Hotel showers

I seriously think that I am either super stupid when it comes to operating hotel showers or that hotel showers are just really tricky to figure out.
Have been staying in a lovely hotel in Brighton, the shower has a monsoon head and a hand held shower head, two controls, neither indicating anything, I got in the shower and tried one control, nothing, tried the other and the hand held shower sprung into action shooting enough water outside the shower cubicle to soak one of my towels and the floor, tried to turn it off but then the monsoon head came on. Shouted fur DH who then came in and got soaked trying to sort it out. I eventually got a shower but then so did the bathroom and my DH 😂
Does anyone else have this problem?

My mother was always baffled by modern and/or foreign toilet flushes and hand basins. She never had a shower, always bathed.

I have had the shower problem, though, too. Sometimes they are just stuff and hard to turn - especially with wet and soapy hands!

But to me the picture instructions are so hard to understand I always end up with it cold and have to shout for help
Feel such a wuss I m sure my daughter thinks I have early onset dementia

Oh yes.........after numerous drenching situations and floor washing I am now very cautious in any other shower than our own grin

Last holiday found us with a shower that never got beyond freezing and no plug for the sink! We called the owner out twice to no avail as the shower did not improve and neither of the taps she supplied fitted. There were several other issues, such as front door popping open unless chained and various other safety issues in the garden. We left a discreet note about all this but got no response. Although it was very clean and convenient we won't be going back.

Have told this shower story before, but worth repeating here. This was in my guest bathroom. Had this all re-fitted when I first moved in. There is a double shower over the bath (monsoon and hand held). I never used this as I have my en-suite shower cubicle

However, when I was having my kitchen re-fitted, I was sorting out stuff to go to charity shop which would include my rubbish bin. This was a tall white one and the only way to wash the inside was to stand it in the bath and use the hand shower on it, which I did. Would say it was then early evening and I was pretty tired (getting my excuse in straight away).
Finished cleaning this, and just needed to leave it in bath to drain away, tried to turn off shower - nothing happened, turned it other way, nothing happened, concerned about wasting all the hot water, started to panic and in doing so dropped the shower head and it landed spray upwards, soaking me and bathroom floor.

By this time, I was in a real state - telephoned my Son in Law who lived nearby and, bless him ,he did come straight round to me, arriving me to find me soaking wet, in tears and shower over/in bath running as hot and fast as ever. I sobbed to him that I was trying to get hold of plumber and I doubted if he could do anything. He walked into bathroom and then came straight back out saying calmly 'all done'.!!!!

Turned out I had only been using the control which changed shower head, and not the one that turned the water on and off and heat controlled!!!!

Bet he dined out on that Mother in Law story for a long time.

I had one a few years ago where the entire set-up was old-fashioned looking, which was lovely, but it seemed to have worked on one line .... like instead of having one for hot and one for cold, they were both together.

I was totally unable to shower as the hot was scorching and the cold was freezing so I couldn't even have a cold shower!

I asked at reception and was basically told ''that's how it is here'' so each morning I had to drive to a 24/7 truck stop station and use the public showers!

I asked for a reduction in my payment to the hotel room for not being able to use the shower and was abruptly told NO!

I never ever went back! I contacted their Head Office but they never replied!

Another one, at a Premier Inn, the hotel and room were lovely and it was a glorious power shower, I loved it but sadly the plug hole drain part was blocked, it was a wet room type of shower unit with plastic curtains around and the water was thick on the floor and over the front part of the carpet at the front!

After dressing I shot down to reception where the lady was absolutely brilliant, I even offered to pay for the part of the carpet that was damaged! She immediacy got someone in there and I was told they won't charge me as it wasn't my fault, apparently that one had a history of blocking! They even moved me into another room and presented me with a little pack of After Eights!

@Franbern, Premier Inn are usually very good about these things. We stayed in a premier inn in Manchester when there was a rowdy hen party booked in. Was so much noise that we couldn’t sleep, we complained to the front desk the next morning and the member of staff apologised saying several other guests had also complained and that we would get a full refund for our one night stay.
We were very impressed.

My son has one of the newfangle showers. I lean in and try to get the thing working before stepping in. To me it's progress gone mad.

Babs03 Mon 03-Feb-25 12:35:58

We have an enclosed cubicle so water can’t go anywhere except in the shower pan, but many new shower units have a glass panel that imho - based upon experience - doesn’t stop water escaping onto the floor. Especially if someone - most likely me - is unused to the controls and water spurts suddenly in an unintended direction 😳

Babs03 I can see why you wouldn't have enoyed that - but I did! x

I would say you were super stupid. Hotel showers, no problem.

I would say you were super rude. Manners, no problem. For most.

If you’re trying to insult me, nice try but no cigar.
I’ve been insulted by bigger and better than you.

Early 80s, booked into newly opened Tropicana Travel Lodge, Las Vegas, other half stepped into bath and turned shower on - only he turned control the wrong way and the control shot off, and the water pressure was so high, it almost knocked him over. Within minutes the bath was overflowing (we were on the sixth floor) and bathroom floor was flooded. Rang reception, no one knew whereabouts the stop cocks were. The water flooded down to the ground floor- and hotel had to close for the night. All guests transferred to the Tropicana Hotel, on the strip, where we spent the whole week at no extra charge. Haven’t been back since

Every time! The worst ones are where there is a fixed shower door on a bath and a fixed power shower, so impossible to turn the shower on without getting into the bath. So you have to strip off first and are then blasted with cold water. I usually decide to have a bath instead.

creakingandchronic Mon 03-Feb-25 16:58:46

showers are the bain of my life! we usually stay in caravans or chalets and the darn things defeat me every time, no matter what I press turn or twiddle, darn thing never works properly.
they either scald me or have a freezing cold shock, one holiday we could not work out the shower for love nor money. it was strip washes for us!

mokryna Mon 03-Feb-25 17:06:34

I often have a hotel shower that has a fixed head to the wall.
I always think that it was a man who designed the bathroom.

hollysteers Mon 03-Feb-25 17:30:01

Who designs these things? Do they secretly enjoy confusing people with the excuse it’s streamlined?
Even a simple red and blue dot would help in many cases🙄

Hilarious 😆
Puts me in mind of Frank Spencer from ‘some mother’s do ‘ave ‘em’

I know I've had to call down to reception to find out how to turn on the shower!

One thing that bugs me in Europe is the lack of face cloths. How do people wash their faces? I end up using a corner of the hand towel.

In France the flannels are ‘gants’ , which you put on your hand.
Neither my DD nor DGD use face flannels, instead they use small washable cotton face pads which they bring with them.

What annoys me with hotel showers is that the hand held spray is always at the top of the rail, even in accessible rooms
I am not very tall so struggle to reach it. It’s not brain surgery to figure this out.

Trisha99 Mon 03-Feb-25 22:20:46

Not a hotel shower story, but our new neighbour, who has renovated (and then some) their bungalow, was telling us he’d had the new shower installed and he can control it from his phone! Why would you want to do this?

jocork Mon 03-Feb-25 22:48:03

In a hotel in the South of France the shower was over the bath but there was no screen or curtain. I hadn't used a bath in years but, worried about flooding the bathroom, I decided to have a bath and just detach the shower handset to rinse my hair. Unfortunately having had a nice soak I couldn't get up out of the bath - the reason I gave up baths years ago! I was on holiday with my teenage daughter at the time and fortunately the bathroom didn't have a lock so I was able to get her to help me up but she was rather embarassed by it all.

I'd probably cope better now as I've lost a lot of weight and am fitter generally, but I won't be taking any chances!
