I often use it to acknowledge a message that doesn’t require a reply.
Why is it aggressive? What’s aggressive about it?

Perhaps the short-sighted have difficulty distinguishing between a thumb and a middle finger?

Or has the sign been used sarcastically, so it is now understood as an ironic HA-HA-HA?

I refuse to participate in this "woke" nonsense. I will continue to use the thumbs up as an affermative response and if someone does not like it, tough, they are not worth my time

Yes I do remember NanKate. It washed over me too.
I compare my 18 year old self with my granddaughters of that age. I do think we were more innocent, far less worldly. Gentler times.

I use it regularly and ti my DGDs and will carry on doing so. Woke can do what it wants, but I for one will not succumb.

It's only aggressive if someone takes offence. Offence cannot be given, only taken and therefore if 👍 offends anyone it's their problem not mine. So I'll carry on giving the thumbs up. We do appear to be breeding rather a lot of snowflakes these days!

"Wokeness" is not about "being nice" even though this is most people's understanding of it. It is about language control* and emotional control. Hope that helps.

"Wokeness" is not about "being nice" even though this is most people's understanding of it. It is about language control* and emotional control. Hope that helps.

Yes, I get it that for example changing gendered words like chairman or fireman is contested, and words that are accused of being racist are contested as "woke" as words do have power and emotion,

This debate has to do with wokeness just as much as the claim that 👍 is now perceived/claimed by some to have a different meaning.
It’s another example of people using a word or symbol in a different way and expecting others to accept that they are right.

It is not 'woke' when the meaning of words/emogies/etc. change.

The definition of woke: Aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).

This USA slang word has been used by many incorrectly to refer to anything and everything they disagree with.

Most of the time I just ignore the current trends.

This is one on those “urban myths” so it didn't wash over you…..the cabin boy was called Tom. There was also never a character called Seaman Stains wink 👍🏻^

While I agree that this is all very silly - I certainly still use a 'thumbs up' and have never heard that it is considered aggressive, please don't use the word "woke" in this context - that IS aggressive. Woke has a particular meaning ... it means being aware or socially/culturally well informed. I for one am very proud to be Woke!

"Woke" simply means being sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. It isn't a bad thing!

I use it and they can shove that idea right up their kilts!!! Annoyed!!!

I obviously lead an isolated life! I "woke" up yesterday morning my only use of that particular word and I will never get in trouble with emojis as I haven't the foggiest how to attach them and not terribly interested!!
