Sometimes it’s the little things

I thought I had ruined a nearly new brushed cotton shirt when I ironed it (first time washed) without checking the sole plate of the iron. Black tarry marks across the corner and along the edge of the collar(ironed first)
I tried washing it again without success but this morning having hung it out overnight and while it was still damp I decided to attack the tarry residue with first of all my thumbnail, then a table knife, then (when it seemed to be working) with a potato peeler and finally a nutmeg grater. !!!
Good thing it’s sturdy material but it has worked. The shirt will be wearable and I have that feeling of achievement- job done!
As I said, sometimes it’s the little things.
Now for the coffee stain on the front of my cream (I know) jumper…….

😄well done you
As for stains, don’t get me started.Would love some white chinos but dare not!Even a white tee is a no no for me.

Bit like me the other week Maw I put a small wash load into our brand new machine. Luckily just a quick cycle as it was sounding ‘very clunky’ metal banging against the drum. Himself heard it and passed comment. I assumed it was zips on two articles. However when I opened the door and lifted out the laundry, there were my set of house keys sitting on the drum …. 😮
Note to self CHECK POCKETS next time!

I do DGS2’s (he’s nearly 4) laundry and I’ve now learned to check his pockets for stones, sea and snail shells and dinosaurs!

Success!!

Damp then rub gently with bar soap. Preferably white.

I always envy ladies who wear white, if only

Another “little thing”. Rosie’s frozen dog food was delivered this morning by hunky DPD courier Claudiu (Romanian? Albanian? Don’t know but always helpful and friendly)
“Good morning Maw! How are you? “as he hefts the 12 kg box into my kitchen and puts it on the table for me.
On leaving he wished me “Happy Easter!”

Small pleasures in life. Sweet.

Goodness Rosie, fancy being able to get the DPD driver to heave the box into your kitchen.

Do you have a special relationship? wink grin

Same here Oreo It seems I can rarely eat a meal without dropping something down my front. Soup and gravy are my bugbears

My DPD driver yesterday stopped me from bending down to lift the box of wine he was photographing on the doorstep. "You paid for a service, I'll put it into your hands" with a beaming smile. I bet if I'd asked he'd have carried it into the kitchen for me.

It's when OH finds the hoover or remembers how the washing machine works that does it for me. He doesn't need to buy me flowers, just the little jobs that need doing is enough to keep me happy ☺️

I'm impressed by you FGT : what a domestic goddess you are, washing your house keys !

A month ago I bought a beautiful pale blue jumper that has a death wish.

So far the record for wearing it without acquiring a stain is 20 minutes.

Tomato, wine, biro, oil, toothpaste to name just st a few🙄

Isn't she just!!

Just as well no car keys were attached as the battery would be wrecked.

On the subject of happy small things, DP went out to get a few essentials from the Co-op this morning and brought me back a lovely fresh apple Danish 😃 to have with morning coffee.
What a treat, mind you he also bought himself one.

Ah but the driver apparently had grown up in a society that respects its elders! Makes all the difference.

On the matter of stains - anything that can be washed that has become stained, put washing-up liquid on the stain, leave the garment, tablecloth etc. until the washing-up liquid is completely dry, then wash the article on the usual cycle and with the usual amount of laundry soap.

Oreo Thu 17-Apr-25 15:07:55

Thanks to posters who’ve left cleaning tips, I’ll try both the rubbing with a soap bar on a damp item and the washing up liquid one too.😃

Why is it as you get older, the location of your mouth becomes a mystery - or do forks get slippery as time marches on?

I used to have a hair colouring top and some waxing knickers. Now I've just got a baked bean/gravy/soup top.

Allira Fri 18-Apr-25 14:57:29

I've always been clumsy, not just as I'm older.

And salt will help get rid of bloodstains. Dampen the stain, sprinkle liberally with salt and leave for a while before washing.

My lovely Dsil popped in on his way home and fixed the very loud beeping sound in my kitchen. He's a star.
I am guilty of putting my car key through a wash. It still works but is a tad temperamental.

I had to visit town on business. We went into 2 different banks. The young ladies who dealt with us were very friendly, helpful and polite. On to get our car from the car park and the machines would not take any card payments to let us exit the car park. The lady answering the help button eventually managed to let us out by over riding the machines. Helpful and polite and no charge.
We went for lunch to a supermarket but I couldn't get the order machine to take my order or payment so I accosted a young lady assistant who made the machine work for me, Again polite friendly and helpful.
A lovely feeling at the end of the day. I was never made to feel stupid or patronised . A smile and a Please and Thank You always seems to work Thank you girls

White vinegar is a good stain remover. With regard to stains on white clothing or any other light colour I spot clean first with Oxy Gel stain remover, think Vanish at a fraction of the cost, then I put item in with normal wash in washing machine. I always add scoop of Oxy Gel to all my washing plus a scoop of soda crystals as it too helps with stains and softens the water for much less than Calgon!
