I haven’t watched Coronation Street for many years but when I did Julie Goodyear was a constant presence with her animal prints and all her make up.
Yesterday there were photographs of her in the media on her 83rd birthday.
She has Alzheimer’s and her H put the photos on to mark the day.
It was, to me, the cruellest gesture possible.
She looked absolutely dreadful.
No front teeth and so very old looking.
If my H had done anything similar I would have been devastated, fortunately she will probably never know.
It was not the act of a loving husband however he meant it to appear.

I understand others finding it unacceptable for themselves and that is a valid choice. What I don't understand is why anyone would think themselves qualified to judge that for someone else. Perhaps their own fear of such a photo being shared stems from knowing others judge by appearance despite not acknowledging they are themselves part of that problem.

Good post.

How about the choice of not hiding people away or not laughing at them? Why not say, " There's a photo of Julie on her birthday" and leave out the comments about her appearance. Where have the photos become a joke? Not on here, I hope.

Anniebach Sun 06-Apr-25 16:10:40

The photo became a joke when I asked a poster who said she had her photograph on Facebook when at functions, I asked
did she have teeth, reply was when she was gummy and her mother etc.

Why is the choice between hidden away and being on Facebook?

Actually, that's is not what I said at all, Anniebach although you are referring to my post.

I said:

either being hidden away as a source of shame for their families or laughed at by insensitive bullies if they are taken out for a happy occasion.

Exactly
I don’t understand how her husband thought he was qualified to judge how she might feel.
Perhaps those who support this are afraid of being seen as judgemental.

Luminance Sun 06-Apr-25 17:30:43

Mollygo how distasteful of you.

kittylester Sun 06-Apr-25 20:39:35

I expect her husband thought he could judge just because he is her husband and knows her better than we do.

I'm flipping sure my DH knows me better than anyone posting here.

karmalady Sun 06-Apr-25 20:55:39

Isn`t it lovely that some of us can see beauty in her photo, not a staged picture but a photo shared by a caring loving husband so that others can see what he sees. She did not need to be hidden in a cloud of make up with a wig and false teeth, she is as she is and as an old ill lady, she is still beautiful with a real smile

Galaxy Sun 06-Apr-25 20:56:56

My dh knows me fairly well, under no circumstances would I want him making decisions like that.

kittylester Sun 06-Apr-25 22:20:09

But he would be better placed than the people on here who are judging Julie Goodyear's husband.

lemsip Sun 06-Apr-25 22:35:34

as soon as I saw the photo of dear Julie I thought how thoughtless of her husband to put it out there, that was before this op appeared. Just because she wouldn't know doesn't make it alright.

I thought your post was distasteful and wrong, but you posted it.

Mollygo please engage with a real opinion you formulated yourself.

Not just beauty in her picture but beauty in your response to it.

Mollygo

Luminance, please accept that you are not omniscient.
I have already expressed real opinions that I formulated myself as you do rudely put it.

For you I will express them again.

^It is not the act of a kind, considerate person to post any photo of any person, in a public place, without their informed consent, regardless of how they look.

You don’t have to agree with me, any more than I agree with you, but you don’t have to be rude, though you seem to be.

Luminance Mon 07-Apr-25 11:38:49

Mollygo both of us are intelligent enough to know that you took my comment and twisted beyond all recognition. That is rude, responding to that is simple observation. As I said, formulate your own opinions and leave others opinions as they stand. Thank you.

Mollygo Mon 07-Apr-25 11:42:38

Both of us know that you lead the way in being rude. QED.
Go for it Luminance.

Luminance Mon 07-Apr-25 11:55:50

Good heavens. We are all adults. I am sure we can manage.

creakingandchronic Mon 07-Apr-25 12:17:18

I could not believe it was her I thought it was some sort of photo scam. she looks terrible. it did say that her husband wanted people to see what dementia is like which having seen the demise of my dear fil I can understand what he is on about. the general theme of the article was how much their relationship had changed how hard it was plus how the dementia charity helped. it did sort of give the impression he had had enough. quite worrying. I do think considering how much of a following she has and her glam past I think it was wrong to publish such a photograph. educating is one thing shocking is another one

Julie Goodyear's husband will have PoA so therefore consent.

Anniebach Mon 07-Apr-25 13:28:32

Her illness was made public in 2023 ,the same year as her house was sold

Mollygo Mon 07-Apr-25 13:38:48

I had POA for my Mum. That didn’t mean I did something I knew she wouldn’t like in her pre-alzheimer stage.

Noone except those close to Julie know what her thoughts would be, but many are quick to jump to subjective conclusions.

Mollygo Mon 07-Apr-25 15:33:44

Exactly OldFrill. No one knows what her thoughts would be, and unless you know, don’t do it.

Anniebach Mon 07-Apr-25 15:34:27

Not even those close to her know her now,
