Things just seem to have disappeared…

Sadly, over the years and not discounting house moves, precious things just seem to have evaporated into thin air. They are things that held meaning for me, so I would never knowingly have disposed of them. A book my daughter searched for years to find for me for instance, exam certificates, my dolls house, some bellows (of all things) all just gone! Too many things to mention, really. It both saddens and mystifies me. I’m guessing this happens to other Grans, too?

Is someone ‘decluttering’ behind your back?

Esmay Sat 31-May-25 11:01:22

Yesterday sorting through some boxes - I found some things, which I'd bought three years ago .
I used to be so organised , houseproud and tidy .
I can use them fortunately .

Homestead62 Sat 31-May-25 11:01:50

Over the years have lost things in house moves. No idea where they went.

Secondwind Sat 31-May-25 11:03:06

Highly unlikely. There’s only been me for a long time now, which makes it all the more puzzling.

Witzend Sat 31-May-25 11:04:48

Witzend

Is someone ‘decluttering’ behind your back?

PS, I still remember a MN poster being infuriated that her MiL (supposedly just coming in to feed the cats while she was away) had taken it upon herself to throw out a lot of precious things, including much loved childhood books, photos, letters, etc. From the MNer’s bedroom, too! And the bin men had already been.

Not to mention getting all tearful when told that it just wasn’t on! ‘I was only trying to help, doing a bit of de-cluttering for you…’

Not sure I’d ever have spoken to the interfering old bag ever again!

Trying to imagine how one would 'lose' a dolls' house or bellows.

Failing.

Where on earth did you keep them that you didn't notice pretty immediately that they were gone?

Magenta8 Sat 31-May-25 11:07:27

I believe that "Borrowers" really exist. They are not just a children's fiction written by Mary Norton. There can be no other explanation for the number things that have simply disappeared from my house over the years. Whoever they are they seem very partial to single earrings, scissors and pens.

Grammaretto Sat 31-May-25 11:10:53

I have lost things and blame the borrowers but I had never suspected people coming into the house and helping themselves....hmm.

Tradesmen have taken my extension leads I'm pretty certain as I used to have several and can't find any.
Sometimes I lend books only to find they've gone forever.
I even confronted someone and asked if he still had a favourite of mine. He denied all knowledge!!

crazyH Sat 31-May-25 11:11:08

If it anyone decluttering in my house , it will be me. I’ve started on the thousands of photos etc. I am making memory boxes for each of them. The rest will be destroyed - my exhusband had the habit of photographing everything that moved or did not move. Some are just scenic places of holidays - just scenery and I can’t even remember where - so, out they. That reminds me, must get back to my junk room 😂

Secondwind Sat 31-May-25 11:36:45

witzend What a cheek! I remember my late MIL babysitting once and tidying some clothes drawer. Embarrassed and furious in equal measure!
Baggs The bellows were beside the fire in my last home and the dolls house was in the spare bedroom in the home before that, I had things in storage for a while prior to my last move, but everything was sealed, labelled and counted. It was only the other day when I was hoovering around the fire that I remembered the bellows! I can’t remember the last time I saw the dolls house and can’t imagine where they’ve gone either. So frustrating.
I share your bewilderment Homestead62!

BlueBelle Sat 31-May-25 11:53:22

Secondwind I bet you ve tidied them someplace I do it all the time …find a better place to keep something and never see it for years, believe I must have lost it, then find it in some obscure place that I tidied it to
Try not to think about it and you ll find them if you live alone it’s highly unlikely they ve gone anywhere.

Shelflife Sat 31-May-25 13:10:22

Ask St Anthony to help you locate them , I am not religious but do ask him to help , he nearly always does!!?
If he helps don't forget to thank him !

I took my wedding and engagement rings off when some medicine made my fingers swell.
Both have been missing for 3 years now.

And when I packed up mum's house after my parents died I packed up her wedding dress and dad's tail suit and top hat. I packed them last of all ... neither were ever seen again.

loopyloo Sat 31-May-25 13:31:08

At our 50 th wedding anniversary couldn't find our photos at all.
2 months later I unearthed a box at the back of our shed. Rather damp but there they were.
And didn't we look young!!

Devorgilla Sat 31-May-25 14:52:25

We've lost stuff when we moved. A box of books went missing, never to be seen again. During our latest move, 12 years ago, I am convinced we lost a large plastic box of paperwork and photos. However, I am in decluttering mood at the moment so the box may turn up yet. Alas, the books won't. Just hope they found a good home.

Allira Sat 31-May-25 15:04:27

You could try St Anthony, sometimes he helps if at all possible.

Dear St Anthony, full of grace
Lead me to its hiding place.

It often works although we never found a lost key and had to have a lock replaced.

AuntieE Sat 31-May-25 15:40:41

No, this does not happen to me.

Last time we moved, we did lose a whole box of stuff, but that was the removers' fault.

We disposed of a lot of things before our last move, and I do sometimes wonder what happened to small, unimportant things.

Nothing precious to me has ever disappeared in the way you describe.

If you are sure you have not just misplaced these things, I think you should change the locks on your outer doors at once.

Reading your post, it seemed to me that someone is nicking your stuff.

I mean you cannot have mislaid a dolls' house, and if it meant so much to you that you have kept it after you grew up, then you would certainly remember giving it away, if you had done so.

I have dolls from my childhood. If one of them disappears, I would be upset and know for a certaintity that someone had stolen the doll in question.

When did things start disappearing?

TwiceAsNice Sat 31-May-25 16:03:12

We have been renovating parts of our house and we packed up all the China whilst the kitchen was being replaced. Since it’s all been functional again I can’t find a set of nibbles bowls or 4 small blue plates given to me by a friend and sentimental value. Since we unpacked everything I can’t find either and am quite sad. I fear they have been thrown away with the wrapping paper but EIGHT items?!

Secondwind Sat 31-May-25 16:27:02

Thank you for your responses, Grans.
I moved out of the dolls house home on 2004, so that must have been the last time I saw that.
I’ve genuinely no idea where they’ve gone either things have gone. Maybe some have been taken, though I struggle to think what on earth anyone would want with some of it! None of it is of any monetary value.
My home is small and there’s nowhere I haven’t looked.
I’m sorry that some of you have lost precious things, too.
I’ll give St Anthony a try. It’s my certificates and the book from my daughter that grieve me the most.

Skydancer Sat 31-May-25 16:56:45

In our house it’s my husband’s socks. He can never find a matching pair and keeps buying new ones.

Grammaretto Sat 31-May-25 17:00:57

Years ago, when life was very busy, I got into a bad habit of putting papers into cardboard cartons roughly corresponding to that year, intending to sort them some day in the future.

At last I am now going through these boxes as I declutter the house.

The cat, who died about 10 years ago did us an unexpected favour by using one of these boxes as a litter tray long ago so everything had to go with no further glance.
I am reminded of the cat when I tackle the remaining boxes. I honestly haven't missed anything.
Although ofcourse I come across letters, photos and postcards which make me nostalgic.

eazybee Sat 31-May-25 17:24:59

Well, I would be grateful if someone could tell me where i have put two tubs of Swarfega and a packet of drain cleaners.

creakingandchronic Sat 31-May-25 17:32:02

So many things seem to go missing my OH reckons we have a Bermuda Triangle in our house!

Macadia Sat 31-May-25 17:46:52

Everything near and dear to me has been stolen. Its sad but now I have learned to just be grateful for nonmaterial things because my life is too short to worry about "things".
