In the picture I saw of them they were in jeans and ball caps, I doubt anyone apart from 100s of TV cameras even knew they were there.

It is not what you do, but the way that you do it, and yes, fame and celebrity can give you leverage. BandAid raised £millions for famine relief, aand other well known groups and individuals have done similar things.

But, celebrities, generally know better than to drop into somewhere glad handing people when a crisis is at its height.
What the Duke and Duchess did was the equivalent of dropping buy Grenfell towers at the height of the fire and glad handing the firemen and the building's traumatised residents.

Yes, royalty do visit catatstrophe sites, but not during the event but at a time carefully arranged for when it will cause least disruption and usually at the invitation of those involved.

I don't I support them. I merely see no reason to be upset at their actions, helping in a disaster. I find it a kind endeavour.

If you read Spare, I did, the overall feeling is one of being constantly second best, just because of the order of birth. I can see how this could be painful, feeling that your sibling will always be deemed to be so much more important. And it puts pressure on the family how to handle it too.
Perhaps Harry feels he is trying to do better by his own children. The sad thing is that if Harry had stuck around longer, he might have discovered that his brother and wife are at pains to ensure this doesn't happen to their own children in the future, and the pressure would be off everyone.

Oh, I doubt many Gransnetters are in a position to send aid to the USA, however sorry they feel for those people (and believe me, I do).
After all, the world's wealthiest billionaires are resident there and could pay the cost of rebuilding homes for poorer residents without making much dent in their wealth.

If H&M had ‘stuck around’ longer, I think things would have worked out better for them.

Covid came, which rather put the kibosh on all their original plans in the USA. If they had been here, and not flounced off, in lockdown they would have had quite a breathing space and a degree of privacy away from the usual royal engagements.

Given Meghan a chance to settle in.

And all the fuss about Archie not having a title. If they had held their horses, that issue would have been resolved upon the Queen’s death. (Although he could have had an Earldom in the meantime, which wasn’t good enough).

And then last year, with the King’s and POW’s cancer diagnosis, they could have stepped up and made a real contribution and endeared themselves to the public.

But no, Meghan just couldn’t wait, could she?

Which is why they are in a sort of limbo, neither royal nor private citizens.

One thing that really gets me is that, whenever there is a dreadful crisis somewhere, certain royals think it would be appreciated if they go to the place ‘to show support’. So the town council etc have to move heaven and earth to accommodate them swanning around, while at the same time trying to deal with the crisis. I remember first noticing this with the dreadful Aberfan situation in 1966. I seem to remember the Queen held back, so as not to intrude, but was heavily criticised for it. They can’t do right for doing wrong and, like them or loathe them, there will always be someone who finds fault whatever they do.

I should have said Aberfan ‘disaster’ not situation. Apologies to all who suffered, and are still suffering the effects of that.

The press are usually at fault when incorrect information is given, I find. On the odd occasion I have been featured in a newspaper (because of my job) I have almost always been misquoted. You learn to say very little after a while.
