Regarding Donald Trump and the handshaking. He was probably not familiar with it or aware that it takes place. I was brought up as a Catholic but went my own way after I left home. It was many years before I went into a Catholic church again and this was something new to me and I felt quite uncomfortable.

We have done this in the Church of England too, although I must admit I was quite surprised when we moved and found that it was a custom at the new church we starting attending.

I was suprised that none of the ladies from the Catholic Royal Families were in white.

Since Vatican 2 there has been no obligation for women to cover their hair in a Catholic church, and as I have pointed out before, Zelinsky said at the start of the war that until it ended he would dress as his soliders do, so no tie.

I watched the funeral and thought it was a very moving occasion. I didn't notice the dress apart from Trump's. I think the POW and one other European Royal were in dark blue. This could be a security requirement to make them more easily identified if an attack had happened. Isn't that why the late Queen wore bight colours and elaborate hats for garden parties etc so security could see her easily? Rather sad we have to prepare for these matters.

There is no obligation to shake hands, in my church some people shake hands, some just say Peace be with you.
I don't shake hands because I am immunocompromised.
The shaking of the hands was stopped during the pandemic and it is only now that people have started doing it again.

Women cannot be ordained as Deacons either in the Catholic Church.

However, Deacons can be married. A deacon is the last stage before being ordained as a priest. If a deacon's wife predeceases them, he cannot remarry and must be celibate.

Woman do have many roles in the Catholic church: sacristans, Extra-ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Lectors, cantors and catechists, as well as entering the religious life as nuns.

I was in hospital in Birmingham recently, and one of the Catholic priests who visited me was married. It seems a number of married Anglican priests ‘jumped the fence’, and were ordained as Catholic priests! There is one with nine children.

I wouldn’t have a problem with married priests, and I think that the dwindling numbers mean many parishes have only one priest ( ours has gone from three priests when I was a child to one priest who has to serve two neighbouring parishes as well), so it makes for a very isolated existence fot a priest.

I wouldn't have a problem either with married priests, it would take some of the workload off them.
The doorbell and phone in our presbytery ring non-stop and the housekeeper only works a few hours a week, so the priest has to stop what he is doing to answer them, in case it is urgent.

However, I don't see how the stipend for a Roman Catholic priest can possibly support a wife and nine children!

I was chatting to our Deacon, who told me that Deacons in the Anglican Church are paid, Catholic deacons are not.

Actually there are married Catholic priests. If an Anglican priest is married and converts to Catholicism, they can remain both married and serving priests. They may not re-marry if their wife pre deceases them. We have two in our deanery.

To add to last post, the Anglican priests attended seminaries, trained & became ordained Catholic priests.

I couldn’t fault the funeral, if pope Francis was looking down he would be proud. Everything went off beautifully. The music was wonderful. Zelensky won’t wear a suit until his soldiers can, he looked respectful and the best moment for me was seeing him and Trump talking. 🤞🙏🏻

Yes Allsorts it did go well. Yes, Conclave is a work of fiction, but it does treat the subject respectfully, and gives insight in the soon to happen process.
Married priests. For anyone who knows the literature, one of the miracles of Jesus was the healing of Peter's mother in law, so he must have been married at some point.

The disciples were a bunch of fishermen, etc., so they would have been more likely to be married than not.

I liked the fact that the Pope had them put his own mitre in the coffin with him, instead of having a highly expensive new one specially made. Apart from the expense surely the one he'd been wearing would have more meaning for him?
