Not a food item but I still miss Vitapointe hair conditioner. Applied to dry (not wet) hair. My Mum used to use it and I did too, until it disappeared from the shops. Loved it, it was really effective in making a big difference to dry, frizzy hair. Any grans out there found a good substitute?

curds are simple to make and the flavour can be anything you like, orange, lemon, lime etc
i used to like the bars of chocolate that were milk tray assorted centres yummy
ice cream birthday cakes very handy
pots of dried veg ideal for adding to casseroles etc

They don't have them in my Tesco's. However you have reminded me about tinned garden peas, and tins of mushy peas so I have added some of both to add to my power-cut cupboard, to heat up quickly on the camping stove with the tins of stewed steak and chicken in white sauce when there is no electricity.

Looked surprise peas up online and sainsburys and Tesco have them. Joke. What do you get from surprise peas? Wet legs!

My mother used to use that LMP product, with a little capsule of ‘lemon’. Must say I do prefer making it from scratch, even if it’s a bit of a faff - so much nicer, plus it uses both the yolks and the whites of the eggs, plus the zest and the juice of the lemons. The lack of waste pleases me!

It was Greens who made the lemon meringue pie mix and you can still buy it online - not sure if any of the big supermarkets sell it as I've never really looked for it.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before but I used to make lemon meringue pie using a packet mix for the lemon filling - powder plus a capsule of lemon syrup. I think it might have been made by "Royal" or something like that.

Does anyone know if this product still exists and where it can be bought?

I have in the past tried to make the lemon filling and it comes out too sour and not of the same, slightly jelly-like, texture of the packet mix.

Spangles were nice and I don't know why they were phased out - and Corona fizzy drinks. Corona lorries used to come round when I was young.

Not a food item, but I wish I could get hold of some Vim or Ajax.
I know i's quite abrasive but sometimes you need something more abrasive than Cif.

And pudding rice is also hard to find, my Tesco doesn’t have it.

It’s usually shelved with rice pudding, not with other rice. At least in supermarkets around here. I had to tell a Swedish friend’s son where to find it, after he complained that he couldn’t find the right rice for their traditional ‘rice porridge’ at Christmas.
Though having said that, risotto rice makes a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Some modern parents are more draconian than previous generations regarding sweet treats.
My two year old has not eaten any products with extra sugar: she eats only fruit and natural yoghurt.
The four year old and the six year olds eat similarly.
Grandma is the sweet treat " pusher"!

I am still looking for ground rice. Tesco is supposed to sell it but I can’t see it on the shelves or in any other supermarket.

I think rice flour is the same as ground rice. But I don't know what sort of rice would be in the various different sorts of rice flour.

I don't think they are exactlythe same. Rice flour is very fine, like cornflour. I use rice or potato flour to thicken some sauces (like sweet-and-sour) as they dissolve in water, unlike wheat flour. Ground rice is coarser, more like semolina, and is still grainy when made into a milk pudding.

mrsmeldrew the children today would manage very well but with so much temptation from friends etc it would seem cruel! And they’d be seen as the “odd one”.

Kids today are not another species (though it can seem they are) I suppose you just have start as you mean to go on..if you believe it to be right🙂

I bought pink blancmange off Amazon. I don’t like blancmange but it makes a nice pink custard just like was served for puddings at school dinners! Goes well with jam and coconut sponge pud.

As a child I was permitted one chocolate treat a week and I always chose Frys Chocolate Cream, it was good for eating slowly.

I have two jars of unopened Rose's Lemon and Lime marmalade. However, still sold in supermarkets.

Goodness, how would children nowadays survive on one sweet treat a week?

Does anyone remember Virol? I loved it . Wish they still made that. I ate spoonfuls at a time.

Oh I loved Virol too - my mum used to give me that and Haliborange tablets!

Has anyone seen Greens Lemon Meringue Pie mix.

Recipes !

No one mentioned Robertsons. Their lemon curd (and seville marmalde) is the very best.

DH loves Wright’s Coal Tar. His next mission is Lifeboy soap. Was it wrapped in red paper?

Well I have just found Greens cheesecake mix on Amazon but does anyone know if any of the supermarkets still sell it? Also does anyone know where to buy quick gel? (Again Amazon have it but I don't really want to buy multiple packs! Thanks in advance.

Sorry everyone! I seem to have repeated myself! That’s what comes of writing over two days. I forgot to read what I’d written before!

Years ago, my mum made something called ‘caramel pudding’. It was made exactly the same way as blancmange and looked the same. It firmed a skin when cool, just like b’mange. My mum used to grate Cadbury’s Dairy Milk over the top. The thing was, it had the most amazing (in my opinion) flavour which I have never tasted since. Caramel pudding when I google it now is a slimy, for want of a better word. It neither looks nor tastes anything like the Caramel pudding I remember, which, as I said looked like blancmange. I think it was made by Peek Freans but can’t be sure.I would give a lot to be able to find this again.
Does anyone else remember this? Better still, does anyone know if it’s still sold anywhere?

Was it made by Greens?

It was like a creme caramel but larger, not so dense. Now called Sweet Carmelle but I haven't bought it for many years.

I can’t remember who made it but I’d give a lot to find it again. The one you pictured is the normal ‘slimy’ crème caramel that I hate. (It’s wet and nothing like blancmange). As I said, the caramel pudding I remember was exactly like b’mange to look at and was poured into our pudding basins once it had cooled a little. It then formed a skin and once completely cold, my mum used to grate Cadbury’s dairy milk chocolate over the top. It was heaven in a bowl!
