had retire. I was doing over 23000 a year doing 3 days a week as hospital car volunteer. Driving sometimes twice a day from the top of the dales to James Cook in Middlesborough. As I would be out and responsible for getting patients on time to the hospital I needed a decent car. He then tried to change his attitude and asked me to look at another car. I looked straight at him, said I do not want to deal with people who do not respect me as a driver, and that not only would I not buy from them but would advise all other hospital car drivers to go elsewhere!! Lying politicians of all parties, who think we are so stupid that we cant remember what they said and try to wriggle out of it. Men who think they can STEAL money from WASPI women. and pretend that they never supported them. The moron who decided that the winter fuel payment should not be paid if you did not get pension credit and who devised a system that pays you just above the cut off level of pension, so that you get no benefits, yet when you ask your bank if you can change to an account that pays some interest, they inform you that you do not pay in enough each month to be allowed to have the better account. My situation is such that if only I could persuade them to CUT my pension by I think it is £10 or £20 a week, I would then qualify for benefits and actually get things like free prescriptions etc etc. The insulting morons who inform women that there are so few that would benefit by received the owed money to WASPI women, that it is not worth paying and not many people would be affected. I dont care if there are only 3 people entitled to it (there are far more of course) we are owed that money and by keeping it they are stealing from us . Could never stand Donald Trump ( well named Trump an unpleasant smell!!. The lying cheating Boris Johnson who thinks you make rules for other people but it doesnt count for you! WHY would we want to have a prime minister , representing Britain, who is a known liar, cheat, and totally untrustworthy? The BBC world service was known and trusted for impartial and truthful reporting. I have been in a war zone and had people from both sides, say that they had heard of a specific thing but that they were waiting for the BBC world service to report it . and then they would act upon it. Now these arrogant politicians decry the BBC because they wont follow the party line. Well I dont give a toss whether people think that the BBC lean to the left or right. When it comes to reporting on specific happenings , I would trust them more than anyone else.In fact I have to say that there are very few men I trust much at all as it stands. My wonderful husband I promoted to Honorary Woman, no greater praise can I give!! Sadly my original attitude of assuming all people were decent and honest until they proved otherwise, has now changed to the opposite. Trust no one., record promises, get written information on headed notepaper. have someone with you so that there are two of you who can confirm what was said. Send important letters by recorded delivery. They have to sign for them and cannot pretend they did not receive them. You had a date and time they are received. When they then tell you on the phone that they have not received this complaint or letter, you say quietly , that is strange, I have here the record that you signed for this letter at x time on y day. Deathly silence whilst they realise they are caught by the short and curlies!! When I am on my phone I use my landline to ring such calls as I record it all. So once again at some point in the conversation will simply say , well that is fine, I always record my calls so I have you stating x or y, and we can carry on from ther. works a treat!!

Oh madeleine 45 couldn’t agree more with your post hit the nail on the head with all of it well said especially about us waspi women this would never had happened if it had been men !!thank you for your interesting post

The men who'd always had to work 5 years longer than women despite their shorter life expectancy. Yes they get it all their own way don't they.

If you are over 60 you are entitled to free prescriptions in the UK as far as I know, you certainly are in England as I'm not on any benefits and my prescriptions are free.

People I don't know but dislike for no good reason are:
Clive Myrie (news presenter) - just seems smug to me.
Alistair Stewart - ditto
Laura Keunsberg
Jack Black - soooo irritating
Matt Lucas

Met Clive Myrie when I accompanied my GS to his Gold DofE celebration. He was really nice and GS liked him as well.

Amanda Holden, Gregg Wallace, Richard Hammond, Dick Littleton(? Short guy on daytime bbc1) Peter Andre (my sister & niece regularly watch him in concert despite only having 2 hits!) I also think Johnny Depp always looks grubby. My sister cannot abide Paul McCartney, can't watch him. My husband is the same with PM & really dislikes Tom Cruise, won't watch any of his films & can't abide the character of Jack in Silent witness. My dm has a long list of people she dislikes! 😂

Am late to this thread with one thing and another, but I cannot stand H from Steps.
OH says it's irrational and he doesn't particularly do anything to offend, but I can't help it, he just makes my back creep, as does Jimmy Carr and his horrendous laugh !!!

^What a snivelling litte creep of a man^

Blimey! 😮

I can take or leave Titchmarsh but I do think your comment is a little cruel! I have never noticed him snivelling or creeping! Will look out for those traits in future.

I'm not so keen on our new next door neighbour who has played the lead in some musicals.

He keeps practicing just when we are sitting down to do the crossword.

I’ve always had an irrational dislike of Greg Wallace. I now know why!

I hated Greg Wallace long ago. I always said I would never want to be in a room alone with him and that was long before his latest antics. How the heck did he manage to get FOUR women to marry him? I bet they all have guide dogs! Seriously, he seems a really smarmy git and makes my flesh creep. 🤮

Merlotgran, Sorry, no I know it wasn’t yours and I have no idea why my post made it look as though you had written it. Sorry for any embarrassment caused!

No probs!

These repeated messages can often be confusing to read.

I don't hate but get "unsettled" by people because of their looks, mannerisms and speech
"Step back" people, they makes me recoil
David Bowie looks feral, Jack Nicholson looks not only terrifying but insane.
James Nesbit who played Pontius Pilate with his irremovable "Norn Irn" accent
Lyse Doucet who strangles every innocent vowel she encounters
Lesley Garrett who unleashes her bosom and charges up behind it and is a "singer"???
Woodentops-unmoving Suranne Jones, Christopher Eccleston
But Gordon Ramsay is amazing in his series on US restaurants and swears very little.

In 1993, I once spent 45 minutes totally alone on a coach in Dover with David Bowie (don’t ask!) and he was one of the nicest men I have ever met. He was really chatty and friendly and was extremely interested in how the Channel Tunnel, (opening the following year) would affect Kent, especially the ports. He was an absolute pleasure to be with.
By the way, contrary to reports, he hadn’t exactly got eyes of different colours. It was just that one pupil was bigger than the other and gave that impression.
He was lovely!

Crossstichfan wow! I am so envious 🩵

Allira Wed 08-Jan-25 16:41:06

Lyse Doucet who strangles every innocent vowel she encounters
Lyse Doucet's accent is unusual but absolutely authentic. She is Candian and from an area called Acadia.
She is a first-class journalist.

Well I suppose it saves on buying tickets Kitty...

I have many and various irrational dislikes, the main ones being Helen Skelton, Carol Vorderman, James Martin (so smug!) Robbie Savage, Alison Hammond - the list is endless.

DH, on the other hand, has only one; a long-standing loathing of Bruce Forsyth who he says was the rudest, most unpleasant person he ever worked with (DH was a BBC lighting director).

Alex Jones, from the One Show, her voice really grates with me despite being Welsh myself, Emmon Holmes, Gino Decampo and Jamie Oliver.
I also "go off" people when they seem to be on every program and advert, you just get sick of seeing the same face every time I switch on the TV.

Ilovedogs22 Wed 08-Jan-25 18:02:03

Ohh, someone mentioned James Martin the chef I ruddy well cannot stand the pompous, puffed-up twit.
I turn over whenever I see his smug, smug, smug flabby fizog. 🤗

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 08-Jan-25 18:42:42

I do think that voices matter. I understand that Stacey Solomon is at very pleasant person, but I cannot watch her because of her voice.
I felt the same about Nicholas Parsons: irrational, I know.
On the other hand,I like to listen to Lyse Doucet, for many reasons , and have no trouble with her accent

MissAdventure Wed 08-Jan-25 19:09:40

Stacey Solomon's voice seems to change, and that's what's pees me off,
All breathy and Essex and dizzy sometimes, and very different at others.
