So pleased I found lemon curd and orange curd this morning. Thought it was long gone. So pleased only wish I could find Milo drink

Aldom Sat 25-Jan-25 11:57:04

I've not seen orange curd, but perhaps that is because I have not been looking for it. However, lemon curd has always been readily available in both Sainsbury and Waitrose. I'm in a small town in Oxfordshire.

I've always seen lemon curd widely available in the shops - not so much orange curd, although I have seen it too. Our local Asian food shop sells Milo drink.

Lemon curd is available in M+S, Morrisons, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. I’ve only seen Orange Curd in speciality shops though.

Poundland had bars of Fry's Peppermint Cream at Christmas. And they sometimes have Paynes Poppets.

They're a blast from a very distant past.

Tescos sell Milo. My DH loves it.

The likes of B&M and Home Bargains often have both of those. I got a box which had the Fry's Cream, Peppermint Cream and Turkish Delight in it.

Cherry curd is divine. It tends to be sold in gift shops (eg NT ones) rather than supermarkets, or is available online with prohibitive postage costs, so I buy at least two jars when I see it.

What I would like to see again is Surprise peas. They were very small bright green dried peas (not the split kind you use for pea soup, but whole and the colour of frozen garden peas). They came in foil packets I think, and our local Co-op (long since gone) used to sell them. I liked them in casseroles, as you could put them in with the rest of the ingredients and they didn't spoil by being overcooked.

Doodledog Sat 25-Jan-25 13:40:23

Or was it Sunrise peas?

maddyone Sat 25-Jan-25 13:43:23

I don’t know Doodledog, that’s a new one on me.

I was very happy to re-discover milk in returnable glass bottles.
It has to be delivered by a milk person as I don't think shops are allowed to stock it.

I used to hate accumulating cartons or plastic bottles.

I got one too. I couldn't work out which one to eat first!
Do you remember the one with different flavours in each section?

Surprise peas, I remember them.

Lime curd was lovely, especially in a courgette and lime cake but doesn't seem to be widely available now.
I hope orange curd is still available too.

Yes, was it called something like Five Centres? It was lovely too.
Oh, and in answer to Doodledog, Aldi occasionally has cherry curd in - but it's one of their 'middle aisle' specials, so it only appears from time to time. I usually buy a few jars whenever I do spot it. I think they usually have a passion fruit curd at the same time.

Doodledog Sat 25-Jan-25 14:04:43

Thanks, I'll look out for Aldi cherry curd.

If anyone spots Surprise peas, do let me know? Particularly if they are available online. I often think of them - maybe they'd be disappointing if I found them, but I found them really useful back in the day.

I adored Milo as a child. There was something different about the taste that I can’t suss out or describe. My Welsh Nan always made it for me when I holidayed with her. Your post brought back happy memories!

Before lockdown my daughter managed to get me and her father added to her milkman’s round. It meant we could get all the other things he delivers, too. Although the milk is very expensive compared to the supermarkets I said at the time that I wouldn’t stop using him when the pandemic was over.

I have happy memories of Surprise Peas. My dear mother in law used them in the 1960's, before the days when people had freezers in the home.

Still available in Australia, apparently!

Yes I remember both the ordinary white inside the frys chocolate creams but then the one our family had - as there were 5 of us were the different flavours for each bit so
coffee, orange, white, strawberry . think they were right but cant remember the other one. Probably mint I would thing. My favourite has it has every remained - was the coffee bit
Do your remember also I think it was called Neapolitan ice cream and it was white - vanilla , pink - strawberry/ - and a green colour but can remember the taste of that one.
The idea was to have wavers and cut a slice across all three flavours, but of course we awkward ones preferred to cut it the other way so we wach got the flavour we liked!

Usedtobeblonde Sat 25-Jan-25 23:11:07

I remember surprise peas.
Tiny shrivelled green things which magically puffed up when cooked
I remember them as being delicious when frozen peas were
not yet available.
I had forgotten all about them.

Rosie51 Sat 25-Jan-25 23:55:30

I never bought or used Surprise peas but definitely remember there was such a product. If I may lower the tone I still remember the joke "what do you get from Surprise peas in winter?" Answer"Chapped legs" Sorry and I'll get my coat....

If I see them I'll definitely buy some and give them a try.

Doodledog Sun 26-Jan-25 00:31:54

grin

I'm pleased I haven't made them up.

I remember eating those at the cinema. I think the green was pistachio. It was my favourite bit.
