Open your bins!

Our black bin is collected before 6.30 am.

You have to put it out the night before, I doubt many folk get up at 6 next day to loosen their lid though.

Yes, out you go armed with a sturdy screwdriver and put some effort into it.

It makes it so much easier for the local hungry wildlife -foxes, rats etc- to access the contents too

When the lorry tips the bins up, I would think that the weight of the contents would force the lid open? I could be wrong of course. My bin had been out three nights here (long story) in temps below freezing and it was still emptied the following morning.

A swift bang on the top of the lid in the middle will open the bin.
I used a side fist yesterday and it opened no problem

We don't have bins, only for garden waste and they don't get collected during the winter months except for one just after Christmas.

We are requested to put them out by 7.a.m, (every three weeks there are three bins to go out) No way am I an 83 year old going out at that time to open a bin lid. How old you are you Mum of Three I wonder? There are many seagulls in this area, I live near the sea, the contents would be all over the place.

Pop a bit of cardboard or something between the lid & the bin so it is just ajar..mind you it took me 15 mins to open my frozen back gate this week, to put the bin out 😆

I'm in Scotland, where it's currently below zero daytimes, never mind at night, and I've watched the bins going out. Yes they freeze, but tipping them normally opens the lid, and if it doesn't they just bang on the top.

This may come as a surprise but I'm in my 70's. I live in a block of flats and I have the job of putting out the bins of 4 residents. I was out this morning at 5:30, dragging out the bins and then used a pair of kitchen scissors to lever up the lids as they were all stuck fast with ice.

I observed the bin men this morning. They give a swift thump to the middle of the bin lid and it popped open easily.

Ours is collected at 7 am sometimes so it goes out the night before but the only other bin apart from garden waste is a small food waste bin and the food is in small bags; I don't think it freezes shut.

Seagulls are a nuisance, they can smell food from a mile away! Even a trace left on a plastic container or tin attracts them.

That's just what I do Patsytaylor.
Handy as well to stop the lid freezing when you want to put something in it.

I have never not had my bin emptied because it’s frozen. The bin men must know how to deal with it. Mine was emptied yesterday.

Those of you struggling to put the bins out - can you contact your council and ask for assistance?

The lovely bin people who empty my mother-in-law's bins come to get them from the side of the house and bring them back again empty.

She just phoned the council and asked.
