Charity shop joy!

We are between homes and living between our daughters and our holiday let.

We are in week 3 and the weather is better than anticipated so I have trawled the local charity shops here in Ripon and found some fabulous summer clothes as mine are all in store!

The best item being an M&S St Michael T Shirt from around 1990, the quality and cut is superb.

I’m sure if I put my mind to it I wouldn’t need to buy another item of new clothing again.

I do however love clothes and shopping so when life gets back to normal I’m sure I will be new clothes shopping again but it has been an eye opener!

I love trawling through charity shops. I picked up a lovely butter dish, a lovely crystal vase - not been so lucky with clothes….I’ll keep tying

When I think of MS clothes from the 80s and 90s I sent to charity because I was fed up with them I could cry. I am pretty well the same size and remember some lovely things. So well made with good linings and pockets. Quality materials.

Lucky finds Sago. Enjoy them.

Today, while on trip to the coast with our toddler granddaughter, I picked up a brand new pair of Paver's leather loafers for £5.
I was delighted!

Good find Marydoll I love charity shops, I bought 5 pieces of Yong Kim about ten years ago. I am still wearing them now. They were all black outfits, the dress was lovely £6. I saw it on line at a reduced price of of £89.
I also buy all my candles in charity shops.

I’m with CrazyH. I sometimes find ornaments but rarely clothes. Whenever I do buy charity shop clothes I can normally see why someone has given them away. As mentioned in another thread, charity shops are no longer cheap especially when it comes to tops which often don’t cost more brand new.

Years ago I often bought clothes from charity shops and got some very good bargains. Not so much since the onset of eBay I think. However, I have bought some lovely crystal vases over the years as I love my flowers. Some are really heavy so good quality.

I saw a beautiful pair of Gabor shoes in Morningside yesterday. Unfortunately they were too small!

I seldom find clothes in Charity shops but curtains, knitting wool, games and toys for the DGC and even a bookcase once.
Edinburgh Crystal had their factory in our town so crystal glasses often appear, likewise in Galasheils you often find tweed cloth and remnants from the now closed mills.

As I’m the head sorter/ chuckerouter/ decision maker you can imagine the temptation.
I couldn’t resist this today.

That is lovely Petra. The only thing I buy in charity shops is books and they have to be in excellent condition.
I picked up 3 this afternoon, one hardback and 2 paperbacks, all for the princely sum of £3.

I've got a couple of nice Seasalt tunics from our local Hospice shop, they have some good M & S stuff too. I bought a very nice Jaeger T Shirt there a couple of years ago and a Guess handbag which was a steal at £25.

Today I brought a Joules gilet, perfect condition, like new. Also a beautiful, Italian scarf, brand new. Total cost, £12.50.

Marydoll Thu 10-Apr-25 23:06:03

They both look lovely, Aldon. A bargain!

Marydoll Thu 10-Apr-25 23:18:42

My £5 shoes. As my friends and family would say, They are Marydoll shoes.🤣

I bought this huge bean bag from a charity shop a few months ago; it was in great condition and didn’t appear to have been used. My dog absolutely loves it. For a dog that usually wants to be snuggled up to you on the sofa she now often takes herself off to her beanie.

I think there's an art to charity shopping. I don't have it but I know several people who do.

They can spot things whereas I just see rows of garments in no order apart from size.

It only works if I narrow my search to say, a particular colour.
I'm better at buying fancy dress!

I am always on the hunt in my local charity shop.Today I found two almost new cashmere sweaters.

Grammaretto, my friend is exactly like that. She once spotted a new, black Hobbs coat in a charity shop, it is now my funeral coat.
I call her the Ebay Queen, she supplements her pension by re-selling her purchases on Ebay. She always amazes me how she finds profitable items in a load of junk.

However, I don't know if it sits well with me, when makes a good profit.

I read recently that many people sell their ‘good’ clothes on Vinted, then the remainder goes to charity.

Perhaps why there doesn’t seem the best bargains there now,

ronib Fri 11-Apr-25 07:35:43

Some affluent neighbourhoods have amazing bargains - it takes time and trouble to try and sell online so likely to donate to a charity shop.

Aldom Fri 11-Apr-25 07:41:46

I like your shoes*Marydol*. They would suit me too. grin

I bought these brand new Jacques Vert sling backs for £6 in our Cancer Research charity shop last spring and wore them to our 50th wedding anniversary party in September. 😊

I love a charity shop. We were in Filey recently and in the local hospice charity shop most if the clothes were £1. I got a Fatface jumper (to leave at our holiday lodge) also a book and a set of 12 musical CDs for the total sum of £4.50. Downside was DH can’t find the cd player he thought there was in our newly acquired car 😕

Another recent bargain in a local shop was a Joe Brown coat £10. I love it and fits me perfectly. I’ll put a picture on once I get up.
