Joe Biden didn’t wear a black tie, but a blue one (Democrats?)
Trump wore a blue suit.
Zelenskyy wore no tie at all. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø
Melania Trump is 55y today.
I’ve bought the novel ā€˜Conclave’ on my Kindle.

NanKate Sat 26-Apr-25 15:58:41

Zelensky was applauded at the funeral, Trump wasn’t šŸ‘

The film Conclave was great and I am sure the book will be too.

It was lovely weather for the Pope’s funeral today
also appreciated by those doing the DofE.

Let me know how Conclave goes. I bought it for DH, but I haven’t read it yet.

I’m very shallow when it comes to what people wear.
Brazil’s President was wearing a checked tie.
I think Biden’s tie was actually grey, Trump’s tie was navy blue.
In fact anything seemed to go for ties, or no ties.
The Argentinian President won the ā€˜most unlikely hairstyle’ competition (see Sky News).
The Prince of Wakes looked very good, and Macron looked immaculate, I think the majority would benefit from asking who makes his suits, and using his tailor.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 26-Apr-25 16:21:34

Yes, Macron looked extremely smart.

The European royals are masters when it comes to dressing for formal ceremonies. But Melania Trump proved she could hold her own amongst them at the funeral of Pope Francis in the Vatican City’s St Peter’s Square on Saturday.

The US first lady wore a black double-breasted coat-dress, lace gloves and a black lace mantilla-style veil over her hair. Her predecessor, Dr Jill Biden, also adhered to the dress code flawlessly, donning a veil and sheer black tights.

The best bit was people clapping President Zelensky as Kate said. And, he never normally wears a tie.

NanKate Sat 26-Apr-25 16:52:49

Absolutely Kitty.

I too am ā€œshallowā€ and judgemental about appearances .smile
Blue suit and blue tie - no.
Black or charcoal grey suit and black tie - even our POW who normally never puts a foot wrong lost a brownie point from me.
Lovely sunny day and being early in the day , hopefully not too hot to stand outside, so visually a very memorable occasion.
Watching ā€œThe Two Popesā€ (BBC iPlayer) afterwards gave a very touching and affectionate picture of Pope Francis. I am completing my day of Vatican total immersion by watching ā€œConclave ā€œ with a cuppa and a Welsh cake now.

I think I can help them there. It's Jonas & Cie in Paris, just up from the Louvre. They're a French family business, but the shirts come mainly from Milan.

Maremia Sat 26-Apr-25 17:16:09

And then there was a lovely tour round the streets of Rome.
It's weird to be reading Conclave just now, but in an enjoyable way. Still to see the film.
Hope those Cardinals make a good choice.
And foolish fingers crossed for that impromptu meeting between Zelensky and Trump.

lixy Sat 26-Apr-25 17:28:38

Me too Maremia. I was thinking how pleased Pope Francis would be to see them sitting and chatting.

It was good to see that everyone had dressed respectfully.

I am not interested in what mourners wore, I am not interested in the Catholic Church... but it went well. Trump will make media time out of this with Zelensky.... but do nothing practical. I have lived long enough to recognise hypocrisy ....

My observations are that the weather was lovely, the singing was beautiful and the simple wooden coffin said so much about the man Pope Francis was.

Parsley3 Sat 26-Apr-25 18:08:06

My focus was on the simple coffin and the lovely eulogy. I do hope that the next pope will also be a person of humility.

TerriBull Sat 26-Apr-25 18:26:50

I do recommend "Conclave" the book, I still want to see the film.

Norah Sat 26-Apr-25 18:39:54

Weather was beautiful.
Eulogy was lovely, fitting.
Most people were respectful in appropriate black clothing.
Zelensky was applauded.
Wooden coffin and Basillica were wonderful choices.

winterwhite Sat 26-Apr-25 18:48:25

Eulogy was excellent.

Disrespectful of Trump - who criticises it in others - not to observe what looked like a strict dress code re wearing black.

Decision of Pope Francis to be buried in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore has not been explained - or I have missed it.
A pity I thought as the break at the end of the funeral service seemed a bit casual.

Pope Francis favourite Church.

I’ve only seen photos. Anyone else fretting about whether all those bald heads had had sunscreen applied to them?

and Macron looked immaculate

But he always does. He's what used to be called dapper and other men could go to the same tailor and still not look as good.

I think dark suits are fine. Melania was dressed very appropriately for the occasion, she is a Catholic of course.

I've been to (too) many funerals lately and some requests have to wear something red or at least bright.
Of course, there was a sea of red at the Pope's funeral.

Allira Sat 26-Apr-25 19:40:41

We could only watch half of the funeral because we had to go out but have recorded it.

The Princess of Wales Kate, Melania Trump and Jill Biden are all very elegant women.

Deedaa Sat 26-Apr-25 19:47:58

I liked the fact that the Pope had them put his own mitre in the coffin with him, instead of having a highly expensive new one specially made. Apart from the expense surely the one he'd been wearing would have more meaning for him?

DD and I already had tickets booked to see Conclave tomorrow. I loved the book, but it's taken a lot of will power not to tell her the twist!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 26-Apr-25 20:14:57

The coffin was lined with zinc. So heavy! That’s why there were so many pallbearers.
