Such a disappointment

Had to sort through my two bouquets that I received for Mothers Day and throw half of them away. I do love fresh flowers but hate my sons wasting their money. I always tell them to try and get chrysanths or carnations that will last a while. All the roses I threw away were from M & S who I've had to complain to before. 😠

Whilst understanding the need by florists to cash in on this date on the calendar, I do not want my adult children spending their hard earned money in that way.

After all, do not need one day in the calendar for them to think of me, surely Mothers Day should be every day!!!

So, always send a message to all AC and AGC well before that date, saying that whilst I would still appreciate a card, please do not send gifts of any sort to me.

My Mothers' Day tulips lasted until this week, though a few are still blooming. I have a notion that they may have come from Aldi which I have always found a very satisfactory source of cut flowers.

M& S flowers for Mothers Day didn't last for 3 days. Very disappointing.

I once had a huge bunch of flowers from someone abroad, sent via Interflora, delivered from a local florist. I took them back to the shop the next day as they were almost dead. The florist actually said to me "I thought you wouldn't mind as they were from abroad". Not sure where the logic is in that statement as the flowers were only ordered abroad.
As for mother's day flowers, I went out to buy myself some the day before Mothering Sunday, to find that the price had gone up 400% since I was shopping a few days earlier. My vase remains empty.

Grandma dinosaur, I’m with you can’t stand chrysanthemums, I remember my mum getting several bouquets of them after my dad died and unfortunately that’s why I associate them with death won’t have them in my house. I know that it’s a ridiculous reason but 60 years later I still can’t abide them.

My Mothering Sunday flowers came from Marks and Spencer. They lasted ten days and were stunning.

I’d be so upset if I got a bunch of carnations! I only ever see those at the petrol station. I do love a big bunch of lilies or roses though. DD1 has sometimes sent these from ‘Flower Box’ when she is feeling extravagant - they are amazing with no greenery - just fabulous blooms.

I love carnations and always have, especially the clove scented ones. I can't have Lilies in the house as I have a particularly hairy cat who loves to lie in plants. My kids mostly give me something sweet, particularly different chocolates or Turkish delight direct from Turkey.

My daughter sends me fkowers from.Bloomin Wild and I'm never disappointed. This year it was tulips with bulbs attached so they can be planted when the flower dies, 2 years ago she sent me an orchid and it's onto it's third year of flowering now

GinJeannie Wed 09-Apr-25 15:28:47

Distanced daughter ordered me flowers from Bloom&Wild, the letterbox size gift. As we were away on Mothering Sunday she requested delivery on the following day, Monday. Unfortunately they were delivered on Sunday and the box stood in a warm sunny porch for 24 hours. Not good and the beautiful apricot and red roses suffered. Sadly an unusual disappointment from B&W.

My children usually just send me cards now, which I much prefer.
I'd previously tried subtly to stop them sending me roses as they do almost invariably droop their heads within a day or so.
I do like a big bunch of fresh tulips or daffodils though, all one colour. And alstroemerias last so well. My son gave me a philodendron plant last year and it's actually reached the ceiling so he won't need to give me anything for a while!
Our local supermarket is a Morrisons and they do have nice bunches of simple flowers, but any sort of bouquet is full of fillers and stale chrysanthamums.

I was given a bunch of tulips from the Co op a few weeks back and they were beautiful and lasted so well.
I like the idea of tulips with a bulb attached.

A friend gave me a bunch of flowers fromM &S, they lasted three weeks I do look after them change the water frequently and cut a snip off the stems regularly too. Tesco carnations last for weeks with the same treatment. Tulips last well if you put a two pence iee at the bottom of the vase.

The best and freshest flowers I have received came from Fentongollan farm in Cocrnwall. They only sell flowers in season, and they have Cornish cheeses and other products available to send with the flowers. Their freesias are fragrant in a way that 'flower shop' flowers seldom are.

I love Carnations but you can never buy a bunch of them, Pinks yes but not Carnations, they come sometimes in a mixed bunch.

love0c Wed 09-Apr-25 17:16:31

GrandmaKT Absolutely love that!

Rendella Wed 09-Apr-25 17:21:38

My daughter sent me a crocheted flower bouquet, which will last and last. We do crocheting together, so it was a lovely gesture.

love0c Wed 09-Apr-25 17:51:32

Rendella Beautiful! A present that has taken time to do/make, bought with thought is a true gift sent with love.

I was sent M&S roses growing in a wicker basket. They looked a bit sorry for themselves today so I have planted them in the garden just outside the back door where I can see them. They are bouncing back already with buds beginning to open. Seven miniature roses - just one still looking a bit fraught.

Grannern
Actually I think that’s rather rude

I had a bouquet of M&S White Roses with pink edges last Wednesday a week ago today and they are as fresh as when I received them. I keep them in a cool place overnight, but where it is very warm in them day time. They love it there. and I love them, so much pleasure from them and the thought from the friend who gave them to me.

4allweknow Wed 09-Apr-25 21:51:55

I told my family that they were not to send flowers for Mothers Day. The prices shoot up and quality is hit or miss. As they do not live near I know it is very tempting to send flowers but I did emphasis no, with a big NO and they complied. I am more than happy with a card or a phone call.

I get a lovely box of cheeses and crackers or a fruit basket from my loved ones in the post from either Neal's Yard or GoGo fruit always excellent.

My son bought me a wicker basket full of different flowers . They were reduced in price to virtually nothing . They're still alive now! X

Ziggy62 Thu 10-Apr-25 07:55:08

I've still got mother's day flowers my husband bought from florist in our village. They cost a bit more than Tesco, M&S etc but always last longer
