Such a disappointment

Had to sort through my two bouquets that I received for Mothers Day and throw half of them away. I do love fresh flowers but hate my sons wasting their money. I always tell them to try and get chrysanths or carnations that will last a while. All the roses I threw away were from M & S who I've had to complain to before. 😠

I sound ungrateful, but my late friend's husband who I keep in touch with, sends me a probably expensive bouquet containing flowers which hardly last (and in colours I dont particularly like) together with a lot (too much) of greenery. I would hate to upset him, as I know he gets a lot of pleasure from sending them, and say please don't send anymore. Difficult isnt it. So I am grateful for the thought, but not the actual flowers.
One friend sent me a bunch and did ask whst they were like. They were very poor and she was pleased I told her the truth so then she wouldnt use the same company again. She also sent fruit to another friend. I think MS and that was poor as well.

I was extremely lucky with the flowers I received for Mother's Day this year and am just going to start 'weeding' them out today. In one, the tulips came with bulbs attached - which I've never had before - along with a brown bag and instructions for drying them and when to plant them out. I shall follow that to the letter - wouldn't it be glorious if they bloomed again next Spring!

I sorted through my Mothering Sunday flowers just this weekend - sadly the tulips and roses had to be composted but the carnations and chrysanthemums are still going strong.

If I ever get carnations with a leafy side-shoot on the stems I pluck these off and let them root before potting on.......got to love a freeby!

Some flowers just don't last well once they’re cut, even from your own garden, and roses aren’t even in season perhaps suggest a potted plant, garden plant, chocolates or wine.
The best ones I’ve had this year were from Cornwall, locally grown.

I had some lovely double daffodils from DD that she said were from M&S. I took out the faded ones yesterday and will probably add the remaining ones to the compost today but they have been a delight for a week. I hate chrysanthemum and carnations that won’t die but don’t look fully alive 🫤

I have some of those carnations Litterpicker

I hate Chrysanthemums and carnations too. I would rather have flowers I love for a few days than the ones I don’t like but that go on forever.

My M&S roses will probably go tomorrow - I received them on the Saturday so a week and 3 days.

I think if roses have lasted a week they’ve done quite well.
You can prolong the life of cut flowers by changing the water and snipping a bit of the ends of the stems.
I make my own flower food - a dash of bleach, a dash of lemon juice and a teaspoon of sugar into the vase helps preserve them too.

I like it when I get Alstromeria-they last for ages.
This year I received tulips from Booths supermarket. To my surprise, they lasted for ages.

So do I, I have a carnation plant from a Mother’s Day bouquet that’s at least 8 years old and it’s given many offshoots.

These are the flowers my son sent me for Mother’s Day, still looking beautiful and smelling divine, even the roses. This is the second bouquet he has sent me from eflorist ( no I hadn’t heard of them before either) and each one has been a joy. When the flowers arrive they are mainly in bud and don’t look particularly special but they open out beautifully - and last for a good fortnight. I would heartily recommend.

My daughter always gives me Alstromeria (not an easy name to remember!)
They last for ages.

These are the flowers my son sent me via Teleflora. They came the day before Mother’s Day so that was 9 days ago and they are still giving me pleasure every time I look at them.

I had some M&S flowers through the post and they are still going strong. However, the bouquet from Waitrose was padded out with so much foliage and a good third of the flowers have gone into the brown recycling bin this morning.
I doubt they were cheap. I don't want to hurt their feelings but neither do I like the idea of their money being wasted. Next year I might mention a book token for a change.

Let’s celebrate being thought of so kindly

I've just finished making the lovely Lego flower bouquet I was given for Mothers Day. I love doing Lego with the GC, so it was such a great surprise to get a kit of my own!

Catterygirl Mon 07-Apr-25 23:10:01

I do appreciate being thought of so kindly but we are very close so will ask for a more long lasting orchid next time for half the price. Interflora sent a beautiful fresh bunch but they were dead in three days.

Many flowers you buy are imported from far away and have been stored and treated so that when you bring them out into a higher temperature they do not last long. Best buys are from locally grown cut flower businesses. We have several round here all owned by women. Their flowers have a much longer life span and are so beautiful. My tulips from one of the ladies have lasted really well. They sell them on our local market.

I love having flowers, but do prefer pot plants which will last months or years.

Roses never seem to last more than a few days, however expensive they are. Chrysanthemums seem to go on for ever.

Just before Christmas two friends bought me a very pretty basket of houseplants from M&S. One by one, over the course of a couple of weeks, all the plants died. I wonder if they keep their plants and flowers too cold.
