Starmer boxed in by farmers in Milton Keynes today. 🚜

Apparently he was on site to view one of the ‘100 sites’ and the tractors blocked his exit, necessitating a helicopter landing to whisk him away.

Mind you, perhaps (probably) his transport was pre-booked anyway! Maybe.

What a ridiculous waste of time and energy. What exactly did it achieve? Did it stop other people going about their daily business?

Claremont Thu 13-Feb-25 17:51:12

Stopped traffic, ambulances, police, and more.

Green fighting for the planet would have been arrested and put in prison! The hypocrisy is staggering.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 13-Feb-25 17:51:18

I dint think so MayBee. I think it was just the farmers bring their protest about IHT under Keir Starmer’s nose. Awks for him though to be jeered like this.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 13-Feb-25 17:52:56

I don’t think so Claremint. That’s not what happened. It was on a new housing estate, not blocking arterial roads.

Churchview Thu 13-Feb-25 18:04:53

I wonder how many people know that IHT for farmers is 20%, still only half standard IHT.

Also, that a large number of the estates claiming agricultural relief IHT have not actually been making their income from farming in the five years before the claim.

Dr Arun Advani, director of Centre for the Analysis of Taxation, told the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee: "About 44% of the claims are from people you would think of as farmers.” The others, he said, are “a mix of people who own a house and some pony paddocks or who own land and let it out to a lot of people but are not involved in any farming in any way.”

Green fighting for the planet would also have been slated for using a helicopter with the accompanying pollution.

Claremont Thu 13-Feb-25 18:07:06

Of course we all know it, and they know it too. They are being manipulated by the minority of big, rich ones, the minority that will have to pay- quite rightly - and 50% less than all of us.

Really?
Are you sure you have your facts right?

Farmers are protesting all over Europe, including non-EU countries.

Something is radically wrong.

Yes we do.

No they are not

You make farmers sound like idiots. 🤬

Allira Thu 13-Feb-25 18:12:45

Dr Arun Advani, director of Centre for the Analysis of Taxation

Does that person know anything about food production and food security?

I doubt it.

Swiss farmers are protesting too over the vast increases in the price of fertilisers etc, which also affect farmers in the UK.
Do you think they have a point or that they are are being manipulated too?

What do you think might happen if the shops are empty of food as they are in Australia at the moment?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Feb-25 18:18:37

Unfortunately farmers have been taken for granted in the developed world for far too long.

I support them 100%

I meant how many of the general public know. Ordinary folk not associated with farming who are being whipped up by Farage and his ilk in order to promote their agenda.

Rula Thu 13-Feb-25 18:28:40

There was some incredible protests across Europe last year. Very little shown on MSM of course.

Rula Thu 13-Feb-25 18:29:52

Is Europe being whipped up by Farage?

Try researching farmers protests in the EU last year

Wyllow3 Thu 13-Feb-25 18:32:17

Its actually world wide protests, all the year.

Shops in Australia are empty of food?

What- all of them?

In the whole country?

I have lots of family there as well as friends on holiday and they all seem to be eating pretty well...

sarahanne Thu 13-Feb-25 18:33:13

I saw this had happened on the news.

Yep, big problems. And no, farmers aren't stupid at all. They most certainly aren't being manipulated.

Can you give a link to the source of this information please, as I've been unable to find any reports of ambulances , police and more being stopped by the protest? It may be you've found a reliable source but I can't find a single reference to any such disruption.

Wyllow3 Thu 13-Feb-25 19:00:45

The point about the world wide protests suggests food supply chains, supermarket domination, corporate buy up of land world wide (as in the article I posted) points to far deeper issues than IHT.

We've had so many farming threads about the many factors in the UK, but now realise that although there are differing styles of government the farmers are facing squeezes on prices world wide and at the same time people unable - or unwilling - to pay higher prices at supermarkets.

Piskey Thu 13-Feb-25 19:12:15

I’m trying to figure out the government’s mindset for this desperate drive to Net Zero.
The carbon footprint of the wood pellets delivered to the Drax Power Station are added onto Canada’s total. Think they are in the 20% + percentage.
Meanwhile we build ever increasing numbers of wind turbines ( no mention of the tons of concrete, thousands of gallons of oil to drive them, and the fact the blades are non recyclable. The same with solar panels which are covering good farmland , instead of using the millions of roofs nationwide. The cutting down of millions of trees nationwide.
It takes a particular warped mind- in order to reach Net Zero and No 1 in the world - for the current government who’s next step would be to stop the exports of any food/fruit/meat / animals (tax the farmer IHT ) and businesses of other products, plus sky high raises - Nic’s, business rates, energy and raising hourly rates of pay, etc leaving the U.K. at the mercy of the world for food, energy and other commodities.
Any sane person would think these were deliberate actions being put into place by a government that was gaslighting the population. I could be wrong and everything is hunky dory in the minds of the elite who rule us
