After last night's awful events I feel relieved to have deleted my account.

Ilovecheese

If the aim of putting those pictures on to Mumsnet was reduce membership of Mumsnet, then they have achieved their objective.
But why join another site run by the same organisation.

Because you’re allowed to express yourself more freely on MN.

I like mumsnet and this won’t stop me going on to the site although this incident is horrible and hopefully a one-off.

It keeps me up to date with the young uns and it’s often very amusing as in a husband forgets to empty the dishwasher can receive a chorus of LTB (Leave the b****rd)😁

Smileless2012 Mon 03-Feb-25 12:27:03

How distressing for the MN members and the moderators.

Mumsnet is a fantastic site. Justine and all those involved are all lovely people but until they have a more robust system and new tech solutions you are stuck with me.

Nandalot Mon 03-Feb-25 12:33:01

About a month ago I came across an AI child porn picture on Mumsnet. I reported it nd it was swiftly taken down. I can’t remember what time of day it was. I don’t blame the site, just the sickos who get a thrill out of doing this.

Very happy to be 'stuck with you', however this site might be vulnerable too.

Could we please stop using the terms 'child porn' and 'child pornography' it is 'child sexual abuse' some people may think that's not important but it really is.

Babs03 Mon 03-Feb-25 12:44:03

Am afraid the estrangement support thread can get a rash of rather sick individuals who put awful comments on there and they tend to time it for the early hours when GNHQ are obviously not on duty so reporting it doesn’t work until they clock on for the day.
Am certain those posting pics on mumsnet timed it similarly.
These people are from the murky depths of the internet, horrible people, and sadly is impossible to police this effectively. Yet. Though am hoping in the future this will be policed and the culprits apprehended due to progress being made with software and ex-hackers etc., whose expertise is very much needed.

Agree totally.

Thank you @friedgreentomatoes2 and nanak54.

I don't think GN has had any incidents, have you? Certainly the site always runs smoothly and reminds me of MN in the early 2000s

I miss the edit button!

I got an account going with MN a couple of years or so ago, but soon deleted it!

A bunch of evil vindictive old bags sat around their cauldron casting spells and being really nasty to the few decent women on there.

I posted a photo of a cute little bunny, saying how adorable he is etc. and was immediately gunned down in a hail of bullets. I was told to go an kill myself.

I've not been back since.

Yes we need an edit button as of yesterday.

kingfisherfree Mon 03-Feb-25 12:55:18

@TheWeidoAgain59 yes they are not the most gentle bunch some of the time.

I am early 50s now and find I could do with a slightly less caustic conversational style when posting on sites. I find reddit less aggressive and that is saying something!

Exactly.
This is v important.
Some people may not realise but they need use the correct term.
It akin to the child prostitute slur.
I'm sure no one on here would ever use that term.
Although it was common currency until ? poss this century.
So it just needs a bit of effort to not put the words child and porn together either.

They don't have the proper procedures when things like this happen. They should have a team of people at night to tackle these problems sooner and more robust tech in place and procedures to stop people posting multiple photos etc

I pop in and out of here and the same with MN but fortunately didn’t see anything awful.
Any busy site should really have a few mods working a night shift, it could easily happen here as well.
I wouldn’t delete my account unless it happened repeatedly.

Indigo8 Mon 03-Feb-25 13:09:07

Are these real photos of actual child abuse or AI generated?
Extra worrying if the former but either way, it is still a disgusting thing to post on MN.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 03-Feb-25 13:11:10

It’s about time these trillion dollar tech companies, or even € and £ corporations develop an algorithm to stop this.

welbeck Mon 03-Feb-25 13:14:12

Let's be fair though.
MN has much more traffic than GN and so attracts more cranks as well as advertising ie revenue.
Thankfully I did not see the criminal postings last night.
But i was following an appeal to help find a vulnerable woman.
She was autistic non verbal and had wandered away from a theatre without coat phone money. Been out overnight.
Numerous MN were re posting this with photo and offering to go look around the west end and making other sensible suggestions.
Thankfully just before midnight the police contacted the OP that she had been found cold but OK.

There is much expert knowledge on MN that people freely share and general support and concern with practical ideas for anyone in difficulty.

I agree welbeck, although I’d be in favour of paid overnight moderation because as an early riser, I have seen some really heartbreaking and shocking overnight posts, including from very vulnerable people, and I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect volunteers to have to deal with sometimes dangerous situations for those involved.

This is an interesting point as a PP Nandalot mentioned this too and flagged it to MN. KS said they were going to crack down on AI CSAI and maybe there is loophole to evade prosecution atm?

NonGrannyMoll Mon 03-Feb-25 14:10:35

The reason I joined GN was that I found MN too combative for my lily-livered taste. I'm very glad I left, if child porn can get through their filters!
