Yellow weather warnings - sensible precautions or scaremongering?

Just that really.
I find I am worrying myself sick over fetching GD on Friday after school to stay with me as I am taking her to “Ballet Shoes” at the National Theatre on Saturday.
Worrying now about trains being cancelled, as I decided not to drive to Birmingham and back in one afternoon, worrying about delays on Saturday.
I could not bear to disappoint her. This is a special occasion for her - a birthday present from me - and the tickets were not cheap - plus it was the only date that suited us both for a matinee.
So I looked at the more detailed local forecast for Friday and Saturday and it doesn’t look too bad at all - but all this talk of 90mph gales is giving me sleepless nights.

In our small island, the disparity in the weather is staggering,

It certainly is.

I sometimes make a journey of 30 miles, round trip.
Last time I made it a couple of weeks ago, the weather changed quite a bit, about 6 times.

I can vouch for the fact that there are power cuts in Cumbria!shock

In our small island, the disparity in the weather is staggering, commiserations to those who are being battered. I've just come home from a supermarket shop, here in my corner of the south east it's now calm, normal day, hardly any wind, it was a bit wilder earlier.

Not too bad here in Devon. I've seen worse.
Hope everyone in the danger zone stays safe.

Even if we'd wanted to go out today, we couldn't. Roads blocked. Schools and workplaces closed. Local supermarkets all closed. I've never seen anything like it.
Just off to empty out the various buckets I've got to catch the water that sprays in round the windows ( which have all just been expensively checked over and sealed!!). I foresee trouble at the next residents meeting.

Allira Fri 24-Jan-25 17:21:57

It sounds horrendous, Aveline.
Hope you're staying warm, if damp.

It wasn't so bad here either, Storm Darragh was worse.

Same here, rain this morning but then quite a nice day if a bit windy.

The emergency services, utility engineers and essential staff who work in the conditions we experienced today are second to none. Our power was out for a mere four hours which was amazing given the conditions.

ViceVersa Fri 24-Jan-25 18:55:25

That's good to hear, OldFrill. Thankfully, our power has remained on, although the lights have flickered a good few times. Large tree has been blown over right across our back lane, although luckily it's a bit further down from us so we could still get out if we needed too. Neighbours further down are going to be stuck in until they can get someone with a chainsaw to deal with it.

We ve had nothing here in East Anglia just ordinary windy winter days with some sunshine and blue skies

RosiesMaw2 Sat 25-Jan-25 07:59:41

I hope nobody suffered any damage, or even worse, injury yesterday and that this particular storm has blown itself over the horizon.
All my travel plans went well, GD is here with me and we are off to London and “Ballet Shoes” later this morning 🩰

Aveline Sat 25-Jan-25 08:13:24

It was lovely to wake up this morning to peace perfect peace. No more howling winds battering the building. Phew. Just the damage to deal with now.

Marydoll Sat 25-Jan-25 08:27:25

Enjoy the ballet Maw and safe journey.

Unfortunately, we have thousands of pounds of damage to deal with this morning and carnage in the garden to deal with. 😔

Unbelievable!! Now it's snowing. Not forecast at all. Get a grip Met Office angry

Marydoll Sat 25-Jan-25 08:39:42

It was predicted here in Glasgow, so the Met Office got it right!
We had a covering of snow during the night.

It’s been reported several times this morning.

Not in this part of town, Aveline Your head must be above the snowline.

Elegran Sat 25-Jan-25 09:17:38

But there was a good frost earlier on the flat roofs I can see from my bedroom window. Bedroom was rather chilly too - unheated apart from the residual heat that comes up from the livingroom below it. Cosy when I'm actually in bed

Mollygo Sat 25-Jan-25 09:24:55

Marydoll
sorry to hear about the damage.
It was frightening here, but we are unscathed, except for some very dirty windows. The rain and wind must’ve been carrying a load of dust with it.

Enjoy yourselves, hope the weather is as lovely there as it is here 🌞

Oh dear, Marydoll
Hope you're insured and that the company is helpful. Our neighbours had the same with Darragh and the insurance company were very prompt in clearing up the fallen tree at least.

Snow was certainly forecast for Scotland today, not a red /amber/yellow warning though.

Marydoll Sat 25-Jan-25 10:45:55

DD and SIL have just left. They came down to see if they could help. I sent them home, because they live higher up in a village and it has started to snow. DD has just sent pictures of their garden, with a covering of snow.

At least the roof is OK, that was my main worry.

Family in Donegal without power since yesterday early morning

ViceVersa Sat 25-Jan-25 11:18:40

Sorry to hear about your damage, Marydoll, hope you manage to get things sorted out with the minimum of fuss. OH has just been out with his chainsaw to help the neighbour further down the lane who was blocked in by the fallen tree. Two other neighbours had said they would help him, but then didn't bother to turn up. Maybe the snow put them off...
