Am I being dim? Why would those who don’t like football want to know fixture times, and what has it got to do with Wetherspoons?

keepingquiet Mon 24-Mar-25 08:27:13

These posts appear regularly and are annoying. I think they should be blocked as they are nothing but advertising.

Mollygo Mon 24-Mar-25 08:36:50

Good advert for Wetherspoons, if you like football but have never been.
I expect regulars will already know, so yes, keeping quiet it’s just advertising.
Is it allowed?

At least the spelling is right now.

The information is useful for those who frequent Wetherspoons, but don’t like football!

I don’t understand why infoman is constantly being pounced on when posting about this!

kittylester Mon 24-Mar-25 09:31:36

I agree squiffy. Scroll on by!

I don’t see it as advertising. Infoman is letting folk know that branches of Wetherspoons will be wall to wall football this weekend and best avoided if you don’t like football.

As soon as he posts there are usually several posts in quick succession telling him it’s of no interest. I can never fathom why posters feel the urge to come on a thread that’s of no interest just to make a negative comment 🤷‍♀️

Was just about to post the same regarding it being useful to know if you were planning to go to one whilst football is on.

Squiffy Mon 24-Mar-25 09:44:20

Exactly, Kitty!

I wasn't 'pouncing'. I just don't know why it matters. If someone is a regular at Wetherspoons to the point where this might be of interest, they will know about the football, surely? It's not somewhere I visit, but I'm sure they will have posters or leaflets about it. Of course I could scroll past, but I wanted to know what the point of the thread was meant to be. Not criticising, just asking.

Also, telling people something framed as 'in case they don't want it' is absolutely a form of advertising. It's no different from saying that delicious cream cakes are available at half price at Gail's and saying the 'information' is being given to those who might want to avoid it as they are fattening.

Well, we are not ‘regulars’, but visit our local Wetherspoons every now and again and wouldn’t have a clue whether football was on offer or not. I’m sure the advanced warning will be appreciated by other people like us!

rafichagran Mon 24-Mar-25 12:07:35

Ah I don't mind these posts, it's not offensive and I know some people like sport.
Or he could just be winding some posters up. If not interested I scroll on.

Fair enough. But just as people can 'scroll on' rather than asking a question, punters can leave a pub and go elsewhere if they find there is a match showing when they get there.

Squiffy Mon 24-Mar-25 13:38:44

That’s true, Doodledog, but it’s nicer to know in advance!😀

Doodledog Mon 24-Mar-25 14:13:49

Indeed. 😀

I'm beginning to rather hope that is what he's doing. Don't the pouncers and objectors and grumpies know yet that they are quite amusingly predictable?

AGAA4 Mon 24-Mar-25 15:02:55

I will not go to Wetherspoons this weekend. Not that I ever do.

Just as Infoman is predictable?

Doodledog Mon 24-Mar-25 16:09:49

I was the first to post, and can assure you that I wasn't 'wound up', pouncing, objecting or grumpy.

I'm feeling grumpy now, at having to justify a perfectly innocent post which simply asked why people who don't like football would want to know that it is playing in Wetherspoons.

What about people who prefer to spend weekends in other pub chains? Are we going to get updates on whether the darts will be showing in Greene King establishments, or rugby in Fuller's?

Maggiemaybe Mon 24-Mar-25 16:58:17

I’m a bit baffled (NB not wound up, pouncing, objecting or grumpy
smile) because I didn’t think Wetherspoons showed sports, apart from major events like the Olympics.

So is infoman telling us where we can go to avoid the football? hmm

It’s on terrestrial TV, just in case you want to watch something else 🙂

With it being Mothers day,or is it Mothering Sunday, not sure which is now the correct term this coming Sunday. How would you feel if you took your Mum out for a meal and thought you were going into a dog free pub(Wetherspoons) and ended up in amongst a large amount of football followers?
Don't forget the clocks spring forward this Sunday,so one less hour to finalise your plans for Mum's day out.
