We have a pope

It’s disconcerting that he has called himself after my grandson.

As a Catholic keenly watching the proceedings my first reaction was, 'Oh no- he's American...' closely followed by 'Oh yes, he's Pope Leo!'

Then I do a quick Wikipedia (how fast were they working??) to find out he lived in Peru most of his life and loves Marmalade sandwiches (joke there!). His father was French, his mother Italian so he speaks lots of languages and was born in Chicago.

He has rebuked JD Vance ( heaven really must help him with Trump!) and so his reference to social justice (the last Pope Leo supported the working man and unions as opposed to the bosses) and also to synodality (not popular with conservative Catholics) puts him firmly in my approval ratings.

I love that the media got it wrong and many Americans won't even know who he is, but I suspect he was a real front runner all along because he was chosen so quickly.

I hope he will be a true internationalist, a builder of bridges as he says but I am waiting for the first fall out to do with his being a moderate, so will please no one who likes to judge people by these criteria.

I liked that he seemed quite nervous but has a kind face and is a succeeder to Francis and Saint Peter.

Looking quickly at his CV he seems like an extremely able man and a smart political operator.
Lets hope so.

You will get used to it. Pope Francis called himself after my GS.

I'm delighted about the promise of this new Pope! I'm hoping he will be the voice of reason, the voice for everyman in a world of increasing extremes.

The MAGA lot seem to be calling him another ‘Marxist puppet pope’ so imo that can only be a good thing…

He has disagreed with Trump's policies and especially with Vance.

Possibly because Justine Welby is still living in Lambeth Palace, with seemingly no intention of moving out until he has to - July maybe.

Just had a quick check - and lots of Mumsnetters are very confused - and calling him American (presumably on the grounds he was born in America). Come in Joanna Lumley - apparently you must be Indian, rather than English, because you were born in India..........

One of my friends was born in America of Italian parents. She is American not Italian. The Pope is also American.
