Watching Gardeners World, what a load of complete rubbish!
What do others think please or am I just ratty?? 🥴

If I don’t enjoy watching something, I don’t. To continue to watch it and then moan seems rather daft.

Granmarderby10 Thu 20-Mar-25 22:23:58

Monty Don reminds me of my mums old window cleaner. It is that blue jacket thingy he often wears.
I haven’t really enjoyed it much since Alan Titchmarsh left.
Not as practical and too aspirational.

Also in his first foray at presenting Gardeners World, Monty said something to the effect of “people who rent there homes are unlikely look after their gardens” which got a lot of peoples backs up.
Did used to love it when Ground Force was shown just before it back in the day🙂

Ziplok Thu 20-Mar-25 22:25:33

Oh dear, I’m not sure what Monty Don, Frances Tophill, Adam Frost, Rachel de Thame, Carol Kline or Alan Titchmarsh has done to some of you when I read the comments made about them that some of you have posted.

They seem quite personable individuals to me (though I’ve never met any of them, of course, so can only judge them by what I’ve seen of them on the tv). They certainly don’t strike me as the unpleasant individuals some of you seem to think they are.

Their accents and background are what they are - all part of the rich tapestry of life here in the UK, and they shouldn’t be judged negatively for them, which I sense some of you are doing, sadly.

Well said, Ziplok, Casdon, Churchview and some other posters.

🤐 Oh Allira, ignore me, my mouth runs away with joy of typing!
Good advice, I will try, Ilovedogs

It always makes me smile when I hear the voices on old TV documentaries. At least we hear accents that are reflective of our different regions these days but there's still so much snobbery.

Listening to Mary Berry chatting to an old friend on a cookery/documentary show a while ago, Mary said, (in horror), “Oh goodness, I sound like the Queen!” when they were watching a very old show of hers.

And she did! Mary still comes across as a bit ‘posh’, but back then, she sounded unbelievably, well, stuck up, to be honest.

She has definitely changed her presenting voice and style over the years.

Allira Fri 21-Mar-25 10:58:43

Mary Berry is quite 'posh' but not a member of the aristocracy.

I do remember that when she was in hospital with polio as a young girl her father walked her pony in to visit her when the patients were allowed outdoors.

Oh Granmarderby10, That blue jacket that Monty has been sporting a lot of lately is in fact very on trend now!
It's called a French chore coat People in France pop them over their good clothes whilst doing their chores or pottering.
It's a bit like a poncy apron!
Chore coats are also popular in China but here in the UK they have become something of a sad fashion statement, particularly for those of a pretentious disposition. 🤔

Oh No! I’ve got a faded black one. I had no idea I’ve been wearing a pretentious fashion statement around Aldi. 😂

Or even a poncy apron!

You'll be going to Lidl in your pyjamas next 😂

Ps where can I buy one?

Ilovedogs22 Fri 21-Mar-25 17:01:04

well, if I was to be given the poisoned chalice of presenting GW,
(or so it seems, thanks to some of the comments. (Mostly mine!)
I wouldn't keep my ex-husband's name just because it sounds rather exotic. 🤔

Allira Fri 21-Mar-25 17:05:17

Well, I wouldn't go back to my birth surname.
Several people I know who are divorced keep their married surnames, particularly if they have children.

Perhaps I'd make one up. 🤔
Allira du Jardin?
Allira de la Main Verte?

merlotgran Fri 21-Mar-25 17:14:34

Ps where can I buy one?

I bought it in M&S about eight years ago because I thought it looked dead cool with grey wash jeans. 😂

Her ex husband was somebody else Ilovedogs22. She is still married to her current husband, whose surname is De Thame. I don’t care what surnames people use, however your criticism is unjustified in this case.

👍

Just looked - they're not cheap but they do seem to be trendy.

Ilovedogs22 Fri 21-Mar-25 17:27:33

Don't get me me wrong I love Chore jackets but they are
everywhere now, beloved by celebs & Love Islanders alike.
Even my dog has got one from the local charity shop, a bargain at only £2.50! Not his colour mind. 😉

Allira Fri 21-Mar-25 17:29:15

Well, I wouldn't describe another Gransnetter as that, Ilovedogs because it would be against guidelines but it is pretty obvious you have an aversion to the programme and anyone who presents it!

Is something a pretentious fashion statement if it’s the same thing you’ve been wearing for doing your gardening in for at least the last twenty years, when it wasn’t fashionable - because it’s a utility garment that fits the job you’re doing?

Ilovedogs22 Fri 21-Mar-25 17:40:42

Casdon, if I'm wrong about Rachel and her very exotic surname then forgive me, but are you so certain? 🤔
I'm off now to buy a chore jacket.

Yes, Casdon is correct, 100%.

very exotic?
How exotic? It's very unusual but not exotic.

I read an interview she gave after she returned to GW after she had breast cancer. She said then that she had two children with her first husband, and two younger children with her current husband, who is De Thame. I just checked to confirm this afternoon, and she is still married to him.

Woollywoman Fri 21-Mar-25 19:28:34

Anyone else think it was a better programme when it was half an hour? Apologies if this was already mentioned…

Ilovedogs22 Fri 21-Mar-25 19:40:31

Well I seem to have been corrected but I heard it from a university lecturer who taught on my horticultural design course.
She'd met most of the TV garden presenters & regaled us with her dealings with them. Some horrors amongst them too!
Anyway Rachel seems lovely, one of the more genuine one's along with Monty & Toby Buckland.
I just hope Rachel isn't on Gardeners World tonight, I don't think I could cope with it! Phew 🥴

Ilovedogs22 Fri 21-Mar-25 20:14:43

Don't forget Gardeners World is on tonight
I hope Rachel is presenting. 🤭

aggie Fri 21-Mar-25 20:26:04

It’s not on here I’m not happy ! We have daft men running about after a ball
