A 54 year old woman was visited by Police because she posted a criticism on social media about the the Labour politician who shared offensive messages on a What’sApp group. Should we be careful what we say on GN? 😬

All we've heard is this woman's side of events. The police will have a different version.

It is interesting how many times the free speech union win when it goes to the wire, almost as if the police etc havent a clue what they are doing.

Now that Apple have caved in to the Gov. and allow access to incripted information, the Police won't have to wait for posts to be reported by those who find them offensive.
But that's for another thread.

I think things are confused here:

Apple "won

The government wanted to access the very highest level of encryption Apple offers

which isnt used by the public generally or in the kinds of groups were are discussing here

and Apple responded by taking away that level of encryption in the UK. It's the kind of encryption used by terrorists, child abuse/pornography groups, and there is a useful thread where we discussed/debated it

Always the same line: Don't worry Dear, this won't affect you. Until it does.

Cossy I'm sorry but I find your post pf 12.20 difficult to understand.

The easiest way for you to find out about what happens when you say something against the zeitgeist is to look at LWS website. Click on live steam and listen to the ordinary women telling their stories.

Or listen to KellyJay Keen explaining how many times she has been arrested for saying on line and in person things deemed offensive by some.

There are many other cases such as Jamie Michael's hate speech case taken up by Toby Young's Free Speech Nation, which he won.

Please get your banner out soon, we all need your support.

I have read about this too. It would be laughable if it was not so serious. They will be knocking on my door soon probably. In my opinion Starmer is a right plonker and he should resign asap and let someone take over who has a brain! I did say in my opinion1 We will see if I am allowed to have one!

There are at least 5 examples of libel on this thread but as a supporter of free speech I have to let them stand grin

Ilovecheese Sun 23-Feb-25 12:33:00

I did think that was strange, I expected GB news to support the woman and not support the police

Not cantankerous at all. I won't take someone claiming something without evidence and the evidence has to be substantial and from different sources. GB 'news' and The Daily Mail are two cheeks of the same xxxx in my opinion and that's an opinion not a fact.

👏👏👏

According to the GB news website she had also posted racist messages and joked about a cycling campaigner being "mown down by a truck".

Sounds like a lovely individual.

Experienced police visits, loss of work, expensive court cases in order to be able to speak about issues.

I have experienced Police visits, and I was actually arrested back in the day, not anything to do with freedom of speech, but a misinformed report about me.

Happy to say released with no charge!

So I’m aware of the potential damage done due to spite or deliberate misinformation.

The police were very kind to me, but it was a bit unnerving!

No ilovecheese that was the labour mps messages according to the news report I read.

It really was badly written!

Galaxy Sun 23-Feb-25 12:29:00

Ok am going to have to shout. THAT WAS THE LABOUR MP.

AGAA4 Sun 23-Feb-25 12:28:37

It's the usual police bashing that undermines our society. Trump and Musk love this.

I suspect this had more to do with the police visit, but hey - let's not miss an opportunity to 'misunderstand' and have another go at the government?

nanna8 I don't know how it works in Australia, as it is so far away and I only hear second hand from my brother so can't really comment, but here the PM doesn't make decisions about who is visited by police. Nothing to do with him.

I am glad you havent experienced it cossy, lots of people in particular women have.

Sorry, I’m not firing on all cylinders this morning, experienced what?

Galaxy Sun 23-Feb-25 12:23:13

The problem for those of us who support free speech (not just the speech we like) is that our commitment to it means we dont report 'the offense' so those who do report hold the power.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 23-Feb-25 12:22:53

We do not know what she wrote. I do not think that she can be described as a reliable witness on this matter.
In short, I do not believe that she has not "edited" her version of events.
My former police officer friend was equally disbelieving.

Yes, it was looking that way😂

AGAA4 Sun 23-Feb-25 12:22:22

Police apparently have to respond to claims of harassment. It seems the woman had targeted this person several times. It's unclear what she had said.
