Who will he be?

He looks very kind, gentle and genuinely moved by it all. And has a lovely smile.

I agree

He looks kindly, if it's possible to tell that from the TV.

I'm not a Catholic, but I hope those who are are happy with the appointment. Is it appropriate to send congratulations on having a new pontiff? If so, please accept mine, and apologies if that is a silly thing to say.

From what I've heard he is in the tradition of the previous Pope, who was, I believe, fairly progressive. I hope he can rein in DT a bit.

I Hope not.
An antidote to DT.

karmalady Thu 08-May-25 18:32:56

a peacemaker, welcoming everyone

I remember being amongst crowds like that in St Peter's Square, for the canonisations of Popes John PaulII and John XXIII, in April 2014.

It was absolutely incredible to see the two popes, Benedict and Francis, together for the special occasion. Francis welcomed Benedict with a great big hug. I hope I never forget it.

God bless and protect Pope Leo XIV.

Is it disrespectful to say I kept thinking of Paddington when he mentioned Peru?

^He will be in the Room of Tears now. Emotional. Praying^.
Trying on one set (out of three set aside) of papal robes and selecting one box containing new shoes out of the half dozen sizes awaiting the wearer

With all respect- how do you know?

. We’ve many of us seen The Two Popes, and I think he is more likely to be having a nice cup of tea and a hobnob- maybe even a chocolate one. .

She has read the book!

Hoping on both counts, I expect more information will come along.

Wyllow3 Thu 08-May-25 18:51:50

brief info

"Overall, he's considered a centrist, but on many social issues he's seen as progressive, embracing marginalized groups like Francis, who championed migrants and the poor. But Prevost opposes ordaining women as deacons, for instance, so he's seen as conservative on church doctrine"

Hmmpf.

RosieandherMaw Thu 08-May-25 18:55:43

As you were -
More likely a Garibaldi as they're in Rome.

I am not a Catholic.
I liked the two birds on the roof by the smoke. And a baby one.
Hopefully a good sign.

MayBee70 Thu 08-May-25 19:02:11

Although not religious I love churches and the pomp and ceremony of the high church. Can’t have too much incense or too many candles for me.

Robert Prevost!

First ever from America

BORN in Chicago to a French father and Italian mother - DT would probably have sent them.bavk.
Also naturalised citizen of Peru where he has apparently spent much of his life.
Trust he can put DT and Vance in their place.

ferry23 Thu 08-May-25 19:11:51

I hope this is a good choice for our GN Catholics. It seems he is in the mould of his predecessor although perhaps a little more conservative in some ways.

I enjoyed watching the pomp and ceremony and the joyful atmosphere. I must say though, the Swiss Guard could learn a thing or two from our military.

I too have read Robert Harris's book (years before it became a film) and seen the play The Pope which the Two Popes film is based on.

Apparently he criticised JD Vance a couple of weeks ago so he should be interesting to watch.

Doodledog Thu 08-May-25 19:23:36

On the offchance that anyone doesn't already know - Conclave is now free to view for subscribers on Prime. I plan to watch it this evening.

MayBee70 Thu 08-May-25 19:26:38

Amazon have really struck lucky timewise with that one!

I was getting confused - thinking "But no American was standing for that afaik". That explains it - he's a half French/half Italian pope.

Apparently also on Trump and MAGA out in the press - waiting for verification.

Wyllow3 Thu 08-May-25 19:34:25

Confirmed in Irish Press article -

"Is your conscience not disturbed? How can you stay quiet?'" a post the new pope retweeted reads.

It calls out the Trump administration's mass deportation effort, which has sent hundreds of migrants to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador rife with human rights abuses

CariadAgain Thu 08-May-25 19:36:29

Just had a quick check - and lots of Mumsnetters are very confused - and calling him American (presumably on the grounds he was born in America). Come in Joanna Lumley - apparently you must be Indian, rather than English, because you were born in India..........
