I have been given a whole pile of veg - I live alone so can't eat it up very fast and tend to cook the same things over and over again.

Amongst this treasure trove is a turnip. What would you do with it?!

Grate and use as a salad vegetable or grate and use in a cake.

Luckygirl3 Sun 22-Jun-25 13:08:31

What does it taste like? - bland like swede or spicy/peppery?

Boil, mash with a little butter, pepper and salt. If you're into making Cornish pasties, chopped up with meat, potatoes, onion and skirt beef!

Chutney?

I like the sound of Cornish pasties

Aldom Sun 22-Jun-25 13:14:00

Perfect for Cornish Pasties. They're easy to make and you could freeze several.

Wash it and dry carefully, then chuck it in the bin.๐Ÿ˜

No, that's a swede!
A swede is orange, a turnip is white with a pink blush.
Swede goes in pasties.

Any sheep in the field behind you, Luckygirl? They might like it. ๐Ÿ˜

That's what I would have done with the beetroot that was being discussed last week

I hope your turnip is a swede. A swede calls for haggis and mashed potatoes and gravy.

Georgesgran Sun 22-Jun-25 13:52:37

Root vegetable mash? Just put potatoes, carrots and turnip in the same pan. Boil in salted water, drain and mash as usual.
You could use it to top a cottage/shepherds/fish pie or just serve as mash - part of your 5 a day.

I was going to say haggis, neeps and tatties until it occurred to me that the OP might have meant the white/purple type of turnip rather than a neep (or swede, if you prefer).

You can use it in Cullen Skink instead of potato.

If it is of the parsnip variety I would put it in the compost bin.

Nice one Oreo grin.

Sorry Luckygirl don't have any suggestions even impolite ones.

A parsnip is totally different from a turnip!

It is round and white with pink blush... definitely a turnip.
Do cattle eat them? There is a field of them behind my house!
I will probably boil it up and see what happens!

Norah Sun 22-Jun-25 14:14:31

Scrub, chop, roast with other chopped vegetables. Carrots, potatoes, swedes, garlics, onions, rosemary, salt pepper, olive oil.

Luckygirl3 Sun 22-Jun-25 14:22:56

I know it's a turnip ... I saw one in Mr McGregors garden smile

Marg75 Sun 22-Jun-25 14:35:39

Allira Here in Cornwall there is an ongoing debate on the difference between turnip and swede. Believe you me, the women in my family going back very many years put turnip in pasties! Anyone want a real recipe I can give it to you, complete with how to crimp!

Haven't the faintest idea - on the few occasions I've come across one peeling the damn thing has been like trying to break rocks. Cut your losses and toss it in the compost bin.

Shalgam Gosht is a delicious lamb and turnip curry . There are many recipes for it on the Web.
My original recipe was a Madhur Jaffrey one

Chop, throw in a couple of carrots and a handful of red lentils, boil and blitz into soup. Freeze for when the weather turns cooler.
