Anyone else 'let themselves go'?

I had a thought this morning as I got into my unironed trousers and top and shook my hair: I've let myself go. I gave up on make up, won't wear uncomfortable clothes and definitely no uncomfortable shoes no matter what they look like.
I'm quite happy. I don't care about 'being judged'. Maybe it's the confidence of older age or maybe I'm just a slob. Is it just me?

It’s being happy in your own skin that’s important.

If you are content and not concerned, don’t worry.

I have "let myself go days" too. But I have to say that I feel better on days when I make a bit of an effort - I don't get such a nasty shock when I see myself in the mirror!!

Me too, Taichinan. I feel much better if I slap on a bit of make up, and earrings etc. It's worth the effort to me and cheers me up, just a bit.
But each to his own, we are all different.

I’ve been gone a long time!

I think it depends on your personal interpretation of "let yourself go". My mother would think I have, because I no longer wear fitted, uncomfortable clothes, heels, smart suits and the like. I would say I had let myself go if I didn't look after my body, skin, cleanliness and lifestyle. I enjoy wearing shorts, jeans and tees, barefoot shoes and sandals, leggings and the like and can throw the odd comfortable dress in when required. I'm always clean and my hair is styled. Minimal makeup finishes off my (slightly bohemian) look. Mother would say I was scruffy though, but who cares!

I am having a long lie in bed this morning so I must certainly be on the slippery slope to slobsville.

I love the fashion for trainers so I can wear comfy footwear without appearing to have let myself go - at least footwear wise.

I'm always clean and take care of my teeth but that's about it.

Kate1949 Sun 29-Jun-25 10:39:48

I do try but when you've lost all your teeth (aged 11) and now all your hair through alopecia, like me, what's the point?

Ziggy62 Sun 29-Jun-25 10:40:49

We were out last night at a very nice retirement party at a lovely hotel, so I got dressed up, hair cut and coloured on Friday, make up on, jewellery on.
BUT today I'll just brush my hair, wear moisturiser, leggings and t shirt. Have never wore make up daily, prefer jeans to dresses. Although I like to look tidy, some days I go out and wonder if people look in the mirror before they leave the house lol

I know my mother and grandmother would say I've let myself go but I'm always clean as are my clothes. Beyond that, I don't care. I wear what's comfortable; I won't go to "dressed up" events. My midriff bulge is a bit too bulgy - but I'm happy in my skin.

MissRedd Sun 29-Jun-25 10:52:09

I have had more days of putting on my "round the house" clothes. But, I do work quite a lot from home. I have most certainly been using less make-up.

I do remember a time I would not leave the house without my make-up on. It was somehow a very big deal and was a no-no, taught by my mum.

Nowadays, I will put a little lip gloss and some moisturiser on my face and run to the Co-Op, and not be bothered a bit.

I find that freeing, really.

I think if someone really feels they are letting themselves "go", in the line of not caring and feeling depressed, then that is worth a thought or two.

I think they could be two very different things. I have had times in my life where I felt very anxious and depressed, especially after losing my dad just after Christmas.

There were days were I didn't even brush my hair. I just was a mess and I couldn't be bothered whatsoever.

I’ve never been one for make up apart from in my teens, so no change there. In the corporate world I was suited, heeled and coordinated, my second career allowed more flexibility
Since early retirement I’m now now in jeans, shorts and the odd floaty frock if it’s boiling hot, ‘smart’ means linen trousers, my footwear is trainers, flip flops or bare feet.
I’m clean, hair trimmed when my fringe gets too long, comfortable and happy.
So not ‘let go’ Aveline rather let free.

You and me both!

Georgesgran Sun 29-Jun-25 11:02:48

I don’t think ‘let myself go’ rather just relaxed with age,
Full make up every day - takes 5 minutes. The rest is clean and presentable, but I’m no longer concerned about what I wear or others opinion of it!

nanna8 Sun 29-Jun-25 11:08:26

I always wear tinted makeup every day because it protects from the sun here but also because I am quite pale naturally and scare myself if I look in the mirror with no makeup on. Looks like a ghost 👻

Hi Kate,

I hope you don't mind me sending this little note. I noticed you said this in a thread I had put up earlier.

It sounds like this must be very difficult for you and I would very much struggle with this myself. Is it any wonder?

It is very traumatic to lose your hair and your teeth. It seems so unfair and must have been difficult in your younger years regarding your teeth, as children can be so cruel.

May I ask if you have Alopecia Areata or Totalis?

I follow quite a few people on YouTube, where I have learnt some very interesting things and ways they deal with this.

When I was just starting out as a young mum, I was a hairdresser. Even when I changed my career, I kept my license.

What I really want to say is that there is a point, Kate. You are worthy of feeling lovely and good about yourself.

I can understand you may have not gotten much support, as I feel it can be lacking in these areas. It's as if the experts don't even realise how very damaging to someone's sense of self this can be.

Anyway, you certainly don't need to answer unless you feel you'd like to. Or you could send me an inbox, if you'd like.

I just wanted to send a hug and a word to say that I have seen you around and have thought of you and how difficult your situation must be.

Miss Redd

Must admit I’m an ironer, I’d love not to be as I hate ironing, but I can’t start the day crumpled even if I’m wearing jeans and a T-shirt, which is my standard at home outfit. I put tinted moisturiser on, perfume, and mascara after my shower, and that’s it. Actually, there is one other thing when I think about it - I have to wear nail varnish on my toes in the summer, I hate the sight of them in sandals otherwise.

Kate1949 Sun 29-Jun-25 11:12:55

Thanks for the hugs. Miss Redd. Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

Grandma70s Sun 29-Jun-25 11:13:44

I’m at home by myself most of the time, so I’m not very bothered about looking smart. I make some effort when I have visitors or go out - lipstick, nice clothes and so on.

I’ll consider I’ve let myself go if I stop washing my hair regularly every couple of days. I do this whether I’m going to be seen or not.

I have nail varnish on my fingers and toes all year round.

I iron everything apart from underwear and tea towels.

Always wear moisturiser (tinted in the winter) perfume, earrings and a watch.

Today as it’s warm, I have a bikini on under a long linen dress, ready for some relaxing outside when the GS goes home at lunchtime.
