A 54 year old woman was visited by Police because she posted a criticism on social media about the the Labour politician who shared offensive messages on a What’sApp group. Should we be careful what we say on GN? 😬

I suppose it depends on what she said.

Grandmabatty Sun 23-Feb-25 11:41:25

Where's your proof?

Where's your proof?

I've just googled it - this is perfectly true.

Grandmabatty Sun 23-Feb-25 11:46:38

I repeat, where's the proof? No link given

Yes, 100%.

This reminds me of the SM posts during the riots. It's one thing to criticise a politician, but another to incite violence against them. We don't know what she said, and IMO it was very wrong of the papers to make this public.

If she has committed no crime (which, as I understand it, is the case) why should she have her business made public like this? I would absolutely hate that. If, like the people inciting violence in the riots, she is guilty of a criminal offence then she deserves to be charged. Politicians have been killed before now, and there has to be a crackdown on anything that might encourage that to happen again.

The article is there in today's online "Daily Mail" and yep....the police were breaching our British right to "freedom of speech". She didnt say anything derogatory imo on social media - just expressed her opinion. I did think "Why on earth are the police spending time harassing someone perfectly law-abiding - rather than chasing criminals?".

According to the GB news website she had also posted racist messages and joked about a cycling campaigner being "mown down by a truck".

Kandinsky Sun 23-Feb-25 11:54:24

I wonder what she said?
Some of the things that get posted on here ( & elsewhere ) about Farage & Trump are awful.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 23-Feb-25 11:54:30

It was on GBNews this morning. The woman said on FB (I don’t use it, I didn’t see it) that the councillors in Southport ought to stand down. Two policemen knocked at her door (verified) to caution her not to post such views in future. As GBNews commenters said surely the Police should concentrate their efforts on burglaries etc.

nanna8 Sun 23-Feb-25 11:54:33

Well what do you expect with that man in charge?

You do rather come across as a bit cantakerous!

No ilovecheese that was the labour mps messages according to the news report I read.

Are they really? What about the actions of these two?

That might put a different perspective on it! I was actually being a bit ironic

Galaxy Sun 23-Feb-25 12:05:19

That was the MP.

I think you probably know, as do many of us, that the police force and various officers are split into several sections, traffic police don’t deal with burglary, their domestic violence unit don’t deal with car theft etc etc.

I’d like to see what she actually wrote.

Along with freedom of speech, comes great responsibility.

People make mistakes, police do too.

Cossy Sun 23-Feb-25 12:08:38

Btw, I also think, given the events in Southport, it’s probably the location which triggered this and over zealous police (though someone must have reported her) attempting to quell any contentious posts in the same place as the riots started.

I’m a great advocate of freedom of speech.

You've read the article wrong. That wasn't her, it was Andrew Gwynne.

Good job you negated to name 'that man' nanna8, or our police might be on a plane and knocking on your door, double quick, before you can say 'free speech, wot free speech' šŸ˜‰ 🤣

I read the Daily Mail article in full last night, it fulminates full on. In the DM it was related to commentaries on the Tameside incidents,

Southport was not alluded to, so the GB report is somewhat confusing.

But

What was missing from the article in the DM was any record of what she had actually said/wrote.

Until and unless we know what it was, its impossible to assess.

Absolutely. How can anyone make any kind of informed judgement without the salient points?

Well done DM, half a story, designed to back up the rubbish spouted by Farage at CPAC, more ammunition for The Trumpy and his rich master, Musk.

Those who genuinely feel our freedom (of speech/actions etc) need to get themselves across to Russia/China/Korea and experience ā€œlack of freedomā€ directly.

Freedom of speech, freedom to peacefully protest, freedom to hold one’s own views/beliefs are so important to us in the UK, believe me if I genuinely believed these were being truly eroded I would out their marching with my banner, writing to my MP, lobbying parliament!
