I haven’t watched Coronation Street for many years but when I did Julie Goodyear was a constant presence with her animal prints and all her make up.
Yesterday there were photographs of her in the media on her 83rd birthday.
She has Alzheimer’s and her H put the photos on to mark the day.
It was, to me, the cruellest gesture possible.
She looked absolutely dreadful.
No front teeth and so very old looking.
If my H had done anything similar I would have been devastated, fortunately she will probably never know.
It was not the act of a loving husband however he meant it to appear.

Yes, I saw this too. It was cruelly unflattering.

Perhaps her husband doesn't see it - beauty is in the eye of the beholder perhaps.

Perhaps her husband wants the general public to see the ravages of dementia. Only those who have experienced this dreadful disease know what it can do to those who we love and care about.

Squiffy Thu 03-Apr-25 10:33:27

I saw the headline, but didn’t look at the photos. It seems a cruel and unnecessary thing for him to have done. Clickbait?

Dogmum2 Thu 03-Apr-25 10:36:12

I am in two minds with this one. It is also being reported that her family were/are ok with the picture being published.

Dementia is a horrible disease, sadly we have witnessed it first hand in its various forms.

The photograph is of her looking happy. Whilst it is not as we remember her, it is of her today. Would it be right to hide her away?

Like i started with, i am in two minds, on one hand it is nice to see her happy and on the other, as she isn't in a position to agree to publication, i wonder would she have?

Sparklefizz Thu 03-Apr-25 10:38:47

I saw it and thought it was cruel of him to publish it.

Oh! I hope that was the case ferry23,
Also in this superficial age, I think it's a good thing really to see life as it really is without it being photoshopped up to the eyebrows or possibly without them. 😊

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 03-Apr-25 10:46:02

I just looked up JG in Google and was shocked by the photograph uttb. Her husband ought to have left her some dignity in my opinion.

Calendargirl Thu 03-Apr-25 10:48:43

I saw it and was shocked, as they also printed a photo of her in her hey day, the contrast was so marked.

I think it was her missing teeth that made her look especially old and frail.

Cynical me wondered if the husband was paid to show them, whatever, I felt it intrusive and unnecessary.

TerriBull Thu 03-Apr-25 10:50:25

I do agree, I also thought it was very unkind. I haven't seen Corrie for years, but I do remember her as the larger than life, down to earth barmaid. Let's remember her like that, who would want a photo like that released to the public. Celebrities are mortals like everyone else, their private lives should be just that. Shame on her husband.

fancythat Thu 03-Apr-25 10:51:41

I was in two minds too.

Presumably they had their reasons.

Calendargirl Thu 03-Apr-25 10:54:01

£ maybe?

rafichagran Thu 03-Apr-25 11:10:16

I just looked this up, very sad.

Anniebach Thu 03-Apr-25 11:12:31

It’s so wrong, cruel , who has benefited from show her so ill ?

Esmay Thu 03-Apr-25 11:14:04

I thought that it was very cruel and thoughtless to publish a photograph of Julie looking so unattractive.
If she were in sound mind - she wouldn't have liked it .
Why hasn't he attended to her dental problem.
Dentists make home visits .
As my mother aged and lost her good looks I was always sensitive to her needs .

gillgran Thu 03-Apr-25 11:16:08

I saw this, Utbb, I didn't read the article, I assumed it was an upcoming story for the programme, highlighting Alzheimer's.
I'm sorry I hadn't realised that she was so ill.

pascal30 Thu 03-Apr-25 11:20:08

Oh my goodness.. she was always so glamorous.. maybe they need the money? as we know carers are very expensive..

Toetoe Thu 03-Apr-25 11:21:51

I've not seen this and also didn't know about her illness . Poor lady . I feel sad for her .

Esmay Thu 03-Apr-25 11:28:01

The photograph 4eminded me of the photograph of Christine Keeler before she died .
Typical Daily Mail .

hollysteers Thu 03-Apr-25 11:35:25

I thought the film ‘Iris’ was disrespectful to the memory of the great novelist Iris Murdoch. Her husband wrote about her undignified end for money and agreed to the film which dwelt on the utter degradation of it.
As she had passed, she had no say in it.

Dottydots Thu 03-Apr-25 11:36:33

Yes, I too was upset when I read the article and saw her photo.

Usedtobeblonde Thu 03-Apr-25 11:51:42

I have been trying to find a photograph of my late H just before he died.
He also was 83 and had had Alzheimer’s for about 10 years.
He was well dressed and groomed and had all his own teeth.
The only thing out of order was the blank look in his eyes as he didn’t know what was happening,it was Christmas Day.

Grandmadinosaur Thu 03-Apr-25 11:52:32

I’m in two minds about it is well being shocked when I saw it.

It brought back memories of when my mum died in early 2022. I live 100 miles away from her and due to Covid restrictions hadn’t seen her for about a year. I went to see her in the funeral home and was so shocked and upset with how she looked. It was nothing like how she’d want me to remember her but naturally I wanted to see her to say goodbye.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 03-Apr-25 12:12:44

I haven't seen this photo and am not going to look for it.
Some newspapers and websites look for the worst possible paparazzi pictures of celebrities to publish. As said above clickbait. Very cruel. But they obviously sell so some people must like seeing them.
Maybe the family need the money. Luckily she doesn't know. So sad.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 03-Apr-25 12:18:35

Wish I hadn’t looked, poor Julie.

Barbara Windsor’s husband didn’t post any unflattering pictures of her whilst in the throes of dementia.

Personally I think it is rather unkind, but hey ho not my decision to make 🤷‍♀️
