I think you will find that most restaurants buy in and reheat these days; it is more economic.
The idea that pubs have chefs sweating (and swearing) from scratch is drawn from nostalgia or "Bear".
My one experience of "Spoons" was good. A friend, who works on a tight budget took me for lunch. I was a bit off-put by the cheapness but had a lovely meal of boiled ham, chips and salad; well cooked and fresh. Absolutely no complaints and I am a very fussy eater.

But it is not 'snobby' to choose pubs and restaurants that cook from scratch on site.

Yes no music, no dogs, no children after 9pm. Never many children in them anyway.

Good for a cheap drink, or coffee. Food isnt brilliant though. I use to meet my friends at our local WSpoons, I would say, “meet you in the airport lounge” as that’s what is reminded me of 😂 what I liked was we could have a conversation, without the the ‘car alarm’ music in the background.

All the food is bought in and reheated in bags in hot water tanks. Carvery probably your best bet.

Well I don't know what happens in the kitchen but in our local one the staff never stop. If there is no one to serve, they are mopping, cleaning, polishing. We can see the kitchen from the lounge. It looks immaculate.

Nothing to do with snobbery- but the owner! And as two of my children and two of my students worked there- they told me what happens in the kitchen!

Buildings are indeed often lovely, like the one next to where we used to live- but ...

Our local Spoons only has one TV and they never have the sound on. Easy to avoid.

Well, we miss our Wetherspoons. Ancient Greek meeting used to meet there. Was a great informal community resource.
