I never thought I would start a Meghan and Harry thread but...... had gone

It was reported today that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had gone to Los Angeles to give comfort and food to those affected by the dreadful wildfires there.

My immediate reaction was revulsion that well known celebrities, let alone this pair, should think visiting somewhere, quite some distance from where you live that is undergoing a horrendous catastrophe, which you can do nothing to alleviate, would benefit from your presence, hugging and talking to people, and, of course, being photographed doing so.

I understand that they have offered to house someone who has been burnt out. That shouldn't be too difficult, there are plenty of A listers who have been burnt out.

Not really owns, whilst he has the title Prince of Wales he receives monies yes, that isn’t truly home ownership.

I beg to differ. So if I happened to have lots of properties which I rented out, I wouldn't really 'own' them? How is he different from any other landlord? The Duchy of Cornwall's property portfolio is estimated to be worth more than £1billion.

If he became King next week ?

MissInterpreted Sun 12-Jan-25 12:45:00

What does that have to do with anything? My point would still be valid - as he would still own numerous properties, just as his father does at the moment.

If you owned a portfolio of properties you could sell them, leave them to whoever you want in your will, do what you want with them. It wouldn’t be a condition of your ownership that you could benefit from them only as long as you held the title of MissInterpreted.

That's not what I said. William owns numerous properties now. He will still own numerous properties when he becomes King - just not necessarily the same properties.
And while I accept your point, Barleyfields, they still technically own those properties as long as they hold those titles.

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 13:03:10

As I thought , thank you

Babs03 Sun 12-Jan-25 13:05:28

Are the fake hugs and sleeves rolled up that get to me, it looks rehearsed, but then again Meghan is an actress. And I know that Harry is primed as a Royal to respond to disasters but the Royals at least know to take a step back and simply offer their condolences.
Then again I think all A listers are acting a bit fake, perhaps is an occupational hazard.

They just can't win. As Sago says, damned if they do, damned if they don't. The Paparazzis were everywhere, like leeches, looking for photos to sell out of those people's misery, rich and poor- there is not way they could turn up and be 'discreet or anonymous'- that was just not going to happen.

Good for them for actually supporting people and doing something- rather than sit on GN and pour scorn.

Yes, I agree with this. Whilst they are not my favourite couple, it does seem as if they always will be, as Sago says “damned if they do, damned if they don’t”

DamaskRose Sun 12-Jan-25 13:19:47

Would they really have been “damned” if they hadn’t turned up? It wouldn’t have occurred to me that they would, anymore than anybody else. Presumably there were many people there trying to help who didn’t get any publicity.

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 13:30:43

This couple thrive on publicity, they leave this country, royal
duties, fine. But no, they make tv interviews and lie, how can
they be trusted?

Simple fact, we have different standards of honesty which is causing me being accused of hating, nooo, I hate lies and the harm they can do, this couple are strangers to truth

MissInterpreted Sun 12-Jan-25 13:38:01

If they are helping, for whatever reasons, does it really matter?

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 13:42:57

Yes it matters, to use suffering of others for one’s own glory is
wrong, well it is for me

I'm sure those receiving the help will be glad of it, no matter the motives behind it.
William and Kate have previously been accused of using visits to foodbanks as publicity stunts - what's the difference with them?

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 13:51:37

Have they made countless tv interviews and lied ?

MissInterpreted Sun 12-Jan-25 13:59:34

Anniebach

They've given plenty of interviews over the years, I'm sure. Have they lied in any of them? I don't know and I don't particularly care either. It doesn't affect me in any way. I just find it a bit odd that some people seem to have double standards when it comes to comparing H&M and W&K. One pair can do no right, it seems in some people's eyes - while the other pair can do no wrong.

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 14:03:15

I don’t know who W&K are

MissInterpreted Sun 12-Jan-25 14:03:48

William and Kate...

Indeed.

I can't work out how their visit is any different to any other couple visiting to comfort and help. For example, don't we all donate soup, bread, biscuits to warm spaces at Church during cold weather?

No difference.

Christian kindness.

Smileless2012 Sun 12-Jan-25 14:04:52

I don't suppose they'd have been damned if they hadn't turned up DamaskRose. They're not so important that anyone would have asked 'where's Harry and Meghan' and I agree about plenty of others being present whose help wasn't publicised.

It was like everything else they do, a publicity stunt and like so much of what they do, looks to have backfired.

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 14:05:11

This is tedious,

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 14:06:33

Sorry ‘Smileless’ my comment on tedious was no in reply to
you

vampirequeen Sun 12-Jan-25 14:13:02

Cut them some slack. At least they took useful stuff with them.

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 14:21:12

Less than 12 months ago they were telling the world of the evils
of social media, she hugged the bereaved mothers who children had committed suicide, Harry spoke of being ‘First Responders’ , I find this abhorrent , I accept some do not

Smileless2012 Sun 12-Jan-25 14:25:47

That's OK Annie smile.
