Well my sister met Ronnie Corbett and several other celebrities at a golf fair many years ago. She said Ronnie was delightful, friendly to everyone. Jimmy Tarbuck on the other hand....

Kate1949 Fri 31-Jan-25 12:25:09

I think Pledges Pickles was in Nearest and Dearest Miss A.

Boz Fri 31-Jan-25 12:29:04

The thing about celebrity status is that it can get you down.
A friend had a contretemps with Patricia Routledge when asking her to speak at her local WI. PR gave her short shrift and who could blame her because she probably got this kind of stuff all the time and it gets wearing.

Thanks Kate.
I wasnt sure as I think I must have been really young when it was on, but then I don't know how I got to see it.

I used to like Alf Garnet, too.
With Una Stubbs in it.

I used to love Ever Decreasing Circles from the 1980 - with Richard Briers, Penelope Wilton, Peter Egan plus the neighbours Howard and Hilda in matching jumpers.

I also liked 1990s sitcom Waiting for God set in a retirement community where the residents engage in a battle of wits with the slimy manager, Harvey. Graham Crowden was great as the subversive Tom as was Stephanie Cole* as the grumpy retired journalist Diana.

*It is really strange looking back to realise Stephanie Cole was playing a retirement home resident in her late 40s!

One I loved as a child was ‘The Rag Trade’. With a very young Sheila Hancock and Peter Jones with Miriam Karlin. All set in a garment factory. That is going back many many years to the 1950s I think.

"Everybody Out " was Miriam Karlin's catch-phrase when she called them out on strike.......
It was a good one. I love a good sitcom, I've watched most of them but I can't remember their names , God help me.
Rising Damp was a cracker.......

That was Till Death us do Part with Alf Garnet. It was funny but wouldn't be allowed on TV now.

I really liked Dad’s army and Rising Damp. I also liked an American sitcom called Rhoda, was a spin off from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Was a sitcom called Just Good Friends in the early 80s, I loved it, especially because a very good looking Paul Nicholas was in it.

Babs03 Fri 31-Jan-25 16:38:25

Nearly forgot Porridge

MissAdventure Fri 31-Jan-25 16:49:15

How about 'Going straight'?
A spin off from 'Porridge, I think?
I loved the theme song.

And 'Citizen Smith' and 'Billy Liar'?
I must have spent my childhood glued to the tv!

Does anyone remember "Dear John"? It was on round about mid 1980s and starred Ralph Bates and Belinda Lang. John had been left by his wife and was living in a bedsit, and he joins the 1-2-1 singles group. It was written by John Sullivan and I thought it was far better than Only Fools & Horses, being both very funny and very moving.

Grandmabatty Fri 31-Jan-25 16:52:47

I remember Dear John. Ralph Bates died far too young.

Kate1949 Fri 31-Jan-25 17:09:49

My favourite was Man About The House with the lovely Richard O'Sullivan (I met him and he WAS lovely). It wasn't hilarious but when I look at the repeats now, it's the fashions and the fun. It's so nostalgic. I say to my husband 'I had a dress/shoes like that'.

Thepanaramawoman Fri 31-Jan-25 17:11:26

A Bit of a Do with David Jason! I remember exactly what I was doing while watching it - on my first maternity leave. 1989.

MissAdventure Fri 31-Jan-25 17:26:06

Would 'Bewitched' count as a sit com?
'Golden Girls?

MissAdventure Fri 31-Jan-25 17:27:17

Ooh, The ghost and Mrs Muir!

MissAdventure Fri 31-Jan-25 17:28:42

Rainbow1235 Fri 31-Jan-25 18:09:19

Another one showing on BritBox recently was Three up two down with Angela Thorne I also loved robins nest

Hellogirl1 Fri 31-Jan-25 18:11:55

I LOVED Love Thy Neighbour! Unfortunately it wouldn`t be allowed airtime nowadays, but was extremely funny.
There was another sitcom, called The Wackers, set in Liverpool, very funny, but taken off after only 2 or 3 episodes, there were a lot of complaints about it apparently.

Labradora Fri 31-Jan-25 18:23:28

Man About the House, Porridge and Citizen Smith. In Citizen Smith there was a very accomplished actress who played the mother of the girlfriend of Robert Lindsay's character " Wolfie". She always called him "Foxie" by mistake and that always amused me......
How could I have forgotten the brilliant Ronnie Barker in Porridge and Going Straight....
I also liked Penelope Keith in "To the Manor Born". Would you class Carla Lane's "Butterflies" as a sitcom ?
You have to view all the old ones in the context of their contemporaneous cultures or everybody starts getting their knickers in a twist.........

Gin Fri 31-Jan-25 18:28:42

I watched an episode of ‘Bread’ by chance recently. Loved the mother and the girls with their fashions and hairdos. I have seen many such sights in Liverpool on a Saturday night!

Rainbow1235 Fri 31-Jan-25 19:21:27

Loved bread used to fancy joey smile

MissAdventure Fri 31-Jan-25 20:01:41

As time goes by was good, and also the one with Paul Nicols in, I think his name was.
He had jilted his girlfriend st the altar, but they still loved each other..

A Bit of a Do with David Jason! I remember exactly what I was doing while watching it - on my first maternity leave. 1989.

I remember it very well, all weddings, anniversaries and christening parties with the same guests often swapping partners.Well written and funny.
Also Porridge which was wonderful both the script and the acting.I liked Ever Decreasing Circles, Outside Edge ( cricket)
Sorry ( language Timothy!)😄

Oreo Fri 31-Jan-25 20:13:06

I hadn’t heard of a lot of comedy series mentioned here so must be off to google.
