'To forget would be not only dangerous but offensive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time'"

Elie Wiesel

It's a poignant day for so many reasons.

Just thinking, this will probably be the last time that Holocaust survivors come together to tell their stories of Auschwitz.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Eighty years on, and what has the world learned?

Redhead56 Mon 27-Jan-25 09:29:38

That the human race is its own worst enemy.

Indeed Redhead56

Israel's President Natanyahu will not be able to attend the commemoration of the 80th anniversary in Poland.

We must never forget.

BigBertha1 Mon 27-Jan-25 10:15:32

Someone said to understand the present we must look to the past.

I find the fact that a lot of young people are not aware of the holocaust and cannot name any of the camps pretty scary.

Events in Europe now, the rise of the right, inflation, views on Jews and Muslims, not to mention women have all been seen before. I worry for my grandchildren and adult children, as I am sure we all do. What a sombre thought for the week.

Shelflife Mon 27-Jan-25 10:31:55

Sallywally, I agreed with all you 'say'
The Holocaust and other atrocities must never be forgotten and should be taught in schools. I took worry about the world my GC will be in!
The rise of the right is indeed great cause for concern, anti semitism is on the rise, Muslims are targeted and yes, women need to be on their guard. The older I get the more worried I become !

Shelflife Mon 27-Jan-25 10:32:36

Ignore the ' took' !!

maddyone Mon 27-Jan-25 10:35:17

Nothing, it seems.

Lest we forget, I cannot imagine any Jewish person ever ever forgetting, and we should all remember.

The Holocaust is a compulsory part of the history curriculum in England and Wales. It's the only historical event that's required to be taught in the national curriculum.

Born a Jew, died with a number tattooed on their arm,

TerriBull Mon 27-Jan-25 11:04:20

I do agree we should never forget, such a stain on humanity. I visited Israel back in the early '80s and always remember a group of older people on an adjacent table, beach side restaurant, their tattooed numbers, clearly visible. The horrors they survived.

On Amazon there is a film called "The Zone of Interest", which is about the Commander of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoss and his wife, who were living in a cocoon of domestic bliss, raising their 5 children right next door to where thousands of fellow citizens were being systematically murdered. What bloody awful people, how did they ever become like that (not their children, they didn't know what was going on)

I abhor the re-emergence of anti semetism after all the historical ills that have been heaped on the Jewish peoples and now to conflate peaceful Jewish communities here and in other European countries with the ills being meted out to the Palestinians by Netanyahu's government.

My 15 yr old grandchildren are full aware of the atrocities.

It's hard to imagine what those poor people went through. I was born just after the war ended but I will never forget.

J52 Mon 27-Jan-25 11:39:21

Anyone who feels that they, or GCs need more information can look at the Holocaust Educational Trusts website. It is a charity we support.
It was an atrocity that should never be forgotten.

Apologies Katek I didnโ€™t see that you had started a thread about the holocaust when I started the Auschwitz one.
